All you zombies hide your faces - for not texting me.  I would've stocked up on Spam, shotgun shells, and DVDs.

A WWZ movie.

It's news to me.

I thought World War Z was a great book, so I'm definitely interested in seeing a movie adaptation.  I'm not sure how they'll be able to cover the sheer scope of the destruction in a single movie, but if they make a fair attempt at it, I think it'll be a blast to see!

I loved the book and it'll be interesting to see how they make the movie from a collection of short stories (essentially, that's what the book is).  The source material would lend itself to a "serious" zombie movie full of drama rather than the gorefest zombie movies we typically see.

I'm avoiding spoilers by trying to be generic in the below examples.  However, don't read any further if you're worried about some sort of spoiler.

If it were me, I'd concentrate on the origin story, the housewife story (and the resulting panic), the New York battle, the Air Force pilot escape and the Army retraining/desert battle.  That would tell a pretty coherent tale.  I think they have two real options - tell the story from the housewife's point of view, or tell it from the military point of view.  I'd love to see the New York battle on big screen - it has the potential to surpass every zombie combat scene in history.

I haven't read it yet, but it sounds like it might be better off as a series on HBO.

My favorite parts were the ones that took place in Japan, but I think your ideas are more likely to end up on the screen.

That's an excellent passage in the book, but I don't think it would translate to a visual medium very well.  New York, however, could be the Mother of All Zombie Battles on the big screen.

Just a heads up the The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks graphic novel is out now. It's basically an anthology where it shows zombie outbreaks over the years - starting with cavemen. The art in the book is really good. Lots of detail and not a wasted frame - which is important as there isn't a whole lot of text here. I went through the book in about an hour and got from it about what I expected.

There's a few memorable stories including a gruesome zombie domino effect aboard a slave ship and a story about some Russian Cossacks that get whats coming to them. But my favorite of the bunch would have to be a story involving the French Foreign Legion who get little warning about an army of undead coming their way. I could see that one being made in to a TV style movie.

If you liked World War Z or the original Survival Guide this is a nice addition to add to the collection.

whoops: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44852868

Quote
Brad Pitt isn't a terrorist but he's certainly being treated like one.

On Monday, a SWAT team raided a Budapest warehouse holding weapons being used in Pitt's upcoming zombie movie "World War Z." "The film is already over budget and over schedule," a source tells Us Weekly. "Brad is furious."

Police seized 85 fully-functional weapons, most of which were automatic, military-style assault rifles. "We can confirm that weapons were confiscated at an airport," Hajdu Janos and Zsolt Bodnar, the director and deputy director of Hungary's Anti-Terrorism Unit, tell Us.

The problem, a source says, is that the guns came with paperwork claiming they were non-functional -- but they're actually in working order.

It takes place over the entire world, but...

Spoiler for Hiden:
People fled to the colder areas like Canada because the zombies would freeze up during the winter.  Of course, many people underestimated the amount of food needed to keep living in a climate where nothing grows for 6 months...

He's rewriting the last third of the screenplay. Apparently they didn't think the movie was screwed up enough so they called him in finish the fuckening.

This is good news for those of us who wanted an ending that incorporated an obtuse reference to some ancient religion using 4th grade logic that allowed the writer to still insinuate to 3rd graders that he was being deep.

The new Lidelof ending:

FADE IN

BRAD PITTS ROOM - NIGHT

Angelina Jolie lays on a perfectly coiffed pillow, hair brushed except for a single lock that crosses her forehead.
Brad Pitt tosses and turns, his forehead slick with sweat. His lips open and close as a nightmare wracks his sleep.

BRAD
(Screaming)

ANGELINA
Brad, what is it? Did you have a nightmare, love?

BRAD
(obviously shaken)
I was on an island and it was filled with the dead. They were everywhere and I couldn't find you. I! couldn't! Find! You!

ANGELINA
It was just a dream, baby, just a dream.

BRAD
(Visibly shaken)
     A dream. Sure.

The bedroom door rattles. It slowly creaks open allowing light to. Tiny fingers scratch at the door frame. They aren't voice, they are keening and crying.

Brad and Angelina clutch each other in bed.

Their 47 children from other countries rush the bed.

BRAD
(horrified face)
Jesus Christ! It was real! The nightmare was reaaaaal - blarghughaphlargh!

FADE OUT

It looks interesting. The whole 'mad-sprinting-raging-ant-zombie' angle could make it an interesting action film. It's not gonna resemble the book at all. I read they had a really hard time retooling the movie in post. The director Marc Foster actually stepped aside so that Pitt could bring his own people (George Clooney included) to retool the film. That doesn't bode well. But.. the CGI looks interesting.

It looks like the only thing they have kept from the book was the name. Brad Pitt is "in a race against time to save the word" ... yikes.

The CGI looks silly. Wouldn't it have looked better to do traditional zombies ala Walking Dead? Not to mention the cost since the movie's budget has soared to 180 million. The zombies remind me of the CGI from I Am Legend.

We will have to deal with a Lidelof ending. Blech.

This is exactly my impression...slapped the title onto a movie that doesn't have anything to do with the book in an effort to cash in on the buzz. I never really understood how they though they could adapt the book anyway...guess they didn't bother to try...

I had the exact same thought when watching it. The CGI for the zombies looks exactly like the vampire CGI in I Am Legend. They move strange and they kinda look greyish and not in the world.

I showed my wife the trailer and she couldn't figure out why all these people were getting shot at. She didn't realize it was a zombie movie till I told her after the trailer. She was like "that's a zombie movie?" So not sure they did a good job with that trailer.

I'll still be watching it.

How do you do adapt WWZ? You do it as a series of vignettes that comprise different perspectives but give insight into the whole global cataclysm...like the book.  It would work great with a good writer.

At the beginning of the trailer I was like yeah! Average Joe Brad Pitt and his family flee for survival. Then it went where all movies like this go- he's an elite soldier or whatever and then I lost interest.

I guess I really need to read wwz.  It's been on my list forever it seems.  The trailer looked intense, but if I hadn't know it was a zombie movie I would not have known at all.
