So, say I picked up a Vita on Black Friday am getting a Vita from Santa.  It is bundled with a 4GB memory card.  Is 4GB adequate, or will I be wishing I had more memory?  How much should I be looking to get once the Christmas expenses have expired?

Nope. Yup.  icon_wink

Of course, it all depends on how much downloading you do.  I have a 32GB which it shows as a '29GB Capacity' card with ~6GB left on it. I have ~30 games downloaded, a mixture of Vita & PSP / PS1 games plus saves and installed data from 10 cartridge games.

yeah, 4 gig isn't that big anymore.  Fortunately there seem to be some fairly decent sales that bring the memory card prices down from insane to crazy.

yeah, keep your eyes open.  gamestop has done crazy good with the mem card sales this week.  first, they had 8gb for $10 on BF, then today, they had 16 for $20 and 32 for $40.  picked up a 32gb card myself.

32 is the minimum I would go. If you have PS+ you will fill up an 8 or 16 so fast it's not even funny. And if you have a Vita then you MUST have PS+. At least two games a month are available for the Vita through Plus.

Ick.  That makes me wish I'd had a little extra money in November.  I'll get by on the 4GB until January.  Now, though, I now that I need to plan for it.

Don't listen to him. 16 GB is enough as long as you don't expect to keep your entire game library installed at all times... after a while. You'll be fine for a good few months anyway.

Don't listen to him, if you're going to grab one it might as well be a 32GB so you don't have to worry about upgrading for a while smile

Except the 32 GB version is disproportionately expensive compared to the 16 GB card, giving it less value for money.

16GB $39.99, 32GB $79.99 for their regular prices.  double the price for double the space.  true, he could get a 16 and maybe the prices will drop if he decides he needs more space, but as small as these things are I'd say go with the big one that will never need to be taken out.  seriously, a cat could eat these things:

The issue is the extra $40.  I'll be lucky to pull off the first $40, and even that will have to wait until January.

Finally broke down and sold my Vita yesterday.  frown  It's such an awesome piece of hardware, but there is simply isn't a single game coming out over the next year that interests me.

While it is not the favorite portable system, so far I been enjoying the PS Vita.

I rent the games from Gamefly and I have PS Plus free games that I enjoy.

However, it is true that I still do not paid for new PS Vita and still don't have must get games.

I'm the type of person that likes their entire library pre-installed on the device. I was forced to import the 64GB card over Christmas. $92. But I agree that 16GB would be more than enough for most people, if they use the Vita strictly as a gaming device. That is easily enough to hold 8-10 titles, and even more if you are an indie gamer.

So, my wife now owns a slim Vita and I got the Borderlands 2 code. smile

The slim Vita is quite nice and the screen is pretty good. I still prefer the OLED screen, but the LCD screen on the slim is not bad at all.

As for Borderlands 2, it's awesome on the Vita. I was a little scared about how it would look, based on screenshots...but I am happy to report that it looks great on the Vitas screen. I can't tell the difference between the PS3 and vita versions do the game. The only thing you have to get used to is the controls which map things like melee to the back pad...which can mean there will be a lot of unintentional melee done by you when you are first starting out. After a little bit though you adjust and haven't had any problems since.

Man, the Vita is rocking for me this year. Lots of great games and remote play on the PS4 is fantastic.  icon_biggrin

How is it to hold? I have fairly large albeit thin hands (I'm 6'4"  icon_smile). Read some concerns about the new model maybe being harder to grip (though I suspect accessory makers will come out with some sort of grip add-on for the Slim model). Just wondering -- I haven't seen the new model in stores yet.

It is noticeably lighter and thinner than the first Vita....but I didn't have any problems holding it. I have rather large hands as well, and I didn't find it noticeably harder to hold. I actually liked the smaller back pad on the slim and the larger grips on the back. It felt good.

I picked up the Vita 2.0 to replace my broken 1.0. I love the feel of the 2.0 in my hands, it is noticeably thinner and lighter. The change in screen isn't that noticeable either. If you go straight from the 1.0 to the 2.0 you can see a difference, but the 2.0 is still a really good screen and newcomers to the Vita shouldn't be bothered by the screen at all. I did have to adjust the brightness scale upwards in the system settings though, once I did that it was close to the look of the 1.0. The one thing that feels much better to me are the analog sticks, not sure what's different about them, but they seem to stick to my thumb better than the 1.0 version does. The added battery life is nice too.

All in all the 2.0 is a good system if you don't already have the 1.0 or need to replace yours.

So.... Helldivers finally lured me into the current-version (2.0 I assume?) Vita pool.  icon_smile Just got the basic black one and a 16GB memory card to start.

Woah. When did memory cards become the size of my pinky nail? Cripes, I was afraid I'd sneeze, blow the memory card away and never find it again, or my cat would eat it. So I shoved it inside the Vita asap.  icon_smile

Nice screen. Relatively responsive touchscreen. While it's obviously wonderful to finally have two thumbsticks, I can't say my aim with the right one is super precise. Though maybe not much different then when I used the mushroom thumbsticks on a PS2 controller. Certainly having the thumbstick and touchscreen and touchpad (well, not crazy about Helldivers' touchpad usage) makes Vita games less button-combo problematic. I just wish PSP games would get "retrofitted" to make usage of all that nice stuff.

It's pretty thin and light, and could actually even fit it in my pants pocket, at the risk of "Hey, is that a Vita in your pocket or are ya just happy to see me?" comments.  Fabulous

While the Vita feels good in the hands, I do have long, spindly fingers and may get one of these add-on grip/trigger things. A bit tricky for me to pull off the strategem combos and back-swiping stuff for Helldivers. I don't know if an add-on grip would help with those or not.

I forgot Resogun came out on Vita late last year. I need to look that up.  icon_smile

I have Helldivers of course  The Weghted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you., and am trying the Unit 13 demo.

Any other suggestions? I realize my gaming tastes may be different but, a good game's a good game, right? Just remember that I have to abstain from FPS games due to worsening motion sickness issues in recent years.  icon_redface

I think resogun is free if you have ps plus. If you dont have plus get it. You will get a minimum of 2 free games a month.

The vita is great for RPGs if you're into them. Tales, Persona, FFX.

Just an FYI, I bought some joystick extenders from EBay and they are fantastic. You have to nudge the right stick a little to get to the X button, but they make longer sessions much more enjoyable.

Anyway, these are the ones I bought - http://www.ebay.com/itm/151482222350?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

If you can play 3rd person action games then I highly recommend Tearaway. It's a really enjoyable game, it's fun, the mood is light, and it actually puts the Vita's hardware abilities to good use.

Thanks, guys, will keep these in mind.  icon_smile While I'd like to try some sort of clip-on grips, the few I've read about so far seem to get decidedly mixed reviews (complaints about making triggers tougher to activate, or not clipping on securely etc.).

I'd like to get some sort of simple storage protection case. I don't think I need a screen protector, but would like a little case to put it in when not in use. So I'm examining some modest options for that. I guess I could see if it fits in my old PSP case.

Talking to myself again  High five! I've read about some gizmo that requires mailing in your Vita to have it cracked open and a USB port installed (probably not something I'm willing to do until my Vita's past the warranty period), which apparently makes it easier to use a 3rd party video capture utility connected to a PC. [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-ps-vita-video-output-mod-review]

Also about using an audio splitter to allow recording the audio on a PC via the audio-in connector (while the splitting allows a headphone jack so you can still hear while you play). This is to get smoother audio, and also not have the sounds of one's fingers clacking buttons etc. The idea being you can later use some sort of movie editing tools to synch the gameplay footage and separate audio recording of one's playthrough.

Other suggestion read was to pay a few bucks for one of the better quality iPhone video cam apps that allow manual focus and exposure and theoretically crisper footage that way (if not using direct video capture stuff).

None of this really qualifies as "easy" though. Too bad they didn't include a video out jack like on PSP. Not that I'd want to play my Vita on TV, just it would probably ease the video capture process for sharing footage. It just seems a shame that Sony made it so easy to share gameplay footage on PS4 ("share" button) and yet seemed to make it more difficult to pull off on Vita than it was on PSP.
=========
I think I might try the 3-month ($17.99) PlayStation Plus item and see how I feel about it in 3 months. I'm notoriously short attention spanned on handheld gaming devices -- though I can't see ever getting tired of Helldivers  icon_smile -- so it seems a little premature to commit to Plus for a year.

BJ, if you buy games digitally, the sales bump for PS+ is often enough to cover the cost of the sub.

Also, sorry in advance.  I was not able to get out to the P.O. this weekend.  I'll make a trip as soon as I can this week.

That's OK (thanks, per Unit 13). I suspect Helldivers and to a lesser extent Resogun will keep me entertained for a long time.  icon_smile

I picked up Killzone: Liberation in the Classics section. While still fun, its different controls vs. Helldivers (per absence of right thumbstick) makes it a bit of an adventure to switch between the games. As you're using a button to fire and trigger to crouch in K:L but trigger to fire in Helldivers.

While I was happy to see we can reconfigure the right thumbstick to use any controls that were available on PSP, I never really figured out a good use for the right thumbstick that way. Just makes me wish they'd update K:L or even create a new one expressly for Vita. I know that's not happening and Sony's probably more interested in transporting the console FPS Killzone experience to Vita instead.

Who knows? Maybe if Helldivers is a monster hit, Sony will want to bankroll a Killzone twin-stick co-op blaster of that ilk, too. I'd play it.  icon_smile

While I think I changed my mind about needing grips -- with practice, I'm comfortable with the Vita as is. No matter how many hours I play Helldivers (and it's damn near impossible to get myself to stop playing sometimes  icon_smile), my hands and fingers never seem to feel uncomfortable or cramped. The light weight is great that way, is one factor I think.

I do for some reason find that the touchscreen on the menus stops responding on occasion. Turning the Vita on/off fixes it. So far I've only noticed this happening when the Vita's plugged in; don't recall that ever happening when it's unplugged. I might research that to see if that suggests a defect or if it's just a common, occasional thing?

Anyone familiar with horizontal bullet hell blaster Soldner?

Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype Landing on PS Vita March 17th
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/03/16/soldner-x-2-final-prototype-landing-on-ps-vita-march-17th/
Quote
While some of you are eager to face the challenge, others might be worried that Söldner-X 2 is one of those insanely difficult bullet hell shooters. We love shmups and wanted to make the genre a little more accessible to new players.

Söldner-X 2 includes a unique feature we call the Play Rank System, which automatically adjusts the game’s difficulty level while you are playing. This even occurs mid-level so inexperienced players are likely to encounter less enemies, fewer bullets and take less damage. On the other hand, when your skills improve the game will become more challenging to match your ability and reward you with much higher scores.

Speaking of high scores, every run can be uploaded to our servers meaning that replay files from other players are available to be downloaded and played back on your PS Vita. That way instead of wondering “How did they get such a high score!?” you can now watch their run and find out.
Man, I wish they could rig up this replay files feature for Vita Helldivers some day -- probably not happening since Arrowhead's team is pretty small.

*It's cross-buy on PS3 and Vita only -- dev doesn't anticipate getting to do a PS4 version.

*I might check it out unless someone here says it's awful. Then I HAVE to check out since my game tastes are often so far off the beaten track.  icon_smile

Question on the Vita.. How's the integration with the PS4? Is it worth it as a second screen? Do you find you use it much, or is it like the old Xbox Glass with a lot of hype and not a lot of implementation?

Also if I'm buying used what's the best way to go -- first gen OLED or recent gen slim non-OLED screen?

As for the integration with the PS4 there aren't a lot of games that use it as a pure second screen (ie to display maps, inventory, etc.). BUT every single PS4 game can be played through the Vita's remote play feature. So if your tv is being used for something else you can always play your PS4 games through the Vita.

Also I have a post above about the Vita 2.0 vs Vita 1.0 up above and honestly both are good systems. I would say go with which ever one you can get a better deal on. 1.0 has a slightly better screen, but 2.0 has a much longer battery life and it is lighter so it feels better in your hands.
