Up until a week ago, over the past year we've received maybe 5-6 wrong number phone calls to our house. But, starting about a week ago, we're getting 3-4 wrong number phone calls a day, all from different local numbers, and they never ask for the same person or business. It's really weird.

Don't answer the phone and do a phone message like "this is xxx-xxxx, the malichai11 residence, we're not home blah blah blah."

The semi-clueless might get the point and not call anymore.

Or maybe you're the newly-nominated neighborhood drug mule?

I moved recently and got a new number, and I've constantly been getting wrong numbers myself.  I don't know if it's for people who used to have the number or what, but last night when I got a collect call from an inmate at the Johnson County correctional facility I started getting a little worried. :|

(Sadly not a joke)

I got the exact same collect call, Johnson County Correctional Facility,  like 8 times.  One Saturday it was at like 6am too.  Must be some bullshit scam.  Needless to say I never accepted the call to find out.  I'm relieved to hear that someone else got the same, at least its not just me.

Back when I lived in Hays, KS, I got a collect call from someone in jail and I felt really bad for them that they got the wrong number. I even offered to try and get ahold of whomever it was they were looking for. They declined my offer.

A few months ago I had the same girl calling my cell phone constantly and asking for Sarah. This girl actually asked me once why I always answer "sarah's" cell phone. I told her it's been my cell phone for ages.

The truly funny part of the whole thing was that the first couple of times she called she left messages for Sarah in my voicemail. Well, my voicemail recording starts with "You've got Josh's Cell phone. Leave a message." And I do not have one of those voices where it could go either way. Someone actually compared my voice to Hugh Jackman a few weeks ago while we were watching X2, if that gives you an idea. I eventually changed it to say "This is Josh's cell phone, don't leave messages for people who don't own this number, unless you're an idiot."

She stopped calling my phone.

Wow.  That makes me feel a lot better.  The dude didn't sound very pleasant when he said his name, so I just had pictures of him getting released and coming to the house his girlfriend used to live and... well... let's just say I have an overactive imagination and leave it at that. biggrin

That's why Caller ID is the bestest invention of the century - if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer it.

I *thought* I read somewhere that that's a known scam - where inmates are trying to get people to accept the charges, yet then are somehow making very expensive long distance phone calls charged to your phone...  it sounds rather Snopesish (is that a word??), I  know, but for some reason this sounds very familiar to me.  And to now hear a similar things happening to two different people just makes me wonder...

Edited to add: Now with links!

I found more, but didn't want to fill up the post with links.  But I knew I wasn't imagining things! slywink

Man my wife and I have lived with a phone number that is one number off from a local mental hospital.  I can't tell you how many crazy calls we have received at all hours of the night.

They don't come in as much as they used to but we still get a few here and there.  9 times out of 10 the people were nice when told they had dialed the wrong number.  Then there is few that cuss you out etc.

We did have one message left from a guy that seemed in pretty bad shape and I felt bad enough to actually call the hospital and give them the information.

 Although the wife never let me do it nor would I have really but always wanted to put a message on for wacko's R US!
