Heh...I'm actually going to see a preview on Saturday for this movie.  I knew it was coming and since I'm a 28 year old religious viewer of Yu-Gi-Oh I can't not go see a free preview of it

I saw part of the first Pokemon movie some time back at Wal Mart.  It was so bizarre that I found myself watching it for about a half an hour before I snapped back to reality.

There is just something oddly appropriate about standing in a Wal Mart watching a VHS copy of Pokemon the Movie on a cheap 27-inch television while shoppers weave around you.

I've never seen Yu Gi Oh the cartoon but I have seen the card game.  The other night I was thinking our fearless leader, Knightshade Dragon, should license his name because it sounds like it would fit right in alongside Blue Eyed White Dragon and the other card titles.

I told people I was most disappointed that the preview starts when Yu-Gi-Oh is on TV here.  Oh well, just have to tape that I guess...heh.

I was in the store last night and there was an article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal about how anime has influenced the current crop of Japanese-language students, and how they study like hell just to be able to translate anime correctly. Quite cool, and I can now say that anime has graced the front page of the Wall Street Journal in my lifetime.

Yu Gi Oh? Oyh... Whenever I wonder where some of these game makers have gotten their horrible voice actors, it's from these things.

The movie wasn't half bad, but I was stuck up in the front of the theater (the person I went with is legally blind and has to be close to see stuff).  I'd love to see this on DVD, but am afraid Warner Bros. may give it the full-frame treatment they gave the Pokemon movies.

Being so close to the screen I wasn't able to ascertain whether the graphics were as good as the TV series or not, although the cards themselves looked much cooler than the TV series.  This movie happens after the current storyline on television and there is quite a few amazing things they do in the movie, such as

Yugi combines the 3 God cards to create a creature with infinite power/defense.  A new Blue Eyes White Dragon level is attained beyond Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon (where 3 become one) and a card is found that is more powerful than the God cards.  Old duelists make new appearances (although that is given away in the preview).

If you have a child that is into Yu-Gi-Oh, it's really a pretty good movie and it is surprisingly long for an animated movie...longer than any of the Pokemon movies I've seen.  Also if you're an older fan it's quite good as well.  Some of the things they do during duels is unbelievable, but then again so are the tricks they pull in the TV series.

The only bad thing in the movie is that they follow the "anime in a mainstream theater" history of using hard rocking American songs during quiet parts of the movie.  Hopefully WB will bring out the Japanese track for this movie as well, but much like Pokemon I doubt it will happen.

Word is Warner Bros. is pressuring the animation company in Japan to make more Yu-Gi-Oh movies in order to bank on their popularity ala the Pokemon movies.
