Ouch, Wii isn't faring well outside of Zelda, and rumors are, the GameCube version controls better anyway.

Once again, I honestly believe the Wii is different enough from the GameCube to ever be a giant success.

I beg to differ

I also think the poor scores for Excite Truck may be unwarranted. An Opposing viewpoint from Tom Chick on Yahoo
Chick only likes Excite Truck since it's from the same developers as the abysmal Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, which was reviled for the shoddy piece of crap it was by everyone but Tom.

He has his brain farts -- this obsession with shitty racers being the most recent in the long decline which began with him panning Deus Ex.

Uh, yeah... there's a whole mission-based plot along with plenty of side-quests.

Big N ain't going anywhere.
And it's a shame they aren't.  Nintendo could easily out-Sega Sega as a pure software developer (at least for the home consoles, there's no way they'd give up handhelds with a, what, 90% market share)?

Plus we wouldn't have to buy their shitty hardware just to get at their games.  Mario Galaxy and/or Zelda on the 360, utilizing the 360 = heaven.

Who was to forsee that developers would basically ignore the second screen and touch functions?  As it's been said before countless times, most of the DS's best games make little to no use of either the second screen, touch features, or both.

Short of an unforseen, 50%-of-PS3s-exploding-into-showers-of-magma debacle for Sony, I predict:

Japan:
1.) PS3 & Wii (close to tied)
3.) XBox 360

USA + Europe:
1.) XBox 360 & PS3 (again, tied)
3.) Wii

Worldwide:
1.) PS3
2.) XBox 360 & Wii (tied)

Reasoning:

-Playstation brand utterly dominates the home console market, and has for years.
-Microsoft's made a quality product and is getting some sweet games on it, but they still have absolutely no power in Japan, and probably never will, unless they start making changes to their business model, which they won't.
-In the US, the Wii will be seen as a gimmick and a child's system, or even worse, a system for that snooty sack of shit artiste guy (who doesn't actually game, mind you, but people won't buy the system 'cause they don't want to be that snooty sack of shit), sort of like Apple computers.  In Japan, you could sell spent uranium fuel rods to people as long as you scrawled "Nintendo" on the box.  Which is actually a good idea for the problem of nuclear waste.

Actually he doesn't. A 6/10 on their scoring scale means an above average game.

On their scale methinks LE would give it a 2 or a 3.
Youthinks?

Read the first sentence of Mr. Green's review:

Quote
Neverwinter Nights 2 is about two patches away from being a good game.

That's how I feel about it.  Except I'd say two "major" patches.  If you count hotfixes and module fixes as patches, and not just engine fixes like the game so desperately needs, I expect four or five patches til the game is playable by my standards.

Playable means:

-It performs like it should on my system.  That means a minimum of a constant 30 FPS with, say, 90% of the features enabled.  Turning it down to NWN1-quality and getting 20 FPS is not fucking acceptable.
-The AI is completely, utterly overhauled.  I don't give two shits if you think it works fine, or that it's "roleplaying" that the fuckwit dwarf has to knockdown everything he comes across, or the mage burns all her spells immediately, or that the druid tries to ghetto melee everything.  The AI is B-R-O-K-E-N.  And if you say otherwise, no sry you are wrong, sit down.
-There's not some obnoxious half-second lag for everything I want to do, from moving the camera to attacking an opponent to opening a box.  When I click, I want the game to respond IMMEDIATELY.  Again, this is just shoddy-ass programming.

Fix that shit and the game's "playable," and then deserves to be judged based on its actual content.
65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy XII Impressions on: November 14, 2006, 06:24:56 PM
Here's what I did for the optional Demon Wall:

Party was Vaan (Daggers + Light Armor + Shield), Basch (Axes & Hammers, Heavy Armor, Shield), and Penelo (Caster, emphasis Black > White = Arcane = Space/Time > Green)

BEFORE THE FIGHT:

-Turned off all healing gambits.  (This fight is pure DPS).
-Set up Vaan's gambits so he'd remove Blind.
-Cast Protect on everyone.
-Berserked Basch, who was using the hammer-type weapon purchased from the merchant outside the tomb.
-Cast Reflect on everyone.

DURING THE FIGHT:

-Took manual control of Penelo and spammed Dark on my own party.  When Reflect is up, this is devastating, because not only do you get a damage bonus from Reflecting off something, but the spell damage gets tripled, effectively, since it's reflected off your three party members onto the single target.
-Only Vaan had a Quickening at this point, so I burned it, but it didn't do alot of damage.

Runs like shit for how mediocre it looks, camera is terrible, party-based game with braindead party.

Says you.
So you can tell me with a straight face that the game doesn't run like shit for how mediocre it looks?  Son, I got fucking 30-40 frames outside in HDR Oblivion, and 60+ inside.  I have to turn off all shadows, ground normal mapping, and turn down other bells-n-whistles settings JUST TO GET TWENTY BLOODY FRAMES A SECOND in NWN2.  The game is NOT that good-looking or complex to warrant bullshit like that.  It's just assy, amateur programming.

Speaking of assy, amateur programming:  the companion AI is objectively bad to the point of broken.  Not just spellcasting AI, I'm talking ANY companion AI.  The Jaheria-clone Druid just shapeshifts into some weak ass form and ignores all her spells.  Every fighter stays 20 feet behind you til the fight's half over, then moseys in circles around your opponents, popping Attacks of Opportunity as he clumsily tries to use Knockdown (regardless if "use combat feats" is on or off) like a fucking wasted Orville Redenbacher.  And casters of any sort just burn all their spells on the first fight.  Good game.

That leaves the only matter that opinion can actually factor into: the camera.  Maybe you're an idiot savant and the syrupy, off-angle camera makes sense you to.  Maybe you like struggling with the mouse wheel, trying to find just the right spot between the dungeon wall and your character's ass -- but even then you can only see two feet in front of you, so why the fuck bother?  It's sloppy, unresponsive, and miscalibrated.  But hey, some people actually get off on digging through other peoples' waste.

See, now you want to talk about real matters of opinion, I could get into the yawner of a storyline replete with every fantasy cliche known to man, or the trivial, vapid combat, or the utter lack of roleplaying or freedom.  THAT is opinion stuff.  Heaven knows there are still some people who just adore dialog trees with might-as-well-be-clearly-labelled-cause-they-appear-in-the-same-order-every-time Good/Neutral/Evil responses.  Some people are just stupid and/or naive enough to think that constitutes "roleplaying" or "freedom."

Really not understanding the extreme negativity here. I mean sure the game isn't perfect, but it is very, very high on my list of games released in the last two years. Very high. For its flaws, it is still a hell of a lot of fun.
Runs like shit for how mediocre it looks, camera is terrible, party-based game with braindead party.

These are all objective, technical issues.  Which means there is nothing to "understand" about the negativity.  Either you can cope with shitty frames per second, a gimp camera, and puppet mode just to have your party members actually fucking defend themselves, or you rightfully wager that no matter how great whatever's under these problems is, the game is just fundamentally unenjoyable due to them.

So you shelve it til the first half-dozen patches are done.
77  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Gears of War-Impressions on: November 13, 2006, 12:38:03 AM
Finished the entire game on Hardcore tonite.  Planning on co-oping through Insane with my brother at some point.  And I still need to try Multi.

Gripes I had:

-The friendly AI is embarassingly bad.  This confused me because the enemy AI was actually pretty good.

-Suppressive fire didn't always "work" when it should have.  I understand the heavily armored shotgun guys are basically balls-to-the-wall rushers, but enemy rifle infantry or light infantry responding to suppressive fire was kind of spotty and made some sections frustrating (like the push-the-car-across-the-bridge thing).

-Some stuff is sort of ridiculous, at least on Hardcore.  The section right after you get the Bow, for instance, took me 20+ tries.  The final boss was also sort of assy, but I felt like he was actually pretty straightforward/"fair" once your tactics and reflexes were down.

Aside from those issues, (and a weak story for a post-Half-Life 2 world), the game is fucking incredible.

Sorry if this is a bit off, I don't actually own the game yet.  I see a bit of complaining about the party AI and controls and such, I thought this was mostly a single character game.  Am I wrong?  I've never been big on trying to control a bunch of characters and I think that would kill the game for me, especially if the AI is bad and you have to manually control everybody.

No, unlike NWN1, this one is party based like BG2.
And what a mistake that was, considering how atrocious the AI is.
