Pocket Tactics is reporting
that Spiderweb Software has pulled their iPad games and will stop supporting it. This is the company (guy?) that makes the Avernum games as well as various other similar RPGs. I guess 8.3 broke all his games on the iPad and he can't be bothered to fix it. He also cites problems getting noticed, spending too much on advertising, and just being sick of Apple.
I get the sick of Apple thing. I listen to some Apple podcasts, and the complaints about Apple's weird policy changes and rejections are common. It also seems they will break things with iOS updates. I also get that it must be very hard to get noticed on the App Store. There is so much out there and almost everything seems to be F2P now, in fact it seems almost expected at this point. There isn't much demand for premium games it seems.
On the other hand, if you make really good games they will get word of mouth and sell. At the same time though, people seem to expect a much higher graphic/sound level in games today and that is something that Spiderweb has failed to do. The games' interfaces and graphics have barely changed over the years. While not necessarily a bad thing, I know I would have loved to see an update. I have tried many many times to get into the company's games but always end up bored after a couple of hours. It never helps that I find the interface just a hassle to use.
Still, it's sad that the iPad lost a big name in classic RPGs. I have all but given up on gaming on iOS at this point. If something gets a lot of hype, like Alto's Adventure, I will pick it up, otherwise I don't even look anymore.
