Quote
An unannounced iOS port of the 3DS music game Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has shown up on New Zealand's iOS App Store, which usually portends a worldwide release throughout the day.

The iOS game adds a "Quest Medley" mode, which puts you through a random pairing of "field" and "battle" levels, different each time you play. It also adds some kind of composition mode, along with the ability to share creations via Twitter.

Unlike the 3DS version, the iOS release is free to download. As reported by NeoGAF users, it comes with just two songs, with the rest purchased as in-app bundles. Even additional characters are sold via IAP. In fact, user Goli notes that, when the NZ release of the game is opened in a US account, the prices for in-app purchases show up in US denominations ... and add up to around $150.

In any case, Theatrhythm is worth a try if you have even the slightest appreciation for Final Fantasy music. The 3DS version retails for $30.

Sweet!  This also removes one of my biggest reasons for wanting a 3DS.

Yeah but the do seem to be killing users on the IAP.  To get everything the 3DS version has for $30 you would need to spend $150 in IAP.  At least that is how the article read to me.

Absolutely thrilled this is showing up on iOS, but that pricing is just insane.

Yeah. Squenix is fucking insane when it comes to pricing things on the iOS store. Absolutely fucking insane. They have no idea what they're doing.

I could've sworn I saw a statement from them that they were going to rethink their pricing strategy due to feedback.  Only the statement went on to reveal that they had no idea what they were talking about, and they basically said they loved the idea of free purchases with insane DLC pricing.  Oh hey, like this game.

At least the base game is free. Demon's Score has a similar structure where there was loads of IAP, except that the base game was sold for 7 dollars (currently on sale for a buck actually, though from what I've heard, it isn't worth even that).

Squeenix realizes that (assuming this pricing is accurate), I could buy a 3DS system + Theatrhythm for almost what they're charging for just the game?

Picked this up last night.  The IAP pricing is crazy at first glance, but I think this iOS version may be a more cost-effective way than the 3DS to get just the songs I want and skip the ones I don't.  The IAP breaks down like this:

-  Each numbered FF game has a "bundle" of 4 songs for $2.99 each
-  You can buy a selection of individual tracks from each game (including Tactics, X-2, Advent Children, and others) for $.99 each.  My understanding is that the 3DS version did the same thing.
-  Unclockable characters from each game for $1.99 each

I'm planning to spend on DLC what I would have if I had bought it for DS ($30).  I don't care at all about extra characters or most of the music from the early FF games (this would be a different story if they were the orchestral arrangements of the early game music, but it's the standard tracks from the 8 or 16-bit versions).  This pricing allows me to get the songs I want from the games I want, rather than being stuck with a bunch of stuff I'll never play.  Picked up the song bundles for FF 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, & 13 last night, along with a couple additional tracks from Tactics, Advent Children, and couple others.

IAP aside, I absolutely adore the gameplay and the overall aesthetics of this game.  If you're not a fan of Uematsu you'll get nothing out of it, but for those of us who love his music, this is an absolutely brilliant package.  The rhythm mechanics are unique and challenging, the RPG-lite elements are fun, and they did a superb job of capturing the feel of each game.

True dat...there are some real head-scratchers in there.  Only one song from FF Tactics and nothing from either Tactics Advance game?   saywhat
