our government has offered more help to Japan today than was sent to New Orleans in HOW LONG after Hurricane Katrina.  Sickening.

There were many issues surrounding the response to Katrina
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_government_response_to_Hurricane_Katrina
(read the whole thing)

I tend to think it's much simpler to offer aid to another country in time of crisis than it is to coordinate it on home soil. You're dealing with local and state government too, not just federal....and all the jurisdictions and red tape that come with that.  Its far simpler to get on the phone and offer aid to another country immediately after the event, or release a message to the press indicating it. Then it would be a call to the military to gather the aid up and send it to Japan. Manpower aid can be handled separately without the governments intervention, which was not the case for Katrina.

The real test is how the Japanese responds to this compared to how we did.

I get it when people say the U.S. should start at home.  But in the grand scheme of things, the U.S. will be able to help many more people in Japan than at home.

I would think that the people who suffered from Hurricane Katrina are above all this "eye for an eye" crap and pray that no one else has to suffer and wait as long as they did for help.

A Pew Research Center poll found nearly half of Americans hold the false belief that TARP was passed under President Obama, while only 34 percent know it originated under Bush.
"Oh yeah?" Bush replied. "50% of the people were wrong."
