I'm sold.  I hope Sony is really smart and price this at the same price or (please God) lower.

IN!
IN DAY ONE!

I like the design, and thank God the dual analog sticks are there. At 182mm this thing isn't exactly pocket sized. I was hoping for a PSPgo size, but this thing is gargantuan in comparison.

<edit> Looks like PSP games are compatible! From the Playstation Blog: NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store.

I'm just wondering how they will look on a screen that is significantly higher in resolution.

Given Sony's past pricing history, I don't see this happening.  I can't see it being less than $300 and I wouldn't be surprised to see it reach $350 or more.

$200 is the sweet spot for me. Knowing Sony they'll put it at $300. Realistically, $250, same price as the 3DS will also work, or it will drop to $250 within the first year.

The 3DS' cost is likely from the screen, so Sony can save a lot of money using tech and parts that are all pretty much standard now (touch screens, touchpads, OLED screens, etc). So going on price parity with the 3DS will be great.

There's nothing standard about the OLED screens yet. From what I hear, they aren't produced at anywhere near the rate they'll have to be. Hell, there's barely enough produced for the few cell phones that use them.

They really should have worked out a way to get L2/R2 on there so they could easily port PS2 games to it (although I'm guessing it doesn't have L3/R3 either).

EDIT: I guess they can use the touch screen for some of that? I'm not quite clear on how it can be used.

Little Deviants
Reality Fighters

plus games based on the following PlayStation franchises:
Uncharted
Killzone
WipeOut
Resistance
LittleBigPlanet
Hustle Kings
Hot Shots Golf

Meh, not a one of them interests me in the least.  On the bright side, it saves me from having to buy one until after a price drop or two, or until they release the first good RPG or SRPG...whichever comes first.  smile

I would bet the farm that Square will release FFX and 12 on the PSN and you know Atlus will support the hell out of it. So problem solved.

Glad there are 2 analog sticks but wish they were concave designs. Price will be very interesting for this. I don't think it can be any more than $250 in the US at least. The PSP hasn't been as popular here and I don't see people buying it if the think costs as much as a full PS3, especially with the continued rising popularity of smart phones.

It'll depend on price, and how bulky it feels for me. But really if the price isn't too crazy I'll likely be in. Sony's not known for their low prices though...

Video / sound out would be nice. You could play kicked back as if it were a console in your living room and then take it on the go. It would be awesome to be able to play PS3 class (roughly) as one usually would or anywhere.

Is there really a market for something like this in a world with a 3DS and everyone has a smartphone?

Seems like the "willing to buy a $300 portable and pay $50 for games for it" niche is getting pretty small these days.

For me there is --  The iphone games I've played have primarily been mindless flash-game adaptations.     The games that have an ounce of potential for the iphone or android on a multiplayer level seem to always turn out being advertisements for themselves.

Build an army!!!   OH... you have to get 25 friends to play in order to build anything other than a basic infantry.     Ok now purchase GUNS for your infantry through the in-app purchase!     Oh... and BTW now you can't play again until tomorrow unless you use an in-app purchase to get some MOJO so that you can have more turns!

Guess it's time to switch over to one of the 1000 clones of either angry birds, or manipulate the ball to go into the hole.

It's listed at $999 though!   I've never done this before, but if I preorder it now:

1.  will my card be charged, and
2. will it be for $999 and
3.   how am I sure they won't scam me for $999?   Tongue

I agree, that for the most part, smartphone games are not "real" games like AAA DS or PSP games. But the question is: given that the phone is already in your pocket, and the games are cheap, are they sufficient?

I can't see picking one of these up. Maybe a 3DS just for the novelty of glasses free 3D, when the prices drop.

Also, on a complete derail, here's a list of some good iPhone games that are not Catapult clones:
Strategy/board/card games:
Carcasonne
Labyrinth
Neuroshima Hex
The Necronomicon Horror
Highborn
Slay
Riese

RPGs:
100 Rogues
Rimelands: Hammer of Thor
Aralon HD
Ash

Puzzle:
Trainyard
Chono S Gear

Other:
Pinball HD
Namco Pool Pro Online 3
Reckless Racing
iAssociate 2

Buying every single one of those games will cost you less than 1 DS game. Maybe less than 2 DS games, I don't recall all the prices.

[ps. I consider the ipod touch a smartphone.. even though it's missing the phone part, it is functionally identical otherwise.]

Couple points to yours Bob -- based on my opinion only of course:

1.  The iphone controls suck
2.  The iphone controls suck
3.  COD, God of War, Little Big Planet, and Uncharted on the go with graphics that are close to PS3 quality?   YES PLEASE!

And I have to say that a decade ago when I got my PSP -- I was totally BLOWN AWAY.     I suspect I will be blown away again this time...and with dual sticks too which seals the deal.

I honestly don't think it can.  There has yet to be a game with a virtual pad on iOS that I have played that I felt comfortable with.  Can I play the game?  Sure.  Do I always feel like I am fumbling?  Yes.

Dead Space HD looks okay. To be honest it looks good "for an iphone/pad game," but not for any dedicated gamers. Just one look at the stuff shown for the 3DS and now the NGS shows what dedicated gaming platforms can do.

I'd rather not play with terrible controls than dealing with them. Plenty of games out there that need attention. I'll play all my excellent casual games on my ipad touch when I really need to kill a few minutes, but otherwise when I want to game

Also, every single one of the games Bob listed will likely be ported to the NGP, assuming they'll properly push for a bigger marketplace. Those that are ported, will all benefit from proper gaming controls. But, at the same time, they will all compare harshly to well made full on gaming experiences when they make that transition, only price will save the ones that aren't very casual oriented.

I'm already planning to buy it, there's games I missed on the PSP that I'll just buy digitally (if it's on sale, ever).

Try Dead Space.  It works pretty darn well - not as good as real sticks but pretty great for the limitations.  So people are developing new ways to deal with the issues.

No disagreement there. The games I listed are all made for touchscreen controls. I don't bother playing twitchy dual joystick shooters on it (much.)

I'm not saying that the PSP2 isn't awesome.  I'm just wondering how well it will sell for Sony.  My prediction: not that well. There will be no PSP3. (I may be underestimating Sony's persistence.)
