Picked this up last night. The IAP pricing is crazy at first glance, but I think this iOS version may be a more cost-effective way than the 3DS to get just the songs I want and skip the ones I don't. The IAP breaks down like this:
- Each numbered FF game has a "bundle" of 4 songs for $2.99 each
- You can buy a selection of individual tracks from each game (including Tactics, X-2, Advent Children, and others) for $.99 each. My understanding is that the 3DS version did the same thing.
- Unclockable characters from each game for $1.99 each
I'm planning to spend on DLC what I would have if I had bought it for DS ($30). I don't care at all about extra characters or most of the music from the early FF games (this would be a different story if they were the orchestral arrangements of the early game music, but it's the standard tracks from the 8 or 16-bit versions). This pricing allows me to get the songs I want from the games I want, rather than being stuck with a bunch of stuff I'll never play. Picked up the song bundles for FF 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, & 13 last night, along with a couple additional tracks from Tactics, Advent Children, and couple others.
IAP aside, I absolutely adore the gameplay and the overall aesthetics of this game. If you're not a fan of Uematsu you'll get nothing out of it, but for those of us who love his music, this is an absolutely brilliant package. The rhythm mechanics are unique and challenging, the RPG-lite elements are fun, and they did a superb job of capturing the feel of each game.
