IPad Repair?

My 8-year-old wasn't careful enough and now there is a crack along one side of my iPad.     My heart is torn because she feels awful and is avoiding me.  I forgive her.  The hurt of the broken iPad along with the hurt she feels is making it a rough day.

It still works, although I can feel the roughness along the cracks.  I did some googling to figure out how much it would be to repair.  Doesn't look good at this point.  I see that many people were able to exchange them in the past at an Apple store, but they don't seem to do that anymore.  Other places are claiming $400+ to repair.

Anyone with experience in this?  Is it likely that I could just live with it?

If it costs $400+ to repair I think I'd live with it.  And then eventually sell it for parts and but a new one.

Tell her it is ok, because now you have an excuse to buy a new one when the 3 is announced in March.

Have you asked Apple for replacement cost?

It just happened.  I'm not near an Apple store right now, maybe I'll drive up to the Twin Cities some weekend to see how much.

is the crack in the plastic? If repair is out the question then I would maybe JB Weld it in order to prevent it from cracking further.

I found Apple to be extremely helpful when it came to my iPhone. (of course, this is while it was still within warranty).

Can you post a photo of where the crack is? (insert tasteless joke HERE). On the iPad...

I'd guess anyone claiming it's a $399 fix is trying to convince you get a new iPad 2, and I'd assume Apple would probably prefer that.   Or else if you've got a crack that's running across both the case and glass, maybe they're quoting replacement of both.

If you're going to let kids play with it, I'd definitely invest in a true hard case that can survive an occasional drop. Heck if I ever get one, I'll get a case like that cause I'm a clumsy oaf in general.

It would be really difficult to get a good picture since it isn't all that noticeable.  In fact I used it for a while afterwards without noticing. 

The crack is mostly in the bottom corner and then goes along the short edge by the camera about 1/2 cm into the viewable area.

Perhaps a screen protector would be a good idea to kinda hold things together and keep the crack from spreading?
