13361  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Hillary Announces White House Run. Oh God No... on: January 20, 2007, 07:58:33 PM

Quote from: Kobra on January 20, 2007, 07:49:58 PM

As for Bush being the worst president in history, I think about every poll I have ever seen says he is, even "That" other forum says so;

http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=35191&highlight=president

In general, I have yet to find/read any poll that says otherwise, anywhere.  Based on people that research presidents I have talked to, they seem to also agree, bush has caused more harm to this country than any president.  I think it is pretty clear he will be remembered as a giant failure.

Once the full ramifications of his crimes come out, this will be assured.

Such BS.  Do polls now and ask which game is the best one ever: something that came out now or something that came out 10 years ago and the one that's fresh will win.  Same with presidents. That's why so many recent crap albums are on the 100 best lists. The opposite is true as well.

Ask the question in 20 years when most of the middle east is a peaceful democracy and GWB will probably be 2nd only to GW*.

As for Hilary, I think the Dems will make a huge mistake if she is the one who actually runs as the Dem hopeful for prez. She's very polarizing and I bet moderate to slightly left independents will vote against her for her competition. Not to mention, it will galvanize all the disilussioned Repubs to get back to the polls.

Easy win for the Repubs if Hilary wins the nom.

*Yes I can say preposterously inconceivable things too!

Most overrated game of 2006.  Period.

It's the same thing over and over. Minor variations in the colossi, but basically they're all the same.

You spend more time wandering than fighting.

No story to speak of.  I'm killing these things to raise this chick?  Is it his Sister? Mother? Twin? Does she owe him money? Blah blah.

Most overrated game of 2006. Period.

okay,... the first case is fine, somewhat short, & serves as something of an intro/tutorial. the second case is much more expansive, introduces some new 'regulars', & is pretty satisfactory, if not really special... but then comes the third case, & that's when the game truly plunges headlong into the amazing/psychotic no-holds-barred world of phoenix wright...

Awesome!

I'm almost done with the 1st case (I think) and I like the whole tutorial simplifed mechanics to get the appetite whet.

I'm really enjoying it thus far.

They said it's more like Hulk Ultimate Destruction or whatever it was.

Haven't heard the whole segment yet, but they're raving about it though.

So, I grabbed a used copy tonight and played for about 90 minutes.  Actually, I spent 60 of those minutes fighting the controls and the final 30 playing around with the first Colossi while still fighting the controls.  Definitely not my thing  icon_frown -  I'm going to see if I can return it tomorrow at EB.

Yep. It sucks.

It gives a controller lay out and they are specifically for controlling the vehicles.  It's rather unclear about how you have to decide which unit to build etc.  I enjoyed my 20 minutes with it and would be up for some tonight instead of GoW....

13379  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Can we talk batteries for a mo? on: January 19, 2007, 04:10:21 PM
Coming up, rechargeable batteries had memory. So if you recharged them before they were completely worn out, they would not recharge as much as capacity ever again.

Fast forward to today.

I have rechargeable batteries in my cell phone, laptop, DS and now my 360 controller.

Are these the types of batteries that have memory?  Do I need to continue to run them all the way down before recharging?

For example: despite the tactical exposure it gives me in MP games when my controller dies (and thus giving Calvin his only real chance to kill me in GoW) I let the battery run all the way down until I get the please reconnect the controller message. With my laptop I typically let it go as close to dead as possible. Same thing with the cell phone. Is this necessary?

Follow up: If I leave one of these batteries on the charger after it's fully charged does that do damage too? i remember the early rechargeables shouldn't have been left on too much after full charge. That still the case?

The machinations I've taken on this site are complicated too.

There was GG of course, when I was a PC gamer. Then I got the xbox in 2002 and started looking at this site a bit.  Then there was the collapse and I spent most of my time at OO.  Then BC split off and I spent most of my time there.  Now, I'm comfortable in saying that GT is my home on the net.

Brilliant place this is.

Quote from: Kevin Grey on January 19, 2007, 06:16:00 AM

Yeah, I don't get what it is about gaming that makes people periodically proclaim "stop the presses, I'm no longer going to be gaming!" (see ATB's couple day old thread).  It's a hobby, like any other.  Do it when you feel like it and derive enjoyment from it.  If you would rather be doing something else, then no biggie, do that instead.  I'm not sure what it is that drives so many people to segregate it from everything else they do in their lives.  It's like some sort of binary state- "gaming" or "not gaming".  I can't recall having seen a similar number of threads titled "I don't think I can read anymore" or "I don't think I can continue to watch movies" on forums that cater to those activities.

Well, for me, it's because video gaming is something I absolutely love.  It is my favorite hobby and it dominates my free time, my reading, my web browsing (GT, BC, Gamespot, CAG), my listening (1up yours, Hotspot, Cagcast), my anticipation (new games I must have coming out all the time), my free spending money etc.

So for me, at least, it's a big deal to post a thread saying that I'm putting the breaks on it or walking away for a while.  I reckon I posted it cause you guys are my homies with regard to video gaming and we all share a common bond about our ethusiasm for them (not to mention the long ties all the way back to GG, CG, OO and BC- I mean I've been interacting with some of you for about 8 years now- that's something!).

I guess if this was a sewing forum and all we talked about was sewing (man that new stitch remover by Kenmore is the l33t!), I wouldn't find it out of the ordinary to start a thread saying that I'm taking a break to go crochet...likewise a book forum etc.

So KG, love us when we're down, encourage us when we're struggling, hold our hands when we need advice and let us go when we must take a break.  I know it's hard. It's hard for us too.

The constant respawn is atrocious, but I'm enjoying the experience much more.

Note to self: No more WWII FPS...ever.
13390  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best Controller Ever? Also: Gesture Based Gaming. What's its Impact? on: January 18, 2007, 09:31:38 PM
Boys at 1up were talking about the future of gaming and whether the Wii's initial success will result in changes for Sony and MS in their consoles with regard to control schemes, whether current gen or future tech.

There was harping about how gesture based gaming and if the industry goes overboard with its adoption how it may alienate the hardcore audience who don't want to do everything by gesturing even as it may hook new gamers to the hobby.

That got me to thinking about which controller I prefer the most and it's a very tight race between the Dualshock and the 360 controller.

The dualshock was a revolutionary design, IMO, and the 360 controller has improved upon it (better placement of the sticks, better placement of the back/start button combo) and in many ways bested it (wireless capability, microphone jack, interface with the console from the controller).

So at this stage, I'd have to say the 360 controller.

I have briefly played the Wii and very much enjoyed the experience. However, I don't ever see the Wiimote replacing my gamepad/analog stick combo, well, ever.

I'm intersted in what folks who have both the 360 and the PS3 have to say about both.  Also, I wonder how many people will say Wavebird or the Dreamcast controller...

Final note: I think the 360 controller should become the standard for all MS platforms moving forward. If they feel the must include motion sensitivity, it should be on the same exact form factor.

I just played one quick match.  Let me tell you: this game has huge potential for MP. WOW

I was a japanese cruiser and had a dude with a battle ship and another guy with a cruiser.  We blasted the US fleet to bits and I even sunk an aircraft carrier with my artillery.

What's neat is when you're damaged you can direct your crew to put out fires etc.

I really enjoyed it and if I had the manual and knew how to play, that would make it even better.  icon_lol
