Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni will sign into law Monday a controversial bill that will see homosexuals jailed for life, despite international pressure, a government spokesman said.

The Ugandan anti-gay bill cruised through parliament in December after its architects agreed to drop an extremely controversial death penalty clause, although the bill still says that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays.

"The president will sign the anti-homosexuality bill today," presidential spokesman Tamale Mirundi told AFP.

Museveni, a key African ally of the United States and the European Union, has already been under fire from key Western donors over alleged rampant corruption, and had been under pressure from diplomats and rights groups to block the legislation.

"The president cannot be pushed by the international lobby groups... he has made it clear whatever he does will be in the interests of Uganda and not foreign interests," Mirundi said.

"Uganda is a sovereign state and the decisions taken must be respected."

"This is the moment the world has been waiting for," he told AFP.

Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian, earlier this month also signed into law anti-pornography and dress code legislation which outlaws "provocative" clothing, bans scantily-clad performers from Ugandan television and closely monitors what individuals watch on the Internet.

Is February anti-tolerance month or something?

Speedos and short shorts are the international symbol of homosexuality?  I know monocles are the international symbol for being rich, so it's nice to know I can now tell a gay person by his choice in swim and summer wear.

Also, if you had done your homework, you'd know I'm ALWAYS wearing speedos under my clothes.  I never know when I'll be asked to perform a sexy, sexy dance for the ladies.  Tear away pants have been one of the few constants in my life since childhood.  It started when I was in Junior High. I'd be in the cafeteria at lunch and someone would whip out a boombox.  Inevitably some C&C Music Factory would get played and whoosh...off I'd go.

Anyway, what was the topic again?  Arizona?

I don't know.. are they? If they are, all the WWE wrestlers must be gay.

Besides I was referring to this particular point of the law:

Looks like Monday Night Raw won't be airing in Uganda anytime soon.

I think it's specifically lime green speedos.. and I always wear my monocle whenever I go for a loan.. Fools them every time! Never even need a credit check!

American missionaries can be proud, supposedly they had a direct link in spreading the fear and pushing for the bill.

Signed into law.

Quote
A Ugandan newspaper listed 200 people it accused of being gay, a day after the president called homosexuals 'mercenaries' and signing one of the world's toughest anti-gay laws.

"Exposed!" the headline of the Red Pepper tabloid read, beneath photographs of Ugandans it said were gay, as well as reporting on lurid stories of alleged homosexual actions.

"Uganda's 200 top homos named," the daily newspaper added, which listed both those who have openly declared their sexuality as well as those who had not, including gay rights activists, priests and music stars.

"In salutation to the new law, today we unleash Uganda's top homos and their sympathisers," the newspaper added.

In 2011, prominent Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato was bludgeoned to death at his home after a different newspaper splashed photos, names and addresses of gays in Uganda on its front page along with a yellow banner reading "Hang Them".

On Monday, President Yoweri Museveni signed a bill into law which holds that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays.

Museveni said he could not understand how one could "fail to be attracted to all these beautiful women and be attracted to a man" instead and described in graphic details his particular revulsion to oral sex.

"There is something really wrong with you," Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian who has been in power nearly three decades, said of gay men.

The best thing we can do is put pressure on them through political channels and sanctions.  They need the outside world far more than the outside world needs them so I'm assuming they'll buckle under pressure.

remember this is a guy who's been in power for a long time.  I doubt that international pressure means a thing to him.

Quote from: from the wiki
Recent developments, including the abolition of presidential term limits before the 2006 elections, Museveni's confirmation of the Public Order Management Bill a bill which severely limits freedom of assembly media censorship and the persecution of democratic opposition (i.e. general intimidation of voters by security forces; arresting opposition candidates; extrajudicial killings) have attracted concern from domestic and foreign commentators. Most recently, indicators of an alleged succession to the President's son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, have increased tensions

not exactly what one would consider a fair and democratically elected official.

I know that at least Denmark and Norway have already cut some economic aid to the country, and we are threatening to cut more, instead channeling the money to local Ugandan organizations working for democracy and human rights. No ruler can keep power without money, as this guy might soon discover.

I read somewhere that they have discovered oil deposits and will start shipping oil very soon, so money might not be as much of an issue for him anymore.
