13362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gears of War Patch This Week on: January 08, 2007, 08:11:22 PM
Didn't see this anywhere (after looking briefly)

From the Epic Forums (thanks IkeV):

Quote from: Mark Rein

A Gears of War update should start pushing through the system at some point tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, 2007 prior to the two new multiplayer maps being available on Xbox Live Marketplace on Wednesday January 10, 2007.

The maps, plus an introductory video featuring Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski, are free thanks to the kind sponsorship by the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series which launches next Monday January 15th, 2007. Be sure to check out the show to see some really cool firepower. I expect game designers all across the country will be watching the Future Weapons series very carefully looking for ideas for their future games

Here is a list of what was addressed in this update:

• Fixed aspect ratio distortion when using VGA cable with 4:3 displays at resolutions higher than 640x480
• Fixed voice issue with new players joining Player Match games in progress
• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates

My two favorites are the grenade tagging distance nerf and the fix for the audio!

W00t!

I don't understand this one:

Quote
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser

Whas that mean besides the obvious. Why would/should the name be hidden?

Edit again: got it. so people can't team up with their friends...
13363  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / It's Annual Assessment Results Time on: January 08, 2007, 07:17:38 PM
Warning/Disclaimer:   If you don't have a job, have a job you hate, are broke, are underpaid, have a boss who verbally abuses you, have cancer of the testicles, are going to point out that there are people in the world with no eyes or feet, or if your town, city, region, state are suffering through the worst depression of economy in history, that doesn't mean I can't complain about crappy raises so don't bring any of those points up in an attempt to make it sound like I'm ungrateful.

<inhales>

Just got word that I should be finding out what the results were for my annual assessment some time this week.  It's supposed to be my best assessment ever- after being passed over for a rightful promotion 2 straight years and then getting blind sided last year by negative feedback that no one brought up during the year previous review cycle, I'm not optimistic.

I should finally be promoted this year (again, probably won't happen), but more importantly, I'm looking to break passed the 3% annual pay increase that I've gotten 3 of the past 4 years.  Really, 4% would make me happy.  A piddling 4%.  Come on bosses! You can DO it!

Elite Beat Agents! Phoenix Wright!  Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time!

Haven't tried contact, but would like to.  Gonna finish my remaining backlog first though.

Wait wait wait!

I have it now.

Ever see Maverick with Mel Gibson? He played the first hour of poker and guaranteed that he'd lose. Then he started playing and then cleaned the table.  That's what Calvin did.

As Maverick did with the poker player's tells, Calvin used his 'fight' with his 'girlfriend' to watch our techniques for the first hour and then he came back on and blasted us to bits.

Muhahaahaha.  I'm on to you, but there's something you should know! I'm not left handed.

Hmm. In testing it shows that the person has posted but just omits the text of their post. I can see threads they've started and everything. What good is that? I want people I ignore to no longer exist to me.

Perhaps it's because those threads and posts already existed and now when they post I won't see anything?

5. Have an option to bypass the safety warning on every boot up.  Good golly.  Please let me toggle it off.

I really do hate that.

My biggest complaint is I get hand cramps way too easy with it. Especially with action games. I just can't play it for long periods of time. I guess they can't really fix that though without making it bigger.

I was discussing this with a friend at work, he received a DSL for Christmas.

Their is a 3rd party 'base' made for this, it has larger, round handgrips (here is one with added storage, and one with additional batteries).  I'm thinking about getting one, since my hands are way too big for the little DS Lite.  Depending on the game/control settings, various parts of my hand can get cramped after a long time playing.  The worst is a game like Metroid, where you will be holding down the corner button for extended periods of time.

Those are pretty cool!

Nuke MC? No, but I think this does go a long way towards proving just how much of a problem the southern border has become. What will it take, another attack? some deaths maybe? some rapes or murders of citizens? Tell me, what will it take before we all stand up, united as a nation, and say to our leaders that we need to do what it takes to ensure the security of our nations borders? Answer that if you can.

13384  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How Would You Improve the DS Lite? on: January 08, 2007, 03:02:01 AM
If you were on the design team and could improve the handheld from a hardware perspective, how would you do it?

1. Be able to get to the system menu from within a game: so you can check what time it is, adjust the brightness etc without having to back out... power down, power on, make the changes, insert the cartridge, power back on etc.

2. Be able to boot a game from the systems menu.  Basically, if you start the DS with no game in, you have to power it back down insert the cartridge and power back on

3. Onboard memory.  I'm fairly positive, despite its small stature, that they could fit some kind of onboard memory.  I'm not asking for much, but some would be nice.  This would allow you to save demos from DL stations and or maybe a song or too.

4. Move the headphone jack to the back. Not too troublesome, but it is in an awkward place

5. Have an option to bypass the safety warning on every boot up.  Good golly.  Please let me toggle it off.

Advanced Wars Dual Strike.  29 Missions.  Amazing AI. Incredible unit variety.  Superb balancing.  Neat extras. Brilliant skirmish scenarios. BRAVO!

Questions:

1. Any word on a sequel in development?
2. How well did it sell?  I guess that will answer #1 too.
3. Was there one before it? My guess is it would have been a GBA title. If so, worth getting?
4. Can anyone think of a TBS game that is as good or better- on any platform?  I could toss in Disciples 2 (my all time favorite PC game) and HOMMIII (really my first TBS game), but the balancing and excellent AI of AWDS tops them all in my book.
5. If you own a DS and like TBS and haven't played it...why are you so stupid and ugly?

The one thing that has me a little concerned, though, is the total openness of the world with seemingly no real story or missions to propel the player along.  I love screwing around and doing all sorts of crazy things in these games as much as the next guy (if not more), but I also like to be able to do a mission or two now and then to feel like I'm making progress.  I guess it might not be bad as long as they clearly show the player where the gang bosses and kingpins are and the details of their relationship like he explained in the interview.

If it is completely free flowing as suggested above, they just lost a sale.  I want a cohesive progression. Not 100% sandbox.  Meh.
