I don't think the state cares who or for what purpose someone is bailed out of prison.
Adding, of course, that I have zero respect for "Dr." Phil, who isnt even a doctor.

Ok, I'm going to have to get it out there -
I record Dr. Phil episodes when I'm at work and watch them during the evening.
Every night.
I love the guy - think he's a great person, helping out people, good advice, love his little sayings and such... but I don't understand this move by him. It's weird of him to do something like that.

This statement is utterly false. from Wikipedia McGraw transferred to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He went on to earn a Master's degree in experimental psychology in 1976, and a Ph.D in clinical psychology in 1979 at the University of North Texas[7], where his dissertation was titled "Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention."

Also from Wikipedia. Same page, in fact! The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists imposed disciplinary sanctions on McGraw on January 27, 1989 for an inappropriate "dual relationship" reported in 1988 by a therapy client/employee from 1984. McGraw was ordered by the Board to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical evaluation, undergo a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to continue his private practice in Texas. McGraw admits to giving the client a "job" at his office (which is not allowed), but denied carrying on a sexual relationship with the 19-year-old, who says their relationship was "sexually inappropriate."[30][3][12] As of 2008, McGraw has not completed the conditions imposed by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists,[31] and he is not licensed to practice psychology in Texas, California, or anywhere else.[32]

He has a Ph.D! That makes him a doctor, regardless of his ability to actually practice anywhere. I guess if Phil McGraw is no longer a doctor, then Bill Clinton is no longer a lawyer, even though he holds the appropriate degrees?

Still, it is shady of him to offer clinical advice when he is not licensed to do so. Edit: just to clarify, once one gets a Ph.D. in psychology, he still must pass licensing exams to practice clinically. I have a Ph.D. in psychology, but have no desire to treat patients (I do research), so I won't be pursuing a license.

I think Dr. Cpt. Caveman's point is that, once you get a PhD, those credentials don't lapse.

Maybe we can petition the IOC to pull his credentials; they've got all kinds of retroactive powers. Maybe they could just force adding two spaces to be added to his title? Dr. Phil; Psycho_the_rapist.

I have a Ph.D. and will always have a Ph.D. I will thus always be a "Dr.".
Like most Ph.D.s in psychology who would rather conduct research or be professors instead of treating patients, I have not taken my state's clinical licensing exam. Neither has a Ph.D. in philosophy or biology or english lit., but that doesn't make them any less of a "Dr.".
But yeah, Dr. Phil is a douche, and he isn't authorized to conduct clinical practice. I image he tells guests of his show that all his feedback is just "advice" and not professionally or legally binding.

To get back on topic, two things: A) From reading the article, it seems like McGraw had nothing to do with the bail payment; his staffers acted independently. B) I'm pretty sure the state doesn't care who pays bail, so long as it gets paid. It's practically free money, and opens up jail space.

Brendan! We agree on something. Dr. Phil has earned the right to be called Dr by completing his doctorate. Dr's in English don't have to keep certifications current -- they earned the degree.
