So it's Red Dawn without the nostalgia for the 80's where everyone hated Russia?
Why even bother.

The Chinese have been digitally converted to North Koreans. China has become such an important market for U.S. entertainment companies that one studio has taken the extraordinary step of digitally altering a film to excise bad guys from the Communist nation lest the leadership in Beijing be offended.
...
As a result, the filmmakers now are digitally erasing Chinese flags and military symbols from "Red Dawn," substituting dialogue and altering the film to depict much of the invading force as being from North Korea, an isolated country where American media companies have no dollars at stake.

How's this for conspiracy theories:
Back behind my previous residence was a big unused field that had a couple dozen decent sized puddles in it most of the time. This would lead to lots of mosquitos, of course.
So one time in a local discount store I bought these packets of supposed anti-mosquito pellets that you sprinkled in the puddles and it was supposed to take care of the mosquito problem.
But that summer not only was the problem still there, but now we had a new breed we had never seen before called the asian tiger mosquito (or some shit like that). They were everywhere, and the were really big and fast.
The following summer they were pretty much gone, somehow.
On those packets it read "Made in China"
.

Lame. North Korea would have a tough time invading South Korea, let alone the US.

That just looks horrible. Action didn't look great, none of the characters stood out, and the plot just seemed stupid.

I'd say the same of the original as it hasn't aged well. I thought the trailer looked like it might rejuvinate the storyline. I wouldn't say the trailer was enough to motivate an actual theater ticket purchase, but if it were to wind up on Netflix I might give it a try. I've certainly had my fill of the original though.

Lame. North Korea would have a tough time invading South Korea, let alone the US. I was saying that too about the ill fated Homefront shooter game oh, a couple years ago. Besides, I thought The Cartel was now the designated movie/game bad guy to use that theoretically won't offend some massive part of the global audience. Red Dawn has been rotting on the shelves for so long (it was filmed in late 2009), I don't know if audiences are hardly even going to recognize Hemsworth and Hutcherson at this point. I wonder if all the "don't want to offend China because it's too large a part of our prospective global box office" fretting will affect Iron Man 3, which is doing some filming there. Maybe they'll make the Mandarin a benevolent guy who kisses puppies and helps old ladies across the street. Since any movie with combat set in places we're actually at war (Afghanistan) or were at war (Iraq) has been box office poison in recent years, I suspect we're left with North Korea, The Cartel and Space Aliens as movie bad guys. Global box office is just too important to the studios now, and they don't feel they can risk offending any nation that they do decent box office in, or "scaring away" anyone by setting things in current/recent actual settings.

After seeing the trailer I am more convinced that this was an idea that only worked before the breakup of the USSR.

Agreed. And even the title itself makes no sense if you change everything to North Korea. Their flag does have red in it, but ironically enough it also has white and blue on it. You could call it "Red, White and Blue Dawn," and it'll be about our nation invading itself.
