This is quite simply idiotic. Forcing folks to do something against their religion is against the very essence of the constitution. Anyone who supports this in the U.S. doesn't have a clue what America is about.

I know France has a huge problem with violence from their Northern African immigrants (to be fair, they DID colonize the hell out of that region...usually against the wishes of the natives, and the French have a nasty history of discrimination against them) and that those folks are predominantly Muslim, but if you're on fire, you don't leap into an oven to put it out.
I predict this will not end well...

Lol, this coming from the guy who has a confederate flag as his pic. I'm not going on the racism angle on that either, the confederate flag was created in large part because the southerners were sick of the federal government telling them what to do. And here you are saying the federal government should tell us if we can or can't wear things over our face. Way to lose sight of things.

For conjecture lets go down this slippery slope. Next we will need to outlaw the use of gloves, after all we need people to leave finger prints behind. We will also need to outlaw people from shaving their body hair, we need those DNA samples. We will also need to outlaw people from wearing shoes with heels higher than 1 inch, we want an accurate picture of their height don't we. Lets just keep this going.
Or was this really only about religion?

I think this is more interesting: On Saturday, French police arrested around 60 people who turned up for a banned protest over the veil ban which had been called by a Muslim group in Britain. One of the protestors was arrested on his arrival from Britain, a police spokesman said. Not only are they banning burkas, but you're BANNED from even PROTESTING it.

They've been trying to do this for years now. Around ten years ago they tried to ban headscarves and veils from school, arguing either that a) they distracted students or b) religious objects shouldn't be permitted in the secular schools. Of course, no one wanted necklaces with crosses to be banned so that latter argument didn't pan out.
Racism against Arabs was pretty prevalent back then, especially in the south of France. One presidential candidate even got around 20% of the vote with a mainly "let's keep non-French people (whatever that means) out". While it may be true that there is high crime Arab sections of many cities (or, perhaps more likely, the suburbs), I think the problem is more due to the suppressed socio-economic state of many Arabs in France, not their religion.

Well, this is an excellent way for France to ensure that all muslim women who considered wearing a full veil will now certainly do so. Nothing's quite as effective for getting someone to follow a religious practice by telling they can't. I can't see this law staying on the books for long.

I oppose the full-on face veil, because if a person is wearing it, you cannot see whether they are who they say they are or perhaps an old reviled enemy, previously expelled from the community for douchebaggery, returning in a new guise to make trouble for their own puerile amusement.

Why would this be a good thing? Why does an idea get immediately shot down simply because of the OP? I have plenty of stupid ideas... I'm not a fan of the burka --- I think it's a symbol of muslim women's oppression by their religion. It shouldn't be banned because it's a religious symbol - rather, it needs to be banned because the Muslim religion is extremely ass-backwards towards women. It's an educational issue more than a religious one. Women who aren't allowed to show their face are being oppressed - they're being stripped of their individuality. Of course, this is coming from a religion where females aren't free to marry who they want, and are often traded for livestock, ammunition, and iPads. It's just another symbol of Religion being used for population control. This is extremely easy to say as an outsider looking in.

I'm not sure what your point here is. I would've disagreed with ANYONE who tried to say that our government should start forcing people to go against their religion (well, practices that are harmless to others). That it was Darkstar endorsing this sentiment is incidental. Although he has a history of posting vaguely (and sometimes not so vague) racist beliefs. And I would like to remind you that not all Muslims are misogynistic. Indonesia had a female president and Pakistan had a female Prime Minister (of course, that didn't end well). Unfortunately, the Muslims we hear most about are the Muslims who are committing the worst atrocities.

The French ban on burquas? Would a ban on guns here in the United States be an appropriate warning to criminals who use guns then?

Except that in the case of burka wearers in France, most of them decide to wear it themselves. They're not forced to now show their face. This ban is the thing that oppressed them because now they either have to be forced to not wear the burka or not ever leaving their private home if they want to continue to wear it.

She didn't get to be the president because the misogynistic muslims in other parties stopped her when her party won the election. So they got a compromise and made her the vice president with a muslim cleric as the president. She only became the president because the president turned out to be either senile or too crazy so they impeached the president and the VP became the president to serve the remaining of the term. After that she tried to be reelected and failed so muslims in Indonesia are still misogynistic.

We've never had one female president, so they're still at least one up on us.
I would say that garnering enough votes to get to such a high post indicates that not all Muslims in your country believe women solely exist as slaves to men.

I didn't really think about this before, but if burka wearing females in france decided to ... i don't know, drop off some 'packages' in subway stations - they could get away with it because the security camera wouldn't really catch their face.
If they banned the burka for that reason, would people disagree?

That is one of the reasons they're giving, and it's still ridiculous. They point to one robbery where the criminals wore burqas, but if I remember correctly they were worn purely as a disguise. You might as well ban pantyhose since people can wear those as disguises. Backpacks and pockets can also potentially conceal implements of destruction, so those should be out as well.

By the way, several news reports have indicated the estimated number of women in France who routinely wear burqas.
It's about 200.
OMG! They're taking over!
