I used to work in roofing when I was a young guy (never could get used to being up that high), and on one job a friend of mine fell two stories onto the lawn. He was ok- I told him it was stupid to not go to a doctor, but he never went.
And on the other hand, you hear about people who die falling ten feet.

I had the X-Games on while we were waiting for guests to arrive to watch 300, and while we were chatting I saw the fall happen live. The crowd went crazy when he landed the 720 off the first ramp, but then everyone went silent when he lost his board and started drifting away from the ramp. He hit so hard that his shoes shot off his feet, and we were certain that he had to at least have broken his legs, feet, or ankles. I was shocked when he walked off almost entirely on his own.
The stunts in the X-Games increase in difficulty and danger every year as athletes push the envelope even further than ever before, and I'm just happy to see that he wasn't seriously hurt as I've seen some horrible injuries in extreme sports.

There's an excerpt from Travis Pastrana's book in the most recent ESPN Mag. It talks about his double backflip from last years Moto Best Trick. He mentions frequently in there that he questioned his sanity even up until the moment he was going down the ramp to do the trick.
On the other hand though, these guys make killer money doing something they love and gives them a huge rush. I gotta envy that.

Someone tried to do the double backflip yesterday and basically got about 1.75 the way. Guy slammed right down on his wrist and almost got attacked by his bike. Also managed to walk away, but he was holding his arm close to his body. I'm not sure if it was a bad injury, but it looked it.

When you get the huge plate of wings with the hottest sauce they have, you will later experience what is referred to as "the ring of fire". And it's not the one Johnny Cash was talking about.

Ahem, back on topic: OK, so maybe he didn't quite "walk it off"Skateboarder Jake Brown, whose 45-foot free-fall Thursday night brought a hush to the crowd at Staples Center, remains hospitalized after suffering bruises of the liver and lung, stress fractures in his vertebrae and a small fracture on the top of one hand. Ouch. Kanights was critical of X Games medical personnel for not immobilizing Brown immediately and placing him in a stretcher. This struck me as bizzare as well. You'd think that would be a standard precautionary measure, if nothing else.

You'd think that would be a standard precautionary measure, if nothing else. there is no way he should have been allowed to walk away from that accident. he could easily have had a serious spinal injury and they're lucky that allowing him to stand up and walk didn't worsen an already bad situation. anyone involved in a fall like that should be immediately stabilized on a backboard and have a C-collar prior to being transported to the hospital to undergo imaging of the spine. but what to do i know, i'm just a doctor that sees spinal injuries on a pretty regular basis, not part of their "best medical staff in the business..."
