I've been trying to capture the final legendaries in Pokemon SoulSilver before X and Y come out.  The trouble is that the last couple, like Groudon, require me to defeat Ash Ketchum at the summit of Mount Silver.  His pokemon have more than twenty levels on any of mine -- the last time I faced him, Pikachu single-handedly annihilated my entire team.

I'm on Mewtwo's trail now.  He hates Ash and Pikachu even worse than Misty, so with him on my side, I might just have a chance.

By the way, here's a link to the Official Pokemon Bank / PokeTransfer FAQ if anyone's planning to transfer their collections forward to X / Y.

For example:

Quote

Q: What are the details of the trial period for Pokémon Bank?

A: If you download and open Pokémon Bank by January 31, 2014, you will be able to obtain a pass that will allow you to use the software for no charge for 30 days.

Before February 1, 2014, you will need to:
1. Download Pokémon Bank from the Nintendo eShop.
2. Open Pokémon Bank.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to obtain your pass.

This pass unlocks a 30-day trial period. During this time, you will be able to use all of the features in both Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter without charge.

If you download Pokémon Bank but do not open the software and obtain your pass by the end of January 31, 2014 (Friday), you will not be able to obtain the pass. Please be sure to take advantage of this opportunity while it lasts.

Jesus, they added a subscription scheme to the series?! It's not enough of a subscription that we keep on willingly buying the same game year after year?

It is optional and it is $4.99 per year.

I think while free is better, the pokemon bank is a good idea and good thing since in the future it is likely that you'll be able to use pokemon bank to transfer to newer pokemon games. It makes things much easier for hardcore pokemon gamers that like to transfer their exclusive pokemon to newer games. Instead of having to do thing like transfer from game A to newer game B then from B to newer game C then from C to D, etc. In the future, we just transfer the exclusive pokemon to the bank and from there to the newest pokemon game.

I have 4 copies on preorder.

My wife and two kids all play.    It's expensive when a new version comes out.

The online bank will also allegedly help eliminate Faux-kemon from the trade pool.  I don't know how Nintendo plans to root out Shaymin or Darkrai that were obtained by holepunching, but if it seals out the infinite tide of Pokedited forgeries, I'll gladly pitch in my $5 a year.

I've missed out on some legendary pokemon over the years.  It sucks.  But speaking as someone who has invested a lot of time and effort into breeding *legitimate* tournament-grade pokemon for the last couple generations, seeing eugenicists hack a full Pokedex of genetically perfect, slavishly obedient shinies into their games with a few keystrokes and then selling them off makes my blood boil.

But that may be a debate for a different thread.  Is everyone settled on whether they're going with X or Y?  I'm feel like more people are going with X because of the fairy legendary, so I've been planning to stick with Y for the increased trading opportunities.

so, probably asked this before, but with the new look of these games (in 3D!) I may grab one to dabble with.  Are X & Y going to be the same game, just with different Pokemon (in 3D!), or are they two separate stories (in 3D!)?

[edit] ps.  anyone here check out Pokemon Generations on the PC?

Pokemon X and Y are fundamentally the same game with a few exclusive pokemon in each game, distinct legendary mascots, and different mega-evolutionary forms.  I don't think there's a comprehensive list of the differences yet, but you can see the different Mega MewTwo and Mega Charizard forms if they'll sway your preference.

In terms of canon, X is presumed to take place in the slightly lighter universe of LeafGreen, Sapphire, Pearl, HeartGold, White and White 2.  Pokemon Y is set in the darker reality of FireRed, Ruby, Diamond, SoulSilver, Black, and Black 2.

Nintendo has acknowledged the bug and they're working on a patch.  For now, as long as you don't save while you're in Lumiose City, you should be fine.

So wow...   this game is really good.    It completely stalled my GTA V play time because I've been focusing on it.

High points:

1.   The graphics are awesome.    This was probably obvious though
2.   The online stuff is really really good.    I mean I can challenge friends to battles, CHAT with them via VOICE chat.    I can trade with them.   I can do a blind trade (I've already managed to snag a couple Japanese Pokemon doing this).    I can go out there and search for a pokemon I want and try to trade for it.     The online integration in this game is outstanding and finally lives up to the potential for the 3DS.

3.   I like the new set of Pokemon.    Lots of good ones.

Can anyone comment on the post-game?    I'm on gym badge #7 and so I'm rapidly approaching the Victory road portion of the game.     Is there plenty left to do afterwards?

The one thing I don't like about online is having to manually launch it and also once you launch it, if you close the lid for a second, it knocks you off and you manually have to get back on.  Would like it if there were an option to keep it on and have it work like AC where when you close and open, it gets you back on.  I have you on my Friends list and I've never seen you on, but that is most likely caused by the fact that I always forget to get back on the online portion.

Actually, now that I give it more thought, I think the 3DS can't do Internet and local at the same time.  So, if they always had Internet turned on, you wouldn't be able to see if there were other people playing around you.  So I guess I get the technical reasons for it.

In the really cool department:

I found an NPC that gives the history of any of your Pokemon.    It says things like 'Nomad (my char name) met me on a beach, threw a pokeball,...."  etc etc.

The really cool thing is that NPC tells you the history of Pokemon you traded for - both direct trades and wonder trades.    So I have a bit of history on what the trainers' names were from the wonder trade pokemon I receive.

The patch that fixes the save game bug is available now.  Just go to the eShop and it will tell you that there's an update available.

This game is fantastic.    My only beef, and it's a BIG one:

It's easy as hell.   I mean I've blazed through the game to the final gym.   I don't think I died once.   From what I've read there's not a whole lot to do after you beat the league.

Remember HeartGold and SoulSilver where suddenly there was another entire set of gyms after you beat the first set and the pokemon league?     I fondly remember that.   TONS to do.    The graphics and online capabilities of this one just makes me YEARN for the type of depth and stuff to do that was in those two titles.

So, I finished the game.    This one was far easier than any Pokemon game I've ever played.   The interface, graphics, integrated online, and personality of the game was absolutely the best of the series.

The story, length, and difficulty were the worst of the series.    Post game also doesn't have a lot of meat to it from what I've read.

That being said, I'm trying to breed some shiny Pokemon.    I've never done this before but boy is it a grind.   Apparently in Black 2 and White 2 if you completed your Pokedex you were given a 'shining charm' that increased the percentage chance of a shiny.    Nobody has discovered such an item yet in this game.     I'm using a US ditto with a Japanese pokemon to try to breed a shiny.

I know cross breeding Pokemon from different countries increases the odds.   Does anyone know if that holds true if one of the participants is a ditto?

I just picked up the game over the weekend (finally) and I'm really digging it so far.  Bummer to hear about the lackluster endgame, though.  I love the new animated sprites, and I'd love to spend as much time with this title as I typically have with the previous ones.

I was also thrilled to get to the point where ***ONE HOUR IN SPOILER WARNING, I GUESS*** you get your second starter pokemon.  None of the new starters really jumped out at me, and Bulbasaur has been my favorite little guy since the beginning of the franchise.

Question: at what point can I start pulling in all my Pokemon from Black/White?  Do I have to wait until beating the game as usual?

From what I can tell, you have to wait until Nintendo's cloud Pokemon storage thing in December.

Disclaimer about the end game:   I haven't personally been going through it yet, so my report was only based on forum chatter.    Could be completely wrong, or it might not be as thin as being talked about.

Thank for that link Grue!

I had no idea that the beloved Pokeradar had made a triumphant return in this game.    This excites me and makes the post game way better.    I spent a good part of the day yesterday trying to get a chain of 40 going.   Last night around 10:30pm I managed to hit 40 and then chained it until finally a shiney Frofrou popped.

So now I have a designer dog I guess.  biggrin

I will crank up efforts to get another chain to 40 today.
