During tonight's climax of the Republican National Convention, Clint Eastwood took the primetime spotlight so he could snark at an imaginary, foul-mouthed Barack Obama that he should have checked Russian history before going to war in Afghanistan.  The audience laughed and applauded their approval.

Clint's act played well to the house, but it didn't go over so well on TV. Not his best performance.

Romney succeeded at humanizing himself and bringing his dislike factor down, while keeping the focus on the economy and tying it tightly to Obama. It was a good speech well delivered, probably the best of his career (as everybody said he needed). His polls will go up until the DNC's show cancels it out. Obama's quite good at inspirational generalizations, too.

I've become a big Eastwood fan over the last several years.  Million Dollar Baby, Gran Turino, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima -- he is one hell of a great film maker.  A lousy stand-up routine doesn't change that for me one bit.

It's the audience reaction that fascinates me.  Whether that Afghanistan comment was directed at Bush or Obama, that crowd of hardcore Conservatives was still laughing and clapping at the insinuation that the ground war there was a mistake.  

Remember a few years ago when Conservatives would *pretend* that's what mainstream Liberals thought so they could call it appeasement?  Cutting and running?  Treason?  Four years ago, the RNC was a national stage for fear-mongering about how Barack Obama would yank our troops out of the Middle East and reenact the final days of Vietnam.  Today?  Suggesting the invasion was a terrible idea in the first place -- as part of an attack against Imaginary Obama -- is a uproarious laugh line.
