13683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Thanksgiving Holiday Gaming Recap! on: November 27, 2006, 01:22:39 PM
Well, my guests ended up leaving a day earlier than expected, that leant itself to a robust day or so of gaming.

Behold:

Gears of War: I'm to Act II and so far this game is riveting. I've got the controls down now and the gameplay is outstanding. I can definitely see myself playing through multiple times.  There are some VERY intense moments, I must say.  The addition of John "Bender" Dimaggio as the main voice guy makes this even better. There is one part though where a transmission comes into Fenix and it sounds like Bender is under fire from the Locust.  Rather surreal.  icon_biggrin

Battles of Prince of Persia: I finished 2.5 missions.  Only 2 more missions to go and I'm done with this unheralded gem.  Fabulous.

Guitar Hero: My 15 year old niece is officially the Eric Claptonesqe guitar god of the ATB extended family. I took her on some songs, but she pwns me.

Oh and I took today off too...so I should be able to do some more!

Heh.  It must be painful for some at OO to see that OO-Banned folk seem to do well here, even thrive.  That alone says quite a lot about GT and the community.   thumbsup
I am not sure that you "thrive" here yet..lets not go crazy.

I can't wait to see the November NPD on the hardware. I will be very interested in seeing how well the big N did with this launch.

Ditto. Can't wait to see how well they're selling.

FWIW, I on a whim went to my BB at about 15 mins to open and it seems that they handed out the vouchers around 7:00...people had been on line since about 5 AM.  My BB got 51...

Oh well. I was just gonna sell it anyway...
13688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Could I start the MGS series with #3? on: November 26, 2006, 07:01:15 PM
DO NOT!

As a gamer who missed the boat on the PSX and only recently (03/06) arrived in Playstation Twoosville, hunt for MGS and MGS2 and play them.  MGS holds up remarkably well- though you'll note the primitive control limitations- and MGS2 is a masterpiece of a game.  A MASTERPIECE.

3 is a gigantic departure from the first 2 (and I've still not worked through it due to other game priorities).

YOU MUST play MGS and MGS2.  Please, for the sake of Snake...

Well, Arkon, after nearly a month of relaxing and travel and eating and eating and eating oh  and Thanksgiving, I'm starting again today with the goal of a half marathon in March.  Today is food 'detox' day as I plan to eat reasonably in preparation for the week ahead.

I'll check my weight tomorrow, and if I haven't gained five lbs, I'll be joyous.

Any updates from anyone else?

13694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 N00b Questions on: November 26, 2006, 05:27:14 AM
1. I tried to DL some demos tonight but each one stopped and said 'cannot dl xxxx. Not connected.'  Now obviously I was connected as I could see the demos and my friends online. Is this a glitch with Live or is my machine hosed?

2. What's it mean when the 4 lights on the controller blink intermittenly periodically? All lights are green. Does this mean the batteries are about to die?

3. I unplugged the 360 for most of the 3 weeks I was on travel. Since I've been back, I have to select my profile every time I log in even though I have auto sign in turned on. Is this a glitch with the latest Live update or something more troubling?

Thanks.

Yeah. So stupid you had "FIVE PEOPLE" trying to get you a 360 on the cheap.  Roll Eyes

If you'd got one you'd be singing Amazon's praises right now, telling us all how impressive you are that if we'd all just planned properly we could've had one too. But, instead, you missed out on amazing deal and now your penny-pinching self must decry it as ill-advised from the get go. Save it for people who don't know your M.O.

Hmmm.  You've actually summed up the situation spot on.  Now, if you could do the reverse and praise me (who failed to get one but responded with a calm and level-headed No go for this schmoe.) with the same acumen, you could strike an awesome balance.

What does this mean?  Hasn't the 360 been hacked?  If not is that because the 360 is super locked down software wise?

This just cemented Sony being #1 this generation.

What kills me is that unlike a brick and mortar store where a deal like this will draw in the crowds who will likely buy other stuff even if this was sold out, they basically just jacked up their traffic to sell these at a huge loss with very little added purchases by customers.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too.

You have to think of Gears of War as a FPS with the camera moved back a little bit, not so much a third person action game.  Dead Rising's system was made for a third person melee/action game and worked incredibly poor for quickly shooting things, which is all you do in Gears.

This advice, also given by Purge, has helped me tremendously.  I still have to say outloud the way I want to go on occasion, but the difficulty is fading.
