Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Oblivion - Character Creation/Description Thread
|
on: March 20, 2006, 03:01:11 PM

Hetz can't be the only one starting Oblivion topics!
I'm curious as to what characters everyone is planning on creating. I'm really struggling with this. I have been reading the strategy guide over and over again on character creation. This is a very important decision for me to enjoy a game. If I don't like my character I will hate playing the game.
Right now I'm trying to decide on whether to lean towards a pure mage type or a combon melee/mage type, such as a spellsword. I'm definitely going to customize as the stategy guide suggests. I also need to come up with a background too. It helps when playing the game. I actually might play two games concurrently using two different characters; one game focusing on the main quest and one focusing on doing other things. I do have this cool idea of playing a "good necromancer" type character who's main goal is to utilize the dearly departed in an attempt to convince existing necromancers to turn good. With this character I would pretty much ignore the main quest and focus on gathering info on the undead and what can be done to unite them for the common good. I wonder if this is feasible in the game?
So, what is everyone thinking about? Race? Type? Character name? What direction do you see you going with your character in the game? Maybe your character can be the great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandson/daughter of your KOTOR characters...

half a terabyte of data transfer. Does that mean people are 'downloading' that much information from the site? Or does that mean that you have that much information stored somewhere. Either way: <whistles>. Sounds like it's time for a contest. How about a late to the platform contest for individuals who only recently purchased a PS2? <cough>

As I look at some of the venerable PS2 franchises, I've naturally come to Metal Gear Solid.
It's intriguing and I find lots of cutscenes a bonus, not a drawback.
Questions about MGS
1. Metal Gear Solid 2 is very highly rated on Gamespot. Typical question: If I haven't played a MG game since MG2 on the NES, will I be lost if I pick up with Part 2?
2. MGS2 was redone for the Xbox and subtitled substance. If I'm going to pick one up, which should I get?
3. Is MGS just a sneaking game like Splinter Cell?
Thanks again.

Shouldn't this be in Off-Topic? Wow I suck. And I even posted in the dang thread and didn't notice where it was. MOVED! No one apparently caught on to my CONSOLE locales as an indicator that it was in the wrong thread. My humor is just too sophisticated....

Thanks for the answers guys...At risk of turning this into a recommend games for me thread, what are some you would recommend?
I'm planning to get DQ8 already as well as the other Shadow Hearts games (unless this one tanks it up). What are some others?
There just seem to be so many established franchises that I can't keep them apart.

Ok. Ok. Ok. I'm late to PS2 so what. Shut up about it . My second game to play is Shadow Hearts as I've heard great things about the subsequent titles. I'm about 3 hrs into it and TOTALLY HOOKED. Sure the writing at times is just plain bad, but I'm riveted. Questions about JRPGs. 1. What are the hallmarks? Beyond the artwork 2. Do lots of japanese characters want to molest the heroines? It's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen in a game...Unusual and uncomfortable 3. Is the FF series considered JRPG? If so, is it worth playing this late in the cycle? Will I dig it? That's all for now.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero question...
|
on: March 14, 2006, 05:57:42 PM
|
If you play it without headphones you hear the click of the strum bar but with headphones that goes away and gives you more of a guitar like feeling. Not if you turn it up really loud. Volume is the difference between rocking and ROCKING! Absolutely. Cranked up on the surround sound system there's no clicking....

However, playing some of them in guitar hero has given me a new appreciation for the giutar work in them. Ditto. It's shocking- even with five buttons- to see how complicated these songs are... I haven't purchased any of the unlockable songs...instead I blew 8 grand on the grim reaper. He's meh.

I'm almost done with the Medium difficullty and have been very impressed by the song selection. I pretty much stopped buying mainstream music after high school and when I became a Christian I pretty much focused my attention in the genre picking up a few secular artists (I love Avril Lavigne ) here and there. But prior to that I was a 'headbanger' and still make it a point to jam to something at least once a week. That said, a lot of the songs in GH are new to me. I've heard of a lot of the bands, but not the songs. There's the SUM41 song that is just awesome. There's that Ace of Spades song that is really good too. Infected by Bad Religion is another one I'd never heard but really like. But I wonder, if I had heard the song on the radio (rather than 'playing' it, if I'd like it). Any gems you've turned up that you really enjoy listening to/playing over and over? The only real DOG that I've heard is 'Take it off' by the Donnas. Blech.

I love their Hotspot podcast and have taken a brief look at their live show On the Spot which looks good too.
Through the Pcasts I've gotten to know some of there personalities, and these folks really know their gaming.
It was fashionable years ago to be anti-gamespot, but I kinda really dig them now...
Chances are most of you have been hitting that site with more consistency than I have, what say you?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Controller Broken Angry
|
on: March 10, 2006, 06:32:00 PM
|
|
For the first time in my life I have raged so hard at a game that in the process of slamming the contoller down, I broke it.
PoP:TTT: Dual boss battle: Guy with the Axe & Guy with the Sword.
I spent close to 3 hours trying to beat this at about the 2 hr mark I threw my controller down so hard that it tore away from the quick rip on the cord.
I plugged it back in and the rumble pack is on full time now. Into the trash it goes.
I had no life upgrades- in fact I didn't know there were any in the game until I read in a gamefaq guide (searching for tips on how to beat them).
I can imagine that if I had the 4 (FOUR!) life upgrades that I missed throughout the game, I could have taken them in 5 or so tries. So mad.
I finally beat them and have moved on.
ATBs top 5 Angry Gaming Moments this generation: (I don't think there are any spoilers)
1. POP:TTT Dual Boss 2. BtVS: Hell level (could not get past the jumping puzzle) 3. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I can't remember the specifics, but I kept dying at this one part and I remember being SUPER hot under the collar 4.Jade Empire: Final boss. Didn't like the game to begin with but had to finish it to justify the $$$. This frustration combined with his superattack or whatever it was made it just not worth it. Played the whole game with grand master on the fights...changed the final boss to easy. 5. Mercenaries: I took down the Ace of Spades, but clipping issues put him under the nuke pad so I couldn't retrieve him. I tried the level 2 more times and then used GOD mode to get my rightfully earned (and pathetic) end cinematic.

I've had good and bad experiences- all the games I received worked, but a couple had scratches all over the place. I handle my games with kid-gloves and make sure they never get damaged and was disappointed in the quality. However, that said, they did work just fine for the most part. If you want AMAZINGLY scratch free games that have perfect manuals and box contents try buying used from http://www.gamefly.com. I was absolutely blown away.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Now I've read it...OXM is retarded...
|
on: March 09, 2006, 01:33:41 PM

I find it a chore to read through OXM in the new format and thus have decided not to renew at the end of the year.
It seems that the mag has gone from a slightly skewed fanboi mag to one that's over the top in praising everything that xbox does.
I predicted that once Rob Smith took over it would go down the drain- far more ads far less content far fewer interesting articles. True, he's probably made it a dozen times more profitable, but probably half as enjoyable as a reader.
Francesa has inherited a sinking ship as far as I'm concerned, content quality and impact wise.
If only Steve Bauman had taken over- true, spelling and proofing mistakes would be on the increase, but the magazine would turn into a gem of a periodical.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What'd You Name Your Band?
|
on: March 07, 2006, 08:09:13 PM
|
|
My first band in Guitar Hero was Canvas Colors. The name for a 'band' I was very briefly in in high school back when I played a little keyboards...
Second Band was Limozeen (thanks SB!)
Third Band and current one for Medium difficulty featuring Jonny Napalm is: Burnin Urine. That was always going to be my band and our first album was going to be Into the Cup.
Sadly I have no talent so GH is my only way to achieve rockstar glory.

1. What is the deciding factor on the star rating for your performance: Is it the score or the note %age? I think it's the latter, but am not sure
2. This question may be redundant: but what do you focus on the most. Score or note %age?
