Stevens has been the long-time leader in pork for decades. Alaska receives far more tax dollars per capita
than any other state. As evidenced by the bridge to nowhere, he wasn't interested in spending your money wisely - he was just trying to get it back to his home state.
Take, for example, this data from Taxpayers for Common Sense
The new research has found that Senator Stevens has secured or played a significant role in securing more than 891 earmarks worth $3.2 billion, which comes to $4,872 per capita over the last four years. This is more than 18 times the national average of $263 per capita for the same four years.
It wouldn't be reasonable for states to expect a 1:1 return on tax dollars collected, but Alaska shouldn't be getting 18x the national average. (Particularly because their republican governor got her way with the windfall tax on oil profits
, so the state's doing even better than usual these days.)
Of course, all of Alaska's federal representation are crooked. Don Young, their only congressman, also took bribes from VECO, and is notable for recently allocating $10 million for the construction of a highway interchange in Florida. Oddly, a real estate developer who owns 4,000 acres along that road had donated $40k to Young's re-election.
Consequently, this isn't exactly just business-as-usual.
