Not news exactly but this week's sales are especially terrible. Man I wonder what Sony is going to do. I would love for a 10,000 price drop like Nintendo pulled. Heck if they dropped the price to 20,000 then I would get one in an instant. Does Sony have a highly anticipated upcoming game that would get the Japanese to buy it?

I was more struck by the fact that PS2 out sells the 360. Ouch.

360 sucks in Japan too. They don't know what's good for them!

Yeah, the 360 has always been a huge disaster in Japan. As for the Vita, I have no clue why they didn't release the Vita in the USA first....in time for Christmas. It would have sold way more than in Japan.

I disagree with Christmas launch - in that mayhem, products often get lost. Being a major mfgr releasing a product mid-winter gets them a place to get multiple titles out with little competition.

Aside from the hardware itself and marketing, it really depends on two things: product lineup and availability. If you have a strong lineup (and I think the Vita launch lineup is strong) and good marketing, there should be plenty of demand before the launch. It doesn't get lost in the lineup because it is the thing everybody wants for Christmas. But you have to have availability too or you get 360 debacle of '05.

Well, the 3DS started out slow too, but Nintendo realized why (the price) and fixed it and now it's a hit. Will Sony be willing to do the same?

Well, price and lack of games. They fixed both, it seems. I haven't looked at the numbers lately, but is it a hit?

The 3DS is doing quite well in Japan, I believe, largely on the strength of the Mario titles. Well, the 3DS started out slow too, but Nintendo realized why (the price) and fixed it and now it's a hit. Will Sony be willing to do the same?

There were three catalysts in the 3DS turnaround: 3DS price drop, Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7.
What are Sony's best first-party performers in Japan?

Yeah, I'd say that the two Mario games are far and away the best (only??) things on the 3ds right now. Resident Evil Revelations seems like it's alright...but to be honest, I'm kind of sick of RE at the moment and RE 6 will be out later this year, so I don't have much of a desire to play it. I have a 3ds, but to be honest I hardly touch it. The 3d thing has lost its "WOW" factor long ago and now it's just here to play Virtual Console games on....oh and my wife enjoys playing the Lego games on it!

Moster Hunter. Oh, sorry, you said third party. In that case, Monster Hunter.
