and Ri Yong-ho got the heave ho
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was named as marshal of the country's army, completing his control over the state and military, North Korean media reported on Wednesday.
The decision to make the young leader the highest ranked military officer was made on Tuesday and came after the country's top general was sacked on Monday.
On Monday, North announced that Ri Yong-ho, the chief of the military's general staff, was removed from all his posts because of unspecified "illness."
This came as a surprise as Ri has been considered to have played a key role in new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un taking over the regime after his father Kim Jong-il's death.
Korian media reported that the Wednesday's move was to show to the outside world that North Korea is under the firm leadership of the new young leader Kim Jong Un.
The new title completes Kim Jong-un's elevation following the death of his father Kim Jong-il in December. He already heads the Workers' Party of Korea and is First Chairman of the National Defence Commission.
Kim -- believed to be in his late 20s -- has steadily worked to impose his own stamp on the top leadership of North Korea, and on Sunday ousted Vice Marshal Ri Yong-ho, the country's leading military figure, who was seen as close to Kim Jong-il.
