Someone's remade the classic Mac 4X game.  A little pricey at $4.99 but it hits the right spot for people nostalgic for the old school feel of the game.  The interface could use a little improvement but overall it's got that same addictive feel from the original classic, plus all the variation in starting conditions.  For those of you not familiar, this is a really streamlined 4X game, possibly too simple for some peoples' tastes.  Definitely not for graphics or complexity whores.

I played a lot of this game back in the early 90s.  Loved it back then, but on reflection, a lot was missing.  For instance, I don't remember an option to upgrade your fleets and I'm pretty sure that you had to scarp your obsolete ships for their resources to build new ones.

I did love that all of the planets wore cowboy hats though.

You are correct about all of that - and on Easter they had easter shell hats lol!

You never can tell what games are going to suck you in but this one has me again, not just for the nostalgia (the simple sound effects are terribly addictive).  There's just something intangible I can't put my finger on (well in this case I can) that compels me to keep playing just a little more.  I also love that it's so simple that I can play for a few seconds or a few hours.  If I showed you a screenshot you'd probably think I was bonkers as it just does not look impressive at all, and the UI could use a little refinement on top of that.  But somehow it just plays really well, particularly once the AI shows up and you start fighting more.
