Cake Shop Refuses Wedding Cake To Gay Couple

The owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood refused to bake a wedding cake for a local gay couple and now people are pushing a boycott against the owner.

Shop owner Jack Phillips probably didn’t think he was going to be wading into a civil rights debate a week ago when he told the gay couple that he would not make a cake for their wedding, but that’s exactly what has happened.

Dave Mullin and Charlie Craig say they dated for nearly two years before getting engaged. They went into the Masterpiece Cake Shop thinking they’d spend a full day trying cakes for their ceremony. Instead the meeting lasted a few seconds.

“My first comment was, ‘We’re getting married,’ and he just shut that down immediately,” Craig said.

It wasn’t the first time the shop turned down gay couples who wanted a cake. Phillips has received more than 1,000 angry messages about his stance.

“If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever,” Phillips said. “It’s just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle.”

Couldn't this lead to a discrimination type of law suit? (chick-fil-a hires and serves all regardless of sexual orientation or their CEO's personal opinions)

I doubt there are protections against such things based on sexual orientation in Colorado. If there are, the shop owner is potentially in real trouble. If there are not, he's in the clear.

Regardless, best of luck to the boycotters. I hope no LGBT person or ally buys another cake from that store until he changes his position.

The man condemns himself with the statement. The boycott is valid, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my concern for the fact that a business shouldn't be bullied into *having* to provide service.

If he was set off by the couples' lovey-dove nature or any other number of factors, then why could he not refuse service? Picture the "all day" thing with cake selection with a person who has your least favorite trait.

For this to be news? I dunno. It irks me in exactly the opposite way that chic-fil-a does.

Plus, money is money. If he would have made the cake, it's not like he would have been supporting their marriage or anything, just providing a service to a person. Your personal beliefs aren't compromised by making a cake.

It's not like they wanted a drawing of gay sex on top of the cake in rainbow icing (including santorum), although if they did that would be hilarious.

Too bad they didn't order up a multi-tiered red velvet ombre layer cake with white buttercream frosting, elaborate silver appointments, and a garish orange "Happy Birthday" scrawled across the peak where the little plastic couple would have gone.  Best way I can imagine to illustrate the utter absurdity of this man's position.
