13401  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Of Trolls and Tribulations: The Hobbit and LOTR Re-Read Discussion Thread on: January 18, 2007, 02:51:37 PM
I've begun my re-read of The Hobbit, with plans to go through the whole series again- this will be my 2nd time- the first coming just after the release of the first movie.

I know many of you are rock bottom geek losers quite vell versed in Tolkien's world, so I'd like to use this thread as a place to ask questions and have a fine time at discussing it.

The first question I have has to do with Trolls.  In the Hobbit there's the famous exchange with the trolls Bill, Tom and Bert and how they capture all the dwarves. Eventually they get arguing over how to eat them and the sun comes up and bam they turn to stone.  Were they different kinds of trolls as they seemed rather capable of speech and thought and tactics...which is decidedly different from the trolls as presented in the movie AFAIK. Also there's no trolls turning to stone in any of the LOTR books...

Trolls play a prominent role in the warefare waged by Mordor and I know that in ROTK (my most recent visit to Middle Earth) that it says that Sauron blackens the skies so that his minions can fight even during the day.

This is fitting as it's night time when they siege Rohan in TTT (movie version).

However, in playing through BFME2, the trolls attack during the day (I know it's not cannon, but it should be true to the universe right?).

So are there various types of trolls or are all susceptible to stone changing in the sun.

Also, what happens to orcs if they get in the sun?  The special ones (can't remember their names) made by Saruman can travel in the day and that's rather shocking to the FOTR.

You know it might help if you didn't force yourself to play games that you aren't enjoying (almost everything I've read from you about BFME2 is predominantly negative so I don't know why you force yourself on that one when there is so much better out there).

Well, it has gotten a bit better.  I'm on the last mission of the good campaign. I just really enjoy the universe and the game is not completely without its merits.  It's just not stupendous.

Started COD2 tonight.  I'm part way through the second moscow mission and...well, I'm not too excited about this one either.  <sigh>

Page 30 of the Hobbit though!

What happened to avoiding late nights?  It's 1:10 AM!

Yes yes I know. I'm simply a mess.

But I played through the ending of the 2nd to last mission on the good campaign in BFME2 and decided to give COD2 a try.

As I settled into sleep last night, I thought to myself "Why did you buy COD2? You couldn't stand Brother's in Arms!"  With that I sadly drifted off to sleep.  I don't know why I got it. I guess for the 'next gen' experience that everyone talked about when it first came out.  Thus far it's typical WWII FPS with all of the frustrations that come with it.

However!!!!!!!!!!!  I LOVE how you advance and fall back depending upon how the battle goes.  I don't, however, like the instant respawn of enemies.  So it's a mixed bag at this point.

Anyone know if COD2 is like GoW that if you beat the game at a higher difficulty level it gives you credit for the lower one's too?

Edit: Actually. Nevermind. Only looks like achievements occur at the hardest setting.  Looks Like I'll be starting over slywink.

13412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Heading Back to Books on: January 17, 2007, 04:03:35 PM
<Should this be in general gaming?>

It has been a grand 7 months. Absolutely grand.

Got the DSL and have played the heck out of it.  I've had some of the greatest gaming moments in my life as a result and my playing time has gone up exponentionally.  It has been a total win win.

Got the 360 and am enjoying it far more than I ever thought I would.  Much of what I doubted has come to pass (liking achievements, the neat friend tracking stuff- I have 84! never thought I'd see the day-, comparing games, gamerscore. 360voice etc) but I'm feeling a little frazzled.

I hit a gaming saturation point.

First:  GoW last night.  I finished the campaign for the 2nd time- this time on Insane- and it was even better the second time through as the enemies are far more difficult to bring down and are far more aggressive.   Also, in MP I hit a big wall.  I just wasn't having fun anymore nor was there anyone I really wanted to play with beyond the Friday nights. So I'm tabling that game (there are still two achievements I want) and am looking forward to new games (COD2!) and getting back into BFME2 though it's a bit of a chore...

There's nothing else out there that I have to have (though RS:V looks great)...so I'm gonna beat these two games and see what happens.

The DS is another but similar story- I've got two games coming to me (PW2 and Hotel Dusk), but Metroid Prime has left me feeling cold because of the poor map and my penchant to get lost.

The 2nd prong in this break is that I re-watched ROTK and am jonesing to re-read the books. So, I started Hobbit again this morning- I'm 6 pages in and totally captivated once more. This will be my 2nd time through the series.

The 3rd prong is that my backlog is significantly thinned due to a fine 2006 and some realistic parsing through the magicks of ebay.  I have 3 total games in the channel on DS (+ the 2 coming), 2 on 360 and 6 on PS2.  Not bad considering it was 30+ just a few weeks back.

The 4th and final prong on this large fork is that I've been a bit over obsessive with gaming. I'm spending lots of time on this wonderful site, I'm listening to gaming podcasts, reading other sites, living vicariously through others who have games I don't have, chatting to people about games, encouraging casual gamers to try games we as a collective have enjoyed etc and not to mention my circadian rhythm is all off due to late nights. I've got to get back on course for marathon training and the arrival of my nephew who will be staying with us for 6 months.

So, when I go away on vacation in 1.5 weeks no gaming anything will be coming with me. This is a stark reversal.  Vacations are a great excuse to catch up, but not this time.  I'm  hoping this helps me mellow out a bit as I dont' want to burn out and not play for weeks and weeks and weeks. I want some more perspective that I don't have to have every game that comes out even if it can be had for the cheap ass price too.

Allow me to explain. No. Is too much.  Let me sum up by re-writing the sentence using the new TruthTeller Mod for simple machines.  It reveals the truth behind the typed word:

Maybe it's time for you who (are actually a pretty good friend of mine that I chat with almost every day over gtalk) to leave (not really and you know that and are probably laughing now too, but those who don't know of our daily jawing probably won't get it cause it's an inside joke except for maybe Mr. Fed who seems to have claravoiance -yeah i'm too lazy to look up the spelling of that word), too (and hopefully people won't take this the wrong way, least of all not a mod who should know that I'm a clown and never attack anyone except when they are being ponderously ridiculous which means that someone must think that Ike is beign ponderously ridiculous and perhaps that's an indictment of his own biases and prejudices rather than anything I actually typed. But you can't fault the man he's great and it is a high pressure position- one worthy of respect and he is responsible for a million posts and even though I'm his favorite he may not have time to read and absorb all the subtleties of my complex and award winning humor)

Don't know why, but I've reached my MP threshold at this point.

Also, I'm only interested in the Dom achievement and the cog tag ones (not interested in any of the ranked matches one)...

I think hes getting 5 years in prison or some such shit.  Haven't really kept up on it, but Keith Olbermann did a piece on it, showing what they actually wrote, and how even a moron would know it was fake "What if" nonsense.

Well I think we've learned that we would have no idea who did it or how to get them.

Hopefully we would wait work the clues, nail down who actually did it and then find a way to knock them out.

On a local level, I'd probably buy some ammo. Maybe a new gun or two in case that was just the pretex to a larger set of attacks and the ensuing chaos to follow.

Was talking about this one with a friend the other night.  We broke it down into four separate scenarios.  In all three, assume that Al-Qaeda takes responsibility for the blast and shouts out to the world what they've done.  For the sake of argument, let's set the nuke at 100 kilotons at ground level--enough to do a heaping helping of damage from the blast AND create fallout.

(1) A "mid-major" city, so to speak.  Something like a, say, Nashville, Tennessee.
(2) A major city that ISN'T NYC or Washington DC
(3) NYC, Wall Street
(4) Washington DC

I'll chime back in later with my own opinions, promise--I don't want my views to influence the discussion (who, moi?)

A couple of guys were arrested for posting something like this a few months back.  Better be careful, big brother *IS* watching, and your constitutional rights are slim these days.

Talk about vagaries.
