The second most important tenant of the modern Conservative movement is that the modern Conservative movement is never wrong. It cannot fail; it can only *be* failed. The "reevaluation" you're going to see over the next few days will not be about why the right-wing ideology relentlessly championed by Mitt Romney proved to be so toxic in a general election -- it will come in the form of all the Republican friends and family you have suddenly discovering, for the very first time, that they never supported Romney at all. He lost, they'll say, because he wasn't Conservative enough.
Rush Limbaugh spent at *least* forty-five minutes making this exact point on his show today. Mitt Romney? Nice guy, good family man, shrewd businessman, but if only he'd been more Conservative, spent more time calling the President a liberal, been less timid in his embrace of Conservative Truth, they could have overthrown Obama's regime of prejudice and hate. We're four years closer to transforming the country into a tyrannical socialist commune, said Rush, and it could have been reversed if only the Republicans would have engaged in a robust, happy, forthright presentation of Conservatism. Limbaugh and my local right-wing talk show hosts also spent a good part of the day grousing about how unfair and unrepresentative the electoral college is, as though they weren't describing it as an example of the divine prescience of our founding fathers back when Bush lost the popular vote in 2000. I'm fucking baffled. I mean I get why Limbaugh and other talk show hosts are spouting this message - they are catering to their audience. But there's got to be no goddamn way the rest of the party thinks this. The theory of 'well, we didn't get enough of our old, rich, white, bible thumping base out to the polls' just cannot at all be grounded in fact. There's no way that being MORE conservative brings them a measurably larger turnout of the people who are probably already all voting their way. Even if it did, it certainly wouldn't outweigh the minorities, women, and younger people who *aren't* all voting today and the ones that are, are clearly against conservatism. This logic simply can't stand. I mean a two party system is shitty, but a one party system is fucking awful. The Republicans need to get their shit together.

The Republican party just needs to figure out how to cater to the ever growing Latino population who, really, should be voting Republican but votes Democratic instead.

Never underestimate the Republicans' ability to rewrite their own history. Case in point: That was an ass kicking.
I wouldn't call Obama being the first president to win reelection with a smaller number of electoral votes than he earned the first time to an "ass kicking". That's weird. Back in 2004 when President George W. Bush won reelection with a much, much narrower margin in a single swing state, Ohio, Conservatives declared he the American people had awarded him a mandate, earning him tremendous political capital to spend on privatizing Social Security. Never mind that he hadn't campaigned on that idea at all: it was a massive ass-kicking that proved the mainstream popularity of all Conservative ideals. Of course, Republicans also refused to acknowledge the nationwide shellacking they took in the 2008 race either. At least they're consistent once in a while. -Autistic Angel Nice straw man you've built there.

Yes, it is. When one jockey mercilessly slanders another, spreads savage lies about his record and qualifications, insinuates that he isn't even eligible to race, and even tries to claim credit for the other guy's victories, that isn't one of those times. You're not stooping to his level simply by recognizing he's covered in filth. -Autistic Angel

The Republican party just needs to figure out how to cater to the ever growing Latino population who, really, should be voting Republican but votes Democratic instead. The problem is, there's a sizable segment of the base that prides itself on it's xenophobia, as seen by the relentless pandering of the candidates to this faction during the primaries. "Self-deportation" was only the start of it, but damning enough to cause Romney big problems once he got to the general. Anyone remember Herman Cain's electric fence? There's been a big degradation in this area for the GOP since W., who was a liberal on immigration in comparison to the status quo. So that's the pickle for the GOP: it's hard to simultaneously court Hispanics and fans of alligator moats on the border.

You'd think replacing the lunatic fringe with a quickly growing segment of the US population who shares the party ideal would be the smart thing to do. But noooooooooo. That would be too easy!

No. I don't represent other conservatives. I represent me. And since what you're saying has absolutely nothing to do with the position I've taken (ME, not other conservatives, but ME), you're creating a straw man.

I've been checking drudge report for post election hilarity. as a conservative site, you'd think they'd avoid reporting on an employer who fired a bunch of his employees because Obama won. Not sure how that casts him in a positive light in any way, shape or form.

But: boy also aren't very smart so it isn't really surprising that you do not get the severity of what just happened in our country.
Ah Eccy, you've repeatedly proven that you can't even grasp simple economics so how do you expect anyone to take your insult seriously? As I've said before, take a few classes at a local community college. Then come back and opine away. As for the bozo in the article, he'd be proving your point IF he had fired his employees AFTER being forced to comply with health care reform. Doing it the day after the election before anything has been decided/enforced shows it to be a knee jerk reaction of a cry baby who didn't get his way (sort of reminds me of you...although you did earlier say you hoped Obama could turn the country around, only to prove that was a lie with this recent post). As for Ron Paul? "The people in the Midwest voted against him: 'Oh, we have to be taken care of!' So that vote was sort of like what we are laughing at in Greece," Mr. Paul said.
"People do not want anything cut," he said. "They want all the bailouts to come.
Translation: Goddamn peasants don't want to lose their jobs? How dare they not want to starve in service to their masters!

Yeah, do it. Go right ahead. The Benghazi incident isn't some presidential cover-up, no matter how hard you try to characterize it. Anybody who tries to characterize it as such ignores the facts outright and assumes that our intelligence organizations have intimate knowledge of every situation worldwide immediately as it happens.

Wow, personal attacks against the main GT staff now? I'm starting to think you're actually trying to see how far you can escalate things before you get banned. You didn't answer his point btw. There is no way for anyone, ANYONE, to have every bit of information immediately regarding world matters. The world is far, far more complex than that. You seem to believe that anyone who doesn't see the world as black and white is naive, which is hilariously naive in itself.

Case closed. How is that even similar? That was a situation where he had ample time to reach a conclusion, and he did that by ignoring (and even silently accepting the ridicule of) all the people who disagreed with him. His intelligence was faulty (in more ways than one!) not because of a lack of spontaneous information, but because of preconceived conclusions and personal vendettas.

I was asked nicely to stop being an insulting jerk. At first I sputtered, "but...but....they...", then I went back and reread some of my posts.
...No one was innocent, least of all me.
So now I'm going to keep things a bit more lighthearted in my posts. Sure, I'll probably be sarcastic from time to time, but I think I'll stop going after people like they've just molested my favorite stuffed animal....
...which would be Mr. Binky, by the way. He creates quite the fetching figure in his finest silk jammies.

I just watched it this morning. Very well done documentary about some fabulously wealthy folks whose business model was a proverbial house of cards. Queen of Versailles was added, too, and it's supposed to be a fantastic documentary. Don't let the Jersey Shore meets Legally Blonde cover fool you. IIRC, the husband in that film was the same guy who threatened to lay off employees if Obama won.But Unions threatening members who do/did not go out and actively support Obama is apparently OK. Everyone enjoy this while the government keeps printing money at a far faster pace than both Yugoslavia and 1930s Germany while taxes jump for the entire population at the same time. Obama thought this was a "good thing" back during the debt crisis talks 2 years ago. Now, he is blaming Republicans for things HE SAID were a good thing. President Obama has lied, lied and lied again. The USA was built on Capitalism. It worked so well, Russia is copying what we did prior to 2004 to better their economy. Meanwhile, the USA under Obama and the Senate Democratic so-called leadership, is doing everything they can to turn the US Govt into exactly what failed the USSR???? Does this make any friggin' sense??????

Everyone enjoy this while the government keeps printing money at a far faster pace than both Yugoslavia and 1930s Germany while taxes jump for the entire population at the same time.
Thanks, I will. You know, I expressly voted for Obama because he: a) Is a Muslim b) Is not an American Citizen c) Promised to give me free stuff The USA was built on Capitalism. It worked so well, Russia is copying what we did prior to 2004 to better their economy. Meanwhile, the USA under Obama and the Senate Democratic so-called leadership, is doing everything they can to turn the US Govt into exactly what failed the USSR???? Does this make any friggin' sense??????
Da, Comrade...da.
