Quote from: drake113 on December 29, 2006, 08:53:51 PM

I've sorta been struggling with this very conundrum over the past few days.

I purchased an XBox 360 from my local Best Buy Saturday, and as part of a promo deal (which I had to point out to them, I might add), they were giving away Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter with it.  Not a pack in or anything-- just right off the shelf.  I'm not particularly interested in GRAW; I've heard it's a good game, but if I had my druthers, I would have rather them knock $39 bucks off the cost of the 360 (the cost of GRAW in the store) or give me a $39 gift card.  So I've been kicking around returning GRAW ("Hey, whaddya know?  My girlfriend got me one for Christmas and didn't realize I already had it.  Er... And she lost the receipt.") to BB for store credit and using the $39 in store credit to get something else.

On the one hand, it's not honest and I'm not pretending it is.  On the other hand, though, they were willing to eat the cost of the game so long as it was sold with the 360.  Most likely, they're being compensated for it somehow, and they'll STILL be compensated for it even if I return it because as far as they're concerned, the copy of GRAW they sold with XBox transaction #49404072 is still out there.  Meanwhile, they get GRAW back, unopened, which they can sell (or bundle again) and I get to throw $39 towards a game I'd rather have, most likely Marvel Ultimate Alliance or Rainbow Six: Vegas, both of which are going for $59.

So, in summary, is it dishonest?  Yeah, sure.  Hurting them?  I don't really see how, no.

I don't know that that is dishonest actually...except if you say the part about the GF...

Elite Beat Agents is justification enough for a DS purchase...even if the DS was 300.00.

It may be my game of the year now.

Because if there's no absolute truth (ie. right or wrong) then whomever does the buy and return is above reproach as according to 'their' truth it's okay.  Even in something not as grey as the scenario in the OP. If truth is relative then no one can say something is right or wrong.

If you are looking to punish Saddam the way to do it isnt to kill him, its to let him sit in a jail cell for the rest of his natural life.    He is someone who used to know complete and total control over a country, and at a whim could do anything he wanted to anyone.   Keeping him alive and in captivity would be a far greater punishment then killing him will ever be.

Except that like crime bosses and drug kingpins, I'm sure he'd find a way to run something from behind the jail cell.  And then insurgents raid the jail, free him and it becomes a bigger mess.

Of course killing him could make him a martyr...

No, it only requires an internet connection if you try to play the single player campaign with a player profile that has an XBox Live account tied to it.  I don't know why, exactly, but the advice I got from Microsoft Tech Support was to simply create a offline account, and that worked fine. I'm actually more upset by the fact that there's not any sort of notification that this is the problem-- no error message or anything.  It just refuses to work with no explanation, which is a very amateur hour mistake in what is otherwise a spectacularly polished and professional game.

Well that is just preposterous.

I didn't actually try to play minus the ethernet connection, but my presumption is that it would work fine without it.  But I guess if you're connected, it searches for something...and that something was unavailable last night so there was no joy in mudsville.
13420  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The 'no receipt' return. Ethical or Theivery on: December 28, 2006, 05:50:59 PM
Is it unethical to purchase something at an online retailer and then return it at a B&M store for store credit valued at more than what was originally paid?

Stores like Walmart, BB, Target and a host of others I'm sure, have the 'no receipt return' policy where if you show your driver's license they'll give you store credit. Typically, as with BB and Target, you get one per 365 days. With Walmart I believe it's 2.

Theoretically, it's a win win as the return to company gets the merchandise  + the store credit - the item(s) purchased with the store credit which are sold at markup. Returnee gets the amount returned for - amount paid.

As these policies are in place, presumably for patrons returning gifts that were purchased without a gift receipt etc, is doing the above a violation of that policy and or general ethical constraints?

The limitations mentioned above limit abuse, but is using the policy in such a way wrong?

Actually, it's worse than that.  Since there was no sort of notification that the problem was caused by XBox Live, I assumed that the fact that I couldn't load my single player campaign was caused by a faulty save game file

Me too so I tried to start a new campaign.  It didn't take and I knew something was up.  I hope my original campaign on Insane is still in tact.

Were I to pick one individual sequence I'd point to the mansion towards the end. You're running down a hallway and the second the door in front of you starts to open throw it into shoot dodge mode and open fire. Eternal glory awaits. icon_lol

Yes yes yes! Both Max Paynes had epic gunfights throughout.

Ok ok.

So Superman, presumably, is the most powerful DC comics superhero.

Who is it in Marvel? The hulk? Or...Galactus?

So if Galactus went against Superman who would win?

if Galactus was defeated by the FF and SS, i guess he's not that tough.

So that leaves hulk, who someone said, cannot actually be killed.

So does that mean the Hulk is the king of all superheroes?

I find that most firefights aren't epic enough: they're just too short or the bad guys come from a respawn point.
