I just bought a shiny new iPad Mini Retina after being away from the iOS world for a couple of years. I'm looking for some fun game to add to it. So far I've got Hearthstone, Fairway Solitaire, Bastion, PvZ 2, and Kingdom Rush 2. I know we have an iOS game thread but it's huge and spans years and I was hoping for some quick hits to get me in the swing of things. I am going through that thread too though to get ideas.

However, if I were to ask you what your top 3 iOS games at the moment are, what would they be?

On the Ipad, for a newer game I really like Hitman Go.   Also, Pinball Arcade is great on it, as the aspect ratio works very well for the game.

A couple recommendations off the top of my head:

-  If you like pinball at all, try either Pinball Arcade (for re-creations of actual pinball tables) or Zen Pinball (for crazy tables using licensed properties like Star Wars, Marvel, etc.).  At last count, I've put over 150 hours into Zen Pinball, and that's only going to increase with the release of 4 new Star Wars tables tomorrow.   thumbsup

-  Final Fantasy Tactics:  War of the Lions HD is a brilliant port of the PS1/PSP game (I think it's the best version of all the platforms).  The recent port of FF 6 is also very well done.

-  The port of Star Wars:  Knights of The Old Republic is suberb.

-  Nimble Quest is a blast.  it's the old "Snake" game from mid-90's cell phones, combined with an RPG.

-  Lords of Waterdeep is a perfect port of the board game.

-  There are tons of CCG games available.  Hearthstone, Ascension, Magic, Dominions, etc.

-  Threes is one of the best casual games available.

-  Oceanhorn is a Zelda clone that got excellent reviews.

-  Bloodmasque is an Infinity Blade-esque fighter that is far more fun than it has any right to be.  One of my favorite iOS titles from last year.  While not really my thing, Infinity Blade 2 is certainly worth a look.

Touch Arcade has a Top Reviews page where you can filter through the best reviewed games.  I find them to be the best iOS review site, although I do think they tend to score a bit high.

You want to get FTL and Monument Valley.  I'll throw in rymdkapsel as my #3

Then think about Junk Jack X, The Room 1 & 2, Warhammer Quest, Eclipse, Badland, Hundreds, Battle of the Bulge, 10000000, Tiny Wings, Tilt to Live, Puzzle Craft, Colossatron, Ascension, Sword & Sworcery, Neuroshima Hex, Ninja Fishing, Sword & Poker, Deemo, Ghost Trick, and Eclipse.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, so if there's any specific genres you like then there are plenty more recommendations where those came from.

Get FTL.  You will be happy for a long time.

Then get Clash of Heroes, Warhammer Quest, Bastion and Bard's Tale.  All your RPG needs shall be satisfied.

The only games I play daily and have for months, and months are Nimble Quest, and Jetpack Joyride. The latter is an endless runner that us quite well done with tons of collectables. NQ's arena keeps me coming back trying to finish in the top ten in Touch Arcade's guild. Fun little game, really wish they would do a sequel.

There are SO many good games on IOS now, that it is very difficult to drive it down to three. What's even better is that most games have such a small footprint that you can easily fit your entire collection the ipad. I have the 128GB model, 41 games installed, and I still have 71GB open.

How about if I go by category?  slywink

Strategy:
Neuroshima Hex (especially once you add the in-game purchases)
Skulls of the Shogun
Battle of the Bulge

Strategy (Card Based):
Hearthstone
Summoner Wars
Ascension

RPG:
Baldur's Gate Series
Shadow Sun
Knights of the Old Republic

Action:
Infinity Blade series
Dead Space
Deus Ex: The Fall

Adventure:
Oceanhorn
Waking Mars
Horn

Other great Odds and Ends:
Amber Route
King of Dragon Pass
Rebuild
Hitman Go
Waterdeep
Agricola
Faster than Light
Gemini Rue
Art of War
New World Colony
Republique
Empire
Warhammer Quest

Everything on Dante Rising's list is good.  He did a nice job of breaking it down by genre.

My recent top timesinks are: Hearthstone and Baldur's Gate

Hearthstone (iPad) is so good it makes me want to play WoW again...which is insane.
