Washington state passed a law removing 'sexist' language from statutes.

You can't make this stuff up:

Quote
"Fisherman" is now a "fisher." "Penmanship" is called "handwriting."   "His" is now “his and hers.” "Clergyman" is now "clergy." "Journeyman plumber" is now “journey-level plumber,” according to the Daily Mail.

If one eschews the key point that this undercuts centuries of proper grammatical precedent and focuses for a moment on the ridiculousness of such pervasive all inclusiveness, I'm not sure how anyone with a grain of common sense thinks this is a good use of government time or is a necessary measure at all.  PC run amok.

... and complaining about "Liberal" sensibilities on a topic where legal documents should reflect the "Liberal" gender equality isn't more of a waste of time? Frankly, I'd like to see legal documents move into the twenty-first century beyond just gender-biased wording.

As a Canadian with all my rights reserved, I shouldn't NEED a lawyer to well-represent myself in any legal sense - the fact that laws, which hold centuries of good grammar and poor clarity in common language, apply to all people, the words should be clear enough to understand to a lower common denominator.

Updating a few words to remove gender bias is far beneath what needs to be done, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

Frankly the words "uninstall" and "un-thaw", both prevalent in common vernacular, bother me far more than someone updating fisherman to fisher. Manhole cover got a pass though, and I'm grateful for that. (it makes me giggle a little whenever I hear it slywink ).

It's funny, my wife and I were just reminiscing about the effort that we put into making language gender-neutral during our college journalism days -- in the late 1970s. The context of our conversation was "dumb shit that young people get hung up on." It seemed so important at the time....

It's not about being PC as I understand it, but to be grammatically correct in the modern world.

Oddly enough, most definitions of liberalism include the end results of civil rights, freedom of religion, freedom of press, etc.   one should also ask oneself where the word "libertarian" came from if they think liberalism is simply hippies trying to add womyn to the dictionary.
