On a more serious note I believe Palin and Christie did it (or were told they should) in order to get the GOP base to coalesce among the existing pool of Republican candidates instead of holding out for an amorphous leader-who-has-yet-to-run. Or as I like to tell my 3-year old: you get what you get and you don't get upset.
