I laughed, and cried a little at the cool shows we DON'T get here.

I'm not sure why they all didn't just dive through instead of going into those goofy poses, though.  Sure, it's funnier this way but you can see they "cheat" a couple times, so why not all the time?

half the fun would be trying to do the goofy poses.

That's probably why that show wouldn't make it in the US, unless there was a rule where you cannot just dive through the holes.  Way too many people would try to game the system.  After all, we are a country with a show that has people AGONIZING over what RANDOM suitcase to pick.

And that's the big cultural difference.  We can hardly fathom being on a gameshow and not doing everything you can to win.  With this Japanese show and others like Takeshi's Castle, the contestants just seem to be trying to...have fun?  Does not compute!

However, I think the 'have fun' part is what made The Price is Right what it was. Sure, it might be due to it becoming a cultural icon, but half the entertainment of the show is seeing the people and how they act. I mean, where else do you see gameshows with people wearing outfits devoting their love and affection to the host?

Technically all those people on that show are cultural icons.  Japan does not put "normal" people on shows like that.  They use famous celebrities who are already rich and really couldn't give a damn whether they won or lost.  There were two teams alright, but they weren't really competing for anything.  The losers got nothing and the winners got...nothing.  It's all about the laughs.

Well that makes a huge difference, obviously.  In a normal American gameshow it would be an average Joe getting his one and probably only shot to be on a gameshow and possibly win thousands of dollars.  Given that situation most people would want to do the best they could, I think.

But if everybody simply dove through the holes then it wouldn't be funny.  And I doubt that the average American could dive through those holes-even though they might be sly enough to try it.   Tongue

That's what I'm saying.  If, like in this game, you base the competition on something where the contestants really have nothing to win or lose, then they are free to act goofy and just have a good time.  If it is a chance for a nobody's 15 minutes of fame and several thousand dollars, then it changes the players' outlooks and actions.
