Well, I picked up Unit 13 (no thanks to TRU)*.

I have to say, this game is kind of great.  First of all, I've wanted to try a 3PS or FPS on the Vita since getting it.  The dual sticks just scream for it.  Unit 13 scratches that itch, but in a way designed specifically for a portable console.  There's no story mode here, which normally is a negative for me, but what you get instead is pretty cool.  There's a grid of missions available.  As you complete one, the others surrounding it open up.  They're numbered, so you might try to go in order.  However, mission 4 is an elite mission, so you may find you want to explore some others before coming back to it.

Each mission is different in objectives, requirements, even rules.  For example, one mission has you stealthily sneaking in to recover some papers.  If the alarm goes off, the mission is over.  You can get detected, but you'll have to take the guard out before he hits the alarm button.  Another mission requires you to pull off multiple objectives (disable a jet engine, steal the plane specs and a planned mission route), but lets you pull them off however you see fit.  Another is a timed run and gun.  You must clear out a restaurant and reach the checkpoint before the clock runs out, then plant a group of bombs in a warehouse before exfiltrating.  The elite mission I mentioned is a pair of assassinations, but there are no checkpoints, and your health is limited.

When you choose a mission, you see and hear what the objectives are, but you also get an indication of the difficulty level and, critically, the relative length of the mission.  It's this kind of thing that shows a lot of thought went into making this perfect for portable play.  Even the multiple objective mission, which was listed as a Long, only took about 15 minutes to complete (though I did have to restart a couple of times, so it may have been longer), IIRC.

Additionally, it's all about scoring.  You get points for many things.  Kills, obviously.  But also stealth streaks, silent kills, headshots, headshot streaks.  And of course it's all ranked.  And the missions are so short, you'll invariably say, "I can do better" and try to outdo your buddy.

I haven't even talked about the controls, which are simple and effective.  Or the graphics, which, while not spectacular, are better than you might expect.

I had an issue with sound in the demo (and a subsequent hard lock of my Vita).  The problem persisited with the full game the first time I played it.  After a reboot of the Vita, everything seems fine now.

Anyway, the reviews have been decent for this one, but I think more thought went into its design than they may have realized.  It's a lot of fun.

*I did use a $10 Off certificate at Gamestop, so it doesn't hurt too much.

It has happened to me a few times with the digital version.  Pretty annoying when it happens.  They do seem to be aware of the issue, but are saying it can happen with any game, but for some reason happens more with Unit 13.  I can safely say I have had it happen with no other game (and I have lots of games) than Unit 13.  Game is fun, though.
