I think the problem here is not that there are no hot women at your school, but that the hot girls don't give a fuck (quite literally in your case) enough about you to give you any play at all.
Perhaps, but based on my research that's the condition for most males on this campus.  Either Northwestern guys are innately lame, (not outside the realm of possibility), or that's the prevalent social atmosphere.

Of course, from the girls I've talked to about the issue, it seems like the finer sex isn't faring much better either.  From what it sounds like, no one's getting laid at Northwestern.

Yeah, time to wake up and realize the cold hard truth: the hot women at your school obviously feel the exact same way about you.  Suspension of disbelief only gets you so far, but as they say:  Ignorance is bliss

The Zodiac Spear chests are pure nonsense because there is no warning, either before or after you open them, that you've just fucked yourself over.

Chrono Trigger had a very similar mechanic with the "Mysteriously Sealed" chests, ie, those black ones with the emblems on them -- if you remember, the gear in those chests was better if you opened them in a certain era.  What CT did right over FF12 was to make it clear you were fiddling with something important -- not only did you have to wait til the late mid-game to even open the chests, but it asked you if you were sure you wanted to break the seal on a chest before it popped open.  At least there was SOME clue that the chests were special.

So he calls the closest GameCrazy and they say they have a "few" copies.

So I drive down there, in a new area, so it's a little stressful, and it's a bit of a drive in traffic, and I get to that GameCrazy, ask them if they have any copies of FIFA 07 and they do!  Except they're all preordered.

ok i just picked this up today and i've got a few questions.   I've read where this is a slow started, so maybe that will answer some of my questions.

#1  Does the combat pace pick up after leveling a bit?  Watching that attack bar slowly move back and worth before i can swing my sword is painfully dull.  I'm assuming this speeds up, correct?  And at what point will this happen?

#2  How is everyone managing your characters early on?  I just went out to the desert to hunt that first mark (the tomato monsters) and i used all my potions trying to kill the wolfs and eventually ran out and died fighting.  I'm kinda ticked because i lost nearly an hour of playtime between saves and i still never saw where the mark was located at.  So how should i manage my character early on?  Am i doing something wrong?

#3  Any suggestions on how to get through the early game a little better?  I know it's only a couple hours in, but combat is boring me to tears already.  Am i missing something?
1.)  Go into Config and raise the combat speed.

2.)  Go buy Cure at the Magic store and give Vaan White Magic 1.  MP regains while you walk, so it's practically limitless out-of-combat heals at this stage.  Also, Steal from absolutely everything, every time.  Money is extremely tight in this game, you'll need all the "Loot" items you can get if you expect to keep gear and magic up to date.

3.)  Honestly I found combat boring until about 20 hours in, where I am now.  You get Gambits at about 8-10 hours in, IIRC, which eases the boredom somewhat by making most 'trash' fights automatic and quick.

The game's pace is glacial to the point of inducing pain.  Things are finally getting interesting at 20 hours in, but quite honestly, those first 20 hours were almost based on faith/the MMO or Diablo "one more level" addiction alone.

Why watered down and less focused?  It's still better to make the characters specialize than it is to try and be a jack of all trades.
Actually, everything I've seen so far is exactly contrary to that.  For instance, it's "highly recommended," to the point of almost required, that every character have White Magic up to your current strongest Cure spell.

The path of least resistance is jack-of-all-trades modular characters, because with a 3-person party, you just don't have enough room for strict specialization.  Furthermore, there is no bonus for specialization or penalty for generalism.

It would have been nice if equipment licences encouraged specialization more too.  I think an augment-like system would have done it -- for example, Light Armor 1 would unlock the appropriate gear, and also grant a cumulative bonus to Speed and Evasion to the character when he's wearing Light Armor.

Accessories "make sense" as requiring licences to equip, since they're pretty powerful and unique right from the start.  Weapons and Armor needed a specialization bonus, though.

About the hunts, is it just me or are they ridiculously hard after the first four? I've tried a number of them and I'm not even coming close to defeating these guys. I thought the hunts would be an amusing diversion form the storyline stuff, but they've become a pain and I'm skipping them for now.
You should know that any hunts you get from Monteblanc (the moogle) are "Elite" hunts that are, according to my quick stat comparison, about three times harder than "normal" hunts you get off the bulletin boards.

Anyway.  My thoughts on the game after 14 hours:

-Thusfar, the story is exhaustingly slow with very little keeping me interested, other than the hope that getting Ashe in my party will finally get things rolling.

-At this stage, combat is extremely physical-oriented (based in part, I think, on the limited Gambit selections you have this early).  MP is low, making you need to babysit every cast lest you run out of mana for the inevitable cure-spam you'll need if you're against a boss/mark/an enemy who can multi-attack.  There is very little reason not to just auto-attack through everything -- watching the auto-attack animations is actually faster than diving through several menus just to cast "Fire."

-I can see the power of gambits, but based on the few target choices you have early in the game, they're pretty much limited to the basic "auto attack" and "cure when ally < 50%."

-I vastly prefer FF10's Grid to 12's Licence Board.  Defined roles with the chance to customize/branch later = awesome.  Hodgepodge of skills + combat that encourages all your characters to be jack-of-all-trades and discourages specialization = lame.

Overall, I'm sort of disappointed that they didn't trust their end-users enough to make the early game more than a tutorial/prologue.  The game is quite disappointingly basic at this stage, and I'm chomping at the bit for things to get interesting and challenging beyond "everyone autoattack and spam Cure."

Patrick Bateman: Well, let's just say hypotetically ok? What if they have a great personality?
[pause, all laugh]
Patrick Bateman: I know, I know.
[all in unison]
Patrick Bateman, Craig McDermott, David Van Patten: There are no girls with good personalities.
David Van Patten: A good personality consists of a chick with a little hard body, who will satisfy all sexual demands without being too slutty about things, and who essentially will keep her dumb fucking mouth shut.
Craig McDermott: The only girls with good personalities who are smart or maybe funny or halfway intelligent or talented, though god knows what the fuck that means, are ugly chicks.
David Van Patten: Absolutely.
Craig McDermott: And this is because they have to make up for how fucking unnattractive they are.

...which is actually accurate, sadly (is it sad?).

I've taken a few Gender Studies classes during my time here.  Mostly to pick up chicks, so I guess I was sort of missing the point to begin with, but I learned some things too.

There was a story my professor told when we were discussing this very issue, of personality and attractiveness.  Basically, there were these two twin girls.  Both super-attractive.  They partied hard, very social, and their grades suffered for it.  They got everything they wanted just by being beautiful.

Anyway, one night, one of the twins gets in a car wreck.  She's pretty badly disfigured, it'll cost alot of money and take a bunch of time for her to get back to looking the way she used to, and even then, she'd never be AS beautiful as she once was.

The other twin, mournful as she was about her sister, didn't change how she lived her life.  She was still beautiful, and got everything she wanted from that.  Her grades stayed the same.

The disfigured twin?  Suddenly she became a genius.  Her grades skyrocketed to the point of making all A-s.  She became the leader of some student organization and was a very charismatic, insightful honcho.

The lesson?  Girls -- or perhaps people in general -- don't practice or show their intelligence unless they have to.  Indeed, intelligent girls are often threatening to guys who are attracted to them, due to the whole patriarchial nature of our soceity.

Was in, now out.  A suitemate is getting a Wii for sure, and I'll get to play Zelda on it 'cause I let him borrow Okami after I was done.

I dont quite agree with being viewed as what you think you are.  For example, I know some white people that walk around in what would be considered African American attire and listen to rap music and talk in ebonics.  They view themselves as black, while everyone else views them as a wannabe.
The kicker is confidence.  If the white guy was confident about being a rapper, he'd be considered a rapper.  See:  Eminem, Beastie Boys.

The kicker is talent and hard work.  If a white guy is confident about being a rapper but has no aptitude and isn't willing to work to develop it, he's considered something else.
Yes that too.

I am confident I am attractive.   I'm not as confident that I'm a nice guy, or even a safe person to be around.  I'm working on that stuff -- not to actually be nice, but to pass off as being safe enough to get naked around.

So you're the Vanilla Ice of pickup artists.
Haha!  Sure, maybe at this point.  I make no pretense of being a pickup artist yet -- while I'm starting to get the fundamentals down, that's just a foundation that you have to build on.  Pickup is a skill, and like you mentioned, skills take hard work, practice, and study.

What if she was a really hot black woman?  (I assume you're white, though I don't know why that is.  Just some vibe.)

So let's say she's not that hot to you, though she is to many.  Would you allow her to actualize you?  Or would that thought disgust you?  And let's say you were attending a fine, historically black college such as Morehouse, where Spellman across the street has oodles of 7s and 9s, by the standards of black men.

Would you still complain as much as you do at Northwestern?
The thought doesn't disgust me, but it doesn't particularly attract me either.  I'm a white boy from the south, black chicks never turned me on.

And would I complain as much?  I'd probably complain more, since, like I said, black girls just don't do it for me.  OTOH, if the predominant rating system was run by black males attracted to black females, that would imply that white girls are devalued, and thus must try harder, which would up my chances.  So who knows.

Waitasec, maybe I mis-interpreted "actualize."  I thought you meant "screw," as in, a euphemism for intercoursage.  Was I wrong?

Fat girls try harder.

Think about it.

If they've actually gotten porked before, sure.

Regardless, I like the way you think.
