The PS Vita Has Seen Better Weeks. Now, It Looks Kind of Screwed.

You know things are bad when your old portable is beating your brand new one. This week, Sony's PS Vita sold only 8,931. The PSP sold 14,804 units. The good news, I guess, is that Sony makes both handhelds. The bad? The newly released PS Vita continues to nosedive in Japan. This week it sold less than 10,000.

That's worrying! In comparison, the 3DS moved 72,115 units—not bad for a console that people thought was D.O.A. last year.

Rolling out new hardware is incredibly difficult. The PS Vita, like the 3DS, is an impressive piece of hardware. The 3DS finally has a nice line-up of games to keep players happy—and to entice new 3DS owners. These are growing pains, for sure, and the games are slowly trickling out. But Sony better turn things around, before the rot starts to set in.

like they say though, the 3DS was considered DOA during this time in its lifespan.  still, in my case the March 9th event was a bust (hell, I didn't even remember it until I re-read this thread and Googled it) and I'm glad I didn't make an impulse buy at launch.

Hopefully there are enough North American sales to sustain things for at least a little while. I figure I'll get my money's worth out of this thing if there's at least one good NHL game plus The Show for a year or two (what can I say, I like those two franchises a lot?). Getting some other good games will be a plus.

But at this rate, I'm not sure anyone's going to bother to put out a hockey game...

Actually, things are going quite a bit better in North America according to the newest NPD. It sold over 200k last month, just behind the 3DS....which is about $100 cheaper. It's also selling better than the 3DS did in it's second month. It's funny that people over at NeoGaf were all prepared for bloodbath numbers in the latest NPD and then it ended up selling way better than they thought. Just take a look at the thread for some good laughs. It may be dead in the water in Japan...but it's got a long life ahead of itself over here. smile

Glad to hear.

On a side note, how does anyone follow NeoGAF threads? They move so fast...
