[iOS] Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective

This came out of left field.  An iOS port of the amazing Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective game from the 80's.  I bought everything in that series and still remember it as a high point in solitaire gaming from those days.

Edit:  it seems this is actually a port of the PC game with FMV that was adopted from the board game I mention above.  Still fine by me, though.

I have three of the original board games (well, close enough to board games anyway) at home, but haven't tried all the cases. Only once did I actually solve a case completely (it was immensely satisfying to explain the exact series of events leading up to the case to the other players, when they hadn't figured it out themselves). Most of the time I just figure out parts of it and aren't really sure about those parts either. It's a very difficult game. I've even seen a player end up with a negative score, unable to answer even a single of the questions the game asked him. I've never seen anyone beat Sherlock Holmes himself, though there have been times when someone has gotten close, mostly by jumping to conclusions early in the case and earning bonus points for speed.

Having the game as an FMV adventure doesn't really strike me as necessary though. Sherlock Holmes is a literary hero, and having these adventures take place on paper feels more "right" than having to watch uneven acting on the screen.

I had the CD-Rom versions of all three volumes, and the acting wasn't all that bad, actually. They had that Jeremy Brett look going for it.

Yeah, me, too.  Played the hell out of that one.

Never got into the Consulting Detective boardgame (I never picked it up, either.  IIRC, it was expensive), but I did really love these CD-ROMs.
