i hate the horns also, today's matches sounded as though they were being watched by angry swarm of bees

the France and Uruguay match was so-so,it was 0-0 in the end,the best part was that the first red card has been produced of the tourney, with Uruguay going down to 10 men

France and Uruguay was typical 1st round Euro game.  A low-scoring draw.  The Euros always seem to play for the draw early on.

Wow those horns are f*$&in' annoying.  Is it going to be like that every game?  If so I'm glad I didn't buy a new TV to mark the event.  As someone says it's like listening to a group of African killer bees for two hours.  I'm all for noise makers but not a constant barrage like that.

it may be because South Africa have not been playing since that first match or it may be because of the BBC and ITV coverage, but the last few matches, you can hear the noise, but its nowhere near as bad now thankfully

first win of the tourney
South Korea 2-0 Greece

then after that was the return of Diego Maradonna's Argentina

Argentina 1-0 Nigeria

some great saves from the Nigerian Keeper,Lionel Messi could of had a hat trick

2 and a half hrs until England Vs USA

1-1 half time

America have had more possession of the ball(percentage wise)

cock up by our Goalkeeper led to USA's goal

England are at least playing a little better than their warm matches

Heskey gave Tim Howard an injury coming in for the ball, the commentators said he had a right to got for it,which may be true but not studs up(IMO anyway)

James Milner was lucky not to get a red card-his first offense went without a card, second one he got one..he then got substituted

should be a good second half

That might be the softest goal I've ever seen given up at the international level.  A fuck-up of epic proportions by the English keeper.  On the other side, Howard is a freaking stud - plain and simple.

Very entertaining game so far, and it's really been quite even.  Should be a fun second half.

Yeah, Hesky had rights to the ball, but coming in studs up should have drawn a yellow.

Like I said on OO if this game ends in a draw Green will be ripped by the English newspaper

Thanks to Grifman on OO for this find

Subject: World Cup Bet

Mr. Longden,

It has not escaped our attention that a certain sporting event is fast approaching, and that our respective nations will soon be meeting on the fields of South Africa. My Ambassador has asked me to see if your Ambassador might be interested in a small wager? We will understand if you decline, given the outcome of the last such encounter.

Sincerely, Philip Breeden, U.S. Embassy, London

Mr. Breeden,

Even for such an exceptionally optimistic nation as the United States, I am struck by the confidence with which your Ambassador proposes this wager. It is testament, I assume, to the generosity of your great nation - since the British Ambassador does not anticipate paying out.

Your email does not specify the exact terms of the wager. May I suggest that, in the event of an England victory, the US Ambassador agrees to entertain the British Ambassador at a steak-house of his choosing in downtown DC? And in the event that the United States is able to engineer a fortuitous win over England, then my man will entertain yours at a London pub of his choosing. Loser pays.

Your reference to a previous sporting encounter between our two countries puzzles me. Since the history of English football is long and extensive, in contradistinction to US soccer, I regret that I cannot immediately recall the encounter to which you refer. No doubt it is remembered fondly on these shores; we have quite forgotten it, however.

Are you sure you want to do this?

Yours sincerely,

Martin Longden

Mr. Longden ,

It is with great pleasure, and no small measure of anticipation, that the U.S. Ambassador accepts the terms of the wager. I am surprised, given the well known love of the British for history, that you have forgotten what happened the last time the "special relationship" was tested on the pitch. Of course, given the result, you are to be forgiven for having misplaced that particular episode in your memory banks. I refer of course to the victory of the U.S. over England in the 1950 World Cup.

It is true that our soccer (a fine English word we have kindly preserved for you) history is not as long and illustrious as yours. However, as your generals noted during WWII, we have a unique capability for quickly identifying and advancing talent.

Game on!

Sincerely, Philip Breeden

Very well; it's a bet!

Incidentally, you should know that the Ambassador takes his steak like American soccer victories - somewhat rare.

Sincerely,

Martin Longden

LOL,SC good stuff

1-1 FT

for what its worth,i think for both teams we have at least got the worse match of the group out of the way now

1 point each

Algeria and Slovenia(who are both in our group) both play tomorrow,i think it would be best for a draw out of that,so all 4 teams would be on 1 point..and we can start again Tongue

be a turn up if both of us don't qualify,LOL..<< i laugh now.... icon_confused

I do not like soccer.

That being said, it was moving to see these two countries standing across from each other.    Countries that are forever linked by origins, blood, and friendship.

/goes back to American football.

I know squat about soccer, er, football.

But that was a damn enjoyable game. Nice to set the US pull out a tie. Howard is a bad ass goalie. I thought for sure England was going to score in the last 20 minutes or so. Man, they were pushing the action hard.

Awesome picture all the way from South Africa. Amazing.

Algeria has a pretty good track record so I wouldn't count them as super easy. Obviously England should be able to
beat anyone in this group but still.

Italy on the other hand has a super easy group, only Paraguay to worry about.

Glad you enjoyed it, and I agree that it was a very fun game to watch.  One thing I'd suggest for those who may be tuning in for the first time is not to focus just on what's happening around the ball, but try and watch the movement and positioning of all the players.  Once you can start to pick up on some of the off-the-ball nuances, it really does become a fascinating game to watch.

EDIT:i am watching the Slovenia and Algeria match now and there is hardly anybody in the stadium, yet i can still hear those bloody horns

also after the England and USA match last night, they had an after show presented by James Corden* with guest stars Simon Callow and Katy Perry(she was wearing a very tight Great Britain and United states flag dress),and they were talking about how annoying the horns were

*for those of you who don't know who James Corden is(what, all of you?),he will be in an episode of Doctor Who soon(it was on UK screens last night)as the Doctors Flat mate

i knew there were some Dr Who fans here,so that's why i mentioned it,as for James Corden,i don't mind him,i can put with him more than the Little Britain guys

result:-
Algeria 0-1 Slovenia

it means Slovenia go top of our group now,USA play them on Friday and you have to get a win,if Slovenia win there is a good chance they will go through

1-Slovenia 3 pts
2-England  1 pt
2-USA       1 pt
4-Algeria    0 pt

if you draw with Slovenia on Friday, then that would put you guys on 2 points, and Slovenia on 4...that would mean you would have to depend on England to beat Slovenia on the Wednesday after..as long as you guys win Algeria the same day.

In his defense the ball did have some wicked spin on it.  He misjudged it and did not square up behind it but instead came at it from the side and kind of had to swat at it at the last second.  The second bounce really went sideways on him.  Still you gotta make that save.  I feel bad for the guy but.... here in the UK the England Vs USA match was being shown on ITV1,it was also being shown on ITV1 HD

check out this 48 second video of the wrong time to cut to commercials..its when it cuts back to the match that's the funny part

Sky news of course picked up on this story(satellite/cable have SKY Sports 1,2,3 and 4 premium channels but are not aloud to show the matches because they should be made available for everyone..ie Terrestrial channels like BBC and ITV)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCb9UspoP6g

i am glad i was watching it on ITV1(SD)

Germany owning Australia and the dodgy sending off of Cahill is not helping.

straight red for Australia's Tim Cahill...what a joke, and then another player did more or less the same about 5 minutes later and didn't even get a Yellow card, bad decisions from the Ref,although the Ref did look like he belonged in a crypt in Transylvania

i have heard Australia, rightly are going to appeal the red card

Australia however have still got a glimmer of hope,as Ghana did them a big favour by shock defeating Serbia, and Serbia have to play Germany next,so it could be after 2 matches Serbia could still be on 0 pts..and if Australia beat Ghana..it would be that final match Australia Vs Serbia to who goes through

the aftershow World cup thing again on ITV were talking about this and were laughing about it,they had an American on the show and they asked her is it was true that the front pages said 'America wins 1-1'(they didn't have this picture)...and she replied if its the New York Post then probably

LOL,good stuff

Don't people remember those horns from the confederations cup last year? Everyone was complaining about them then. I don't even understand how can enjoy a game when you are blowing a horn the entire time.

Beginning to think Australia is cursed at the World Cup. Last time the dodgy penalty for Italy in the dying minutes of their knockout match. This time the red card for Cahill which effectively kills our chances of making it out of the group unless it gets overturned on appeal. Germany was the better side today and absolutely deserved their win. But Cahill absolutely didn't deserve to get sent off like that.

That was definitely not red card worthy.

So, with Bendtner out, I fear today will go very poorly for Denmark....well, even with him in, it would have gone very poorly I feared... Here's hoping we can beat Cameroon and go through with Netherlands!

Not that I hope Denmark does badly in this WC slywink.
