Minor IP spoiler:

I was enjoying that game until I got to the bookstore.  I'm a cop, see, and I'm asking the bookstore owner about a murder investigation. He tells me "I'll answer your questions but first you have to do x, y, and z."  In real life the response would be: "How about this: You answer my questions or you spend the night in jail for obstruction?"  But no. I'm sent to find some books.  I said, "Hup. All done with this one."

I never turned it back on again as the seemed to be a hugely poor design decision with extending the game as the sole point.

Yeah, college payments are going to break my back some day.

We're planning to set the hopes of our kids by telling them that they must achieve as best as they can to get assistance/scholarships because chances are we won't be able to pay a full ride for them. In fact, I can't conceive any possibility that we can.

However, I don't know that a full ride is necessarily something parents 'owe' to their children.  I think they should help as much as possible, but it shouldn't be an expectation on the part of the kids.

This is contrary to my own upbringing as my parents paid my full way (and truthfully I cannot express how grateful I am that they did), but again I don't think it should be an entitlement.

On the flipside though, if my kids somehow get into Brown or Dartmouth...I'll do everything I can to help them...but a full ride will definitely be out of the question.

Anyone have a 529 plan?

13508  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: One Game At a Time: My Xbox 360 Purchasing Rule on: December 18, 2006, 05:18:25 PM
An exciting update:

Upon further consideration, my backlog was much worse than originally reported as I did not include games that I was actively working on.  True counts including backlog and those in active rotation are significantly bigger.

However, I've decided to condense the nonsense.  My XB1 has been listed on Ebay and will close today.  As a result, I'm booting almost all of my XB1 backlog (despite BC options).

There are games on the PS2 that did not grab me like I hoped: Looking at you Okami and you Bully.  Those plus 3 others are listed.

DS: Finished a game and am selling a couple I'm working on that I don't care to finish.

So as of this writing, my true backlog = 8 Games
Add to that list the games I am actively playing across all platforms = 9

My total backlog/Active Game list is 17 games.  Not too shabby.

Of those 17, there are 3 that I don't know if I'll go back to/finish: DQ8 (70 more hrs to go!?), Shadow Hearts Covenant (not grabbing me like the first one) and Guitar Hero II (I dunno what it is, but it's not nearly as charming as GH1).

My active list consists of the following:

Dead Rising (beaten, replaying)
Gears of War (beaten, replaying)
Elite Beat Agents (almost done)
New Super Mario Bros (bogged down somewhere)
Advanced Wars Dual Strike (3 or so more missions left)
Killer 7 (3 or so more missions)
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow (1/3 through the game)

The additional good news is that there's nothing out there now that I HAVE to have...so I'm in really good shape and the contest for all intents and purposes is over.

I have pared my BL down enough to create enough 30 dollar credits to afford me any 360 game...However, I'm not breaking my one game at a time rule as it has really afforded me the ability to sink my teeth into both DR and GoW.

It has been nice playing and it's good to almost have the monkey off my back.

He's up to 391 and I'm currently reading at 364 (I let myself stop checking it for a while so that I could savor a few strips here and a few strips there.

While some of the story arc got a bit slow and long in the tooth, the last 20 or so strips have really been top notch with great writing, clever dialogue and even a few unexpected plot twists..

If you checked out of following the strip...now's a great time to get back in.

C&C was a hallmark in gaming for me.  I actually kept my then GF (now wife) waiting for me while I played it one night when we were supposed to go on a date.  We still talk about it.  icon_lol

It's just that, if it comes up with the same number three in a row, that means it's not spitting out random numbers.  So that just leads to the next question, which is "Where the F is that number coming from?".

I've just been playing games with puzzles forever.  When you see a number, the first thing to do is check if it's random or not.  But it would naturally make everyone guess it was random, what with the slot machine look and all.

13517  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What's your 'Retirability' Score? on: December 18, 2006, 02:11:37 PM
Takes about 5 minutes and it tells you how 'well you're doing' in the area of preparing for retirment.
Best if you can listen with the volume up.

Nationwide site.

My score was 185 and that is almost entirely built on the back of having sold my house a year and half ago as that allowed us to pay off the car, college loans and put a good chunk down on our current house.

I took it again as pre-November 2005 me and my score was: 194.  My house was worth $420,000 but of course this doesn't factor in that I could barely pay the mortgage, was struggling to make ends meet, had absolutely no savings and was borrowing money from my parents...  Well it factors in some of those but can't gauge the reality behind the numbers...

Of course it's not a perfect tool, nor does it claim to be...but it is interesting.

If I recall, every time you try to open it, it will match the last three digits of your money.  So when you can do it a few times and it doesn't come up with a random number, that means it's an environmental variable.  Of those, money is the easiest one to manipulate to exact figures.
