It was a helpful explanation of the history behind the joke. I didn't know what TED was, for example.
In another reading I guess I can see how RedJak may have thought that Moliere was saying "I've always wondered!" in reference to the xkcd comic itself, rather than in reference to the use of smiley parentheticals, and was explaining the TED reference to him. First impression was that RedJak was somehow offended by the comic belittling TED or something.

Not in the least. It just followed a slew of people not getting the 10 inch pianist joke so I actually read Moliere's post as another "I don't get it" post but now I see he was referring to the actual content. Ever few months I try to be useful on these boards and I am counting this one! <Lurk On>

With the alt text: I'll concede ergonomics anecdotally, but none of the studies of Dvorak were at all rigorous (the most-cited Navy study was overseen by Dvorak himself). And the 'slow typists down' thing is a myth. Also EMACS RULES VI DROOLS WOOOOOOO!

that chart is so true. people are so scared of technology for some reason. know how i got this good fixing and building computers? because I can read. I don't have some innate trait that makes me have this knowledge. it's called research.
here's a protip: if it's not working, whatever you're going to do to it won't matter. it's broken already, you can only make it better.

FYI the first xkcd printed book was recently released at store.xkcd.com with selections from the first 600 comics. I think I'll be putting it up at the top of my wishlist this Christmas. Just $18, too.

You missed the alt-text. Hover the mouse over it or look at the image properties on the main site. They won't transfer via posting the image, so it takes a bit more work than normal.

NOOOOOO!!! I thought the "alt-text" was the stuff at the top (thats why i put in monty python - enough). and because i started at the beginning, from what i saw in these comics, i just thought he didnt "develop" those more fully until later
do you have any idea how many i have to go back and re-view now!!!

I <3 this one. I'm not 100% sure, but this may be the first xkcd that has me at a total loss. Spoiler for explanation from xkcd forums: As a quick explanation, in discussions of cryptography and encodings, etc, Bob is the standard name of the party sending information, and Alice is the standard name of the party receiving information. If there's a passive listener on the line, eavesdropping on the call, we call her Eve (get it, Eavesdropping = Eve?). If Eve fiddles with the information, she's called Mallory, and if there's a trusted third party, he's called Trent. We just use names instead of letters or roles because it's easier to say "Bob's message is read by Eve" than "The outgoing message sent by the first party was intercepted and read by a passive third party listener who's not trusted".
