What...the...fuck.  When did we allow celebutard-chasers like "Dr." Phil start checking people out of jail for 'treatment'?  I don't care whether or not anyone overstepped the boundaries of the show, how is it that the state allows this?  Is this not exploitation for entertainment?

That means he isn't licensed to practice clinically, but he did complete his Ph.D. (ergo, he is a "Dr."). Still, it is shady of him to offer clinical advice when he is not licensed to do so.

Edit: just to clarify, once one gets a Ph.D. in psychology, he still must pass licensing exams to practice clinically. I have a Ph.D. in psychology, but have no desire to treat patients (I do research),  so I won't be pursuing a license.

If I let my certifications lapse (or am ordered by the governing body to hand over my credentials until I fulfill further requirements) then I no longer use those letters. I think the show should be renamed to Mr. Phil.

Like most Ph.D.s in psychology who would rather conduct research or be professors instead of treating patients, I have not taken my state's clinical licensing exam. Neither has a Ph.D. in philosophy or biology or english lit., but that doesn't make them any less of a "Dr.".

But yeah, Dr. Phil is a douche, and he isn't authorized to conduct clinical practice. I image he tells guests of his show that all his feedback is just "advice" and not professionally or legally binding.

To get back on topic, two things:

A) From reading the article, it seems like McGraw had nothing to do with the bail payment; his staffers acted independently.

B) I'm pretty sure the state doesn't care who pays bail, so long as it gets paid.  It's practically free money, and opens up jail space.

Dr. Phil has earned the right to be called Dr by completing his doctorate.    Dr's in English don't have to keep certifications current -- they earned the degree.
