The internet is failing me--does anyone know what the opening line to the original manual for 1st edition D&D is?

Someone on here recommended The Rook a while back. I remember browsing through the first paragraph via Amazon and it hooked me enough to make an instant purchase. The first line sets it up nicely:

Dear You,
The body you are wearing used to be mine.

A Pew Research Center poll found nearly half of Americans hold the false belief that TARP was passed under President Obama, while only 34 percent know it originated under Bush.
"Oh yeah?" Bush replied. "50% of the people were wrong."

I know it was in my books read list a while back, with me posting the  Unshelved comic that hooked me into it.

I don't know if it's my favorite, but for some reason one line always stuck with me.  I'm not going to look it up, so we'll see if my memory works:

"The great fish moved silently through the night waters."

EDIT: I was close.  It's water not waters and it goes on with "propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail."

I like the HHGTTG one, too.

That's like blaming owls because I suck at making analogies.
