But there's no way in hell that is Dave Novotny. A high school teacher would know that the word "have" would never follow the word "neither". Obviously, "has" is the correct verb to use here. While it's not the most egregious grammatical infraction I've seen on Tea Party signs, I doubt that a woman of Reese Witherspoon's caliber would lay down with a such a careless and inarticulate chap.

For what it's worth, "Birther" is a common identifier for people who believe that Barack Obama was born outside the United States.  The name is an offshoot of "Truthers," the label used to describe people who believe the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were carried out by the American government.

Both conspiracy theories are equally stupid, but while the Truther movement is a fringe phenomenon which is only occasionally given voice by high-profile people like Rosie O'Donnell or Ed Asner, the Birther movement has been extensively promoted by mainstream Conservative media outlets and elected officials.  There used to be a great YouTube video in which Mike Stark asked eight sitting Republican congressmen whether they accepted that Obama is an American citizen and they each refused to answer, but unfortunately it's no longer available.

In 2009, the House of Representatives introduced a resolution commemorating the 50^th anniversary of Hawaii's becoming an official state...including the factoid that it's Barack Obama's birthplace.  It passed unanimously, but as of August 2010, a CNN poll showed that 27% of Americans remained Birthers.

And while no apology was written, I read it as a friendly stepping down from a strong position to a mild one. That act is appreciated - I wrote several versions of the response above before settling on the "funnier" one simply because I think that pr0ner had reacted too strongly to something that I wrote which wasn't entirely clear.

I should have originally posted a gellar remark like "on my give-a-fuck-o-meter" about the (potentially) racial slur - it wasn't heavy in delivery and seemed almost accidental; given that it isn't something I would even take seriously, I don't get it.

AA, thanks for the birther elaboration - it still bundles (and dismisses) anyone with concerns about the origin of their current president in a "looney bin" pigeon-hole. It also gives them a commonality and that is exactly the opposite of what they need.
