Buy a used Steelcase from Craigslist. You should be able to find one in that range. There are no good new chairs <$200. I'm partial to Aerons myself, and I got one on Craigslist for $300. Steelcase doesn't have quite the name recognition, so they can be found even cheaper.

Looks like I'm going to go see Mastodon, Kvelertak and Gojira in May.  Stoked.  I heard Mastodon just finished their new album.

Here's hoping it's a step in the opposite direction from the last one. While I didn't hate it like a lot of people did, it was certainly no Crack the Skye or Blood Mountain.

Penny Arcade Report was noting that Target stores are giving $200 Target gift cards for ANY functional iPad, regardless of model or condition [ONLY Nov. 3-9]. So if you have a crappy old 1st gen or iPad 2 that still works, it seems like a good deal. On more recent models, can probably get better from Gazelle and the zillion other trade-in companies (or eBay etc.). I might to do it with my 3rd gen for simplicity's sake (most trade-ins I've checked on it are about $210 range).

Thanks for highlighting this deal... I just took advantage of it to unload my clunky 1st gen iPad. Unfortunately, they were all out of iPad Airs (this despite their online site saying the store had it online), so I'm now the proud owner of a $200 target gift card but no iPad.

My kid is gonna freak when there's no iPad in the house when he wakes up tomorrow.  icon_biggrin

Yes, thanks for letting us know! I did the same thing as Captain Caveman. In completely unrelated news, I have a $200 gift card for sale...  paranoid ninja icon_biggrin

I got this when I traded in my iPad yesterday. My family doesn't really shop at Target, but the deal was too good to pass up. I'd like to sell it for $180, or if someone has some Amazon credit that they'd want to trade for Target credit, that would work too.

Thanks!

It's a great show, but I would stop after the fourth episode of the third season (Do not stop before those four episodes though, they may be the best of the entire series). Make up your own ending as if the show was cancelled (it's a good spot). The series then falls off a massive cliff. No one has ever taken this advice, but everyone who I've given it to tells me after that they wish they did Tongue.

Ok guys, I need some quick advise:

I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow that will involve about 14 hours driving over the course of the next week. Luckily, I'm not doing any driving. And since it's always nice to be anti-social in a car, I'm looking for an iPhone game recommendation for this trip. Preferably the game will be something that will keep my interest for at least a good part of those 14 hours (bonus if longer). Additional bonus if it doesn't drain the battery within two hours (I have the new iPod Touch and so far the battery has been pretty good but that means it can't rely on WiFi). I generally prefer strategy games and roleplaying games, so anything in that genre will work well. I already have King of Dragon's Pass and Dragon Island Blue (and have played them out more or less). Games that aren't free are fine. Thanks.

Final Fantasy Tactics is half price right now. Great if you've never played it, still pretty good even if you have. The Ascension card game is quite good as well and I've probably thrown away a couple dozen hours playing it.
11  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Good sites to buy boardgames? on: November 06, 2012, 04:36:19 AM
Coolstuff Inc, Miniature Market and Boards and Bits are my mainstays. Of those, I'd say CSI generally has the worst prices, but the best selection. MM and B&B vary back and forth pricewise.

It didn't get much media coverage, but there was a fairly big ruckus at the RNC when Paul's delegates from Maine got unseated so that he couldn't get nominated from the floor. I'm guessing that's what she's protesting.

19  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Laptop: Apple or Windows on: February 17, 2012, 06:16:17 PM
The bang part is completely subjective. Bang is user experience. The buck part is easy. Your cost per year of owning the item is (Initial cost - Resale value)/(Years owned). I would posit that the buck part of the equation is far less of a discrepancy than you're making it out to be due to the fact that a) the resale value of the Mac is much higher and b) Macs are better built than all but the most expensive Windows laptops, so will last longer.

And always keep in mind it's very easy to set up a dual boot to Windows if you need it for some reason.

That goes both ways - you could also dual-boot or run a VM of a Hackintosh.

This is not equivalent. I have a hackintosh desktop, and it was a pain in the ass to setup. It's also a pain to maintain. It's even harder on a laptop to get it working correctly. Installing Bootcamp is trivial.

Homebrew is essential for installing utilities at the command line. You can do things like "brew install git" and it will install git and all of the needed dependencies.

Donald X. Vaccarino does not endorse this app and explicitly says it violates his rule for fan made versions not to use original art. Their statement that it is officially endorsed is a flat out lie.

28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Recommend me a programming language on: June 22, 2011, 07:25:53 PM
There's also pygame, which is a python wrapper around SDL, a multiplatform API that has helped many an Indie developer. I prototype a lot of my games in pygame before deciding if I want to take them to a beefier platform. If you're just looking to learn programming, and do simple game development, I'd highly recommend it. VB is the wrong direction. VB is made for interfacing with the Microsoft's ecosystem and making generic Windows apps.  But if you're having fun, it's all good.

I've been a software engineer for over a decade. I used to say scripting engines were for amateurs, which was kind of true, but things have changed. If you want to learn to be a software engineer, I'd say to start with C, because you won't be given anything high level, and you'll have to learn how everything works before moving on to a richer language like C++ or Java. If you want to learn to program, there is no cleaner language than python. As a bonus, a lot of game engines do their scripting using python, so you'll be able to do mods as well.

Maybe you can start up another thread getting people to send money to the Confederacy. This thread is about Japan.

This is the full, shrink-wrapped, retail version. It goes for $700 retail, and ~$550 on eBay. I'm willing to sell it here for $500 shipped. I have +17 trading feedback, and will ship priority mail with insurance. If you don't think the price is fair, make me an offer, you never know!

edit: I had +16 in the old feedback system, but it didn't get transferred over to the new one. The new one only shows +1.

Also, HBO, when you send it over here please sell it to the BBC, so I don't have to suffer through an advert break every five minutes.  Ta.

It's already been announced in the UK:

One more thing.

I'd say one of the best intro to boardgaming games is Acquire.  If you read the description, it sounds like the most boring game on Earth.  In fact, it sat on my shelf for two years before I played it because it just didn't sound appealing.  Since then, it is one of our most played games, and I've played it with dozens of n00bs including my Mom.  Everyone to a man has loved it and asks about playing it when they come over.  It has been a major gateway to some of the more complex Euro style games.
37  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Getting Back Into Board Games on: December 29, 2010, 06:01:37 PM
Dominion's fantasy theme is very light with the exception of the Alchemy expansion.  The theme pretty much fades away once you start playing and are just trying to figure out what the cards do and how they can work together.  I'd say get the original game and then if that catches on, you can start to dig into the expansions.

Also, Intrigue does not support 6 out of the box.  You need either the original, or another set of Intrigue in order to play 6 or two tables of 4.
