Why do liberals love Ron Paul? That's the pressing question of the moment, since everywhere I turn lately a liberal is praising the Republican presidential candidate, obviously a conservative.

There's the well-known affection that liberal commentator Jon Stewart has for Paul, a Texas House member trending in high-single digits according to the latest polls on the Republican presidential race. Stewart first began talking of Paul more than one month ago, after the Texan finished second to Michele Bachmann in the Iowa straw poll yet the mainstream media virtually ignored the accomplishment.

Texas Governor Rick Perry Rick didn't participate in the Ir owa caucus. Instead, he was announcing his official bid for the Republican party's presidential nomination that same day in South Carolina, and the media focus went there instead -- something Stewart was quick to note.

"How did libertarian Ron Paul become the 13th floor in a hotel?" said Stewart, on the "Daily Show" after the media snub.

Now, Stewart is at it again, offering affection for Paul on his "Daily Show" after this week's Republican candidate presidential debate. While Stewart didn't go as far as endorsing Paul, for obvious reasons, he did give the Texas Congressman a significant tip of the hat for ideas Paul brought out during the debate.

Could it be because he stands apart from every other war thirsty candidate running on the republican ticket?

Obama promised to bring the troops home if he became president (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_RWHiC7K3k&NR=1) and obviously did a complete 180. Given Paul's record, I'd say he could actually be believed on actually doing it when everyone else just talks about it while our deficit continues to get higher and higher every single day.

From the article:

Crazy, of course, means "Republican."

Why no, mr. article-man. Crazy means crazy. As in "even most Republicans think he's crazy."

A Pew Research Center poll found nearly half of Americans hold the false belief that TARP was passed under President Obama, while only 34 percent know it originated under Bush.

Obama ran on withdrawing troops from Iraq, and he has withdrawn our combat forces from Iraq, and on doubling down in Afghanistan, which he also has done.

As for Ron Paul, he's a racist, woman-hating, privacy-hating, faux libertarian right-wing radical.

But does he support Obamacare?  Folks can forgive you if you show up to a Klan meeting with a noose and a blowtorch...but the minute you support health insurance for all or gay marriage?  hoo boy.

So you think of him exactly the same as you do every single other republican or conservative?    Nothing new there, we know you hate every single conservative and republican.

Nope. Very, very few Republicans are racist. George W. Bush certainly isn't a racist. As far as I can tell, none of the major contenders for the Republican nomination are racists, even Perry (though he plays footsie with racists in Texas). But Ron Paul is.

Also, very few Republican politicians pretend to be libertarians, but Ron Paul does. More day to day Republicans pretend to be libertarians when they're actually not, but that's neither here nor there.

Nonsense. There are plenty of Republicans I greatly admire, including the first President Bush, whose willingness to raise taxes in 1990 was one of the key reasons we balanced the budget at the end of that decade. There is even a Republican nominee for president whom, though I disagree with him on virtually every political issue, I wouldn't see as an existential danger in the White House, even if he would appoint terrible judges (he's polling at around 1%, of course).

I'm also not about to start hating my parents, my aunt, or the vast majority of my friends from high school, just because they're Republicans.

And while I have no respect for American conservatism as a political philosophy, and actively detest the Tea Party fringe movement (which, unlike mainstream Republicanism, does have deep strains of racism running through it), I have little problem with European conservatism. Were I British, I'd likely be a Tory.

I never get why some people have to pull the race card so much when you can't put up good arguments against the other side.

Since Ron Paul is racist, ready the pitch forks! We march on to his Texas district where they keep voting him in term after term after term, because they must all be racists to! And then on to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, his must be an anti-Semite for talking highly of Ron Paul!
Then on to CNN where they hosted Ron Paul, because no mainstream TV news program gives that kind of air to a known racist to spew their views.. only CNN! On we march to get the truth out about Ron Paul and his racism. We don't quite know who he's racist against, but it doesn't matter, think I read it somewhere on the internet on an opinion piece that he was racist, so it must be true.

On last night's Tea Party Republican debate, Ron Paul got booed when talking about foreign policy and Iraq, of how many innocents have been killed and how Islam isn't our enemy.
For a man to talk of peace and be booed by the audience says a lot about who we are. He was also only one of two veterans, people who actually served in the military, up on the stage.
It's people who have never been to war that are the ones who want to take us across the globe and conquer new lands because we don't like their leadership, so we bomb them into submission and rack up the deficit in the process.
Ron Paul is the only republican running who isn't thirsty to start new wars. Can you imagine someone like Michelle Bachmann as president? And Sarah Palin as her vice president? That'd be a team to restore America! Two women-hating women because they are pro-life.

Some of the things Ron Paul talked about last night, he mine as well been in a Democratic debate. He reminds me of Dennis Kucinich. (Another racist, by the way. Read that somewhere, too.)

Nobel peace prize winner Obama ran on an antiwar platform, but now that we've got a democratic president, some of the same people who attacked Bush for going to war with Iraq (which I should point out - he got congressional approval before going in) are the same ones who continue saying Obama can do no wrong and we are justified in Libya. Guaranteed if McCain had beat Obama and went to Libya (as he would have) the media and same people supporting Obama would be at his neck on it. No congressional approval? It's an illegal war then. Nation building? Deficit going up? How was Libya a threat to our national security?

Obama breaking promises he made before becoming president (we still have 44,000 troops in Iraq) from policies like Iraq and Guantanamo Bay (which is still open) makes him just another politician. You say one thing to get the votes and then do a 180 once you get in. Ron Paul at least has a proven track record on voting for what he says he will.
Even the most liberal of liberals, Michael Moore, has went on the offensive against Obama. What a surprise. (He's a racist though, obviously. Think that was in an ad in a news paper I read somewhere.)

Don't have time to click on all those links as I'm about to leave, but clicking the first one alone the title was taken out of context. Ron Paul never said we didn't need to go after bin laden, but that we should have worked with the Pakistani government in order to get him. Big difference but it's a good way to mislead a title to get a different point across.

Last night's interview on the Daily Show:

Yes, Ron Paul believes that after years of attempting to work with the Pakistani government to locate bin Laden, President Obama should have passed on time-sensitive actionable intelligence in favor of trying to work with them some more.

It's remarkably similar to his stance on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, arguing that racial segregation and discrimination would have been better solved by allowing the Invisible Hand of the Free Market to point the way to social change.  Nevermind the part about the Free Market failing to solve those problems during the one hundred years that followed the Civil War.  Oh, if only we'd waited a little longer!

If liberals "love Ron Paul" -- a premise that I, as a liberal, dispute -- it's because he's a true believer.  He's honest.  His policies remain consistent over time because they're united by a clear, definable principle of a hands-off government.  Compared to modern Conservatism, an ideology with an inexhaustible talent for completely redefining itself based on the political needs of the hour, Ron Paul at least has the integrity to stand behind his terrible, terrible ideas.
