So, someone is defacing the Wikipedia page of the candidate I'm working for in 2008, putting up misinformation and outright lies about her. I'm having to take this stuff down time and time again each day -- six times on Friday, three times yesterday, twice today. I've emailed Wikipedia, asking them to do something about the user who is defacing the page.

It appears they may have blocked him from editing the page, because now he's doing it while not logged in -- just his IP address is showing. My questions, if anyone knows the answer:

1) Can I get Wikipedia to lock the page completely, no edits by anyone?

2) Can I use his IP address to track down his ISP? Or to track down the individual himself?

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answers!

Dunno much about Wikipedia, but you can get a decent amount of info on the IP by using the tools on this page:

in 20 years they'll probably have the technology to easily modify live video and have the candidates humping a dead moose on FOX News.

Mind you,  we don't think it's the Republicans doing this. We believe it's one of the Department employees my candidate let go (ie, "allowed" to retire) after she won in 2004. There's a group of these folks who've spent the last two and a half years feeding bad stories (often with misinformation) to the local press, and it looks like one of 'em has found the wonders of the Internet.

Mookee has pointed you in the right direction, and the answer is yes: there are a few different levels of protection that can be placed on a Wikipedia page to deter or outright prevent editing.  They're typically temporary, but hopefully the vandal will get bored and go away.

Can you tell us who your candidate is?

My candidate's already got the press after her for things that aren't her fault. The last thing I'm going to do is be dishonest and actually give them a legitimate reason to target us!

If they are leaving their IP, that isn't all that bright.  You can track them down right to a physical location that way (some are easier than others, however).

especially considering how easy it is to get anonymous proxies.

got this off the consumerist:  a searchable db of anon wiki edits.  it may not be useful to this case, but if you wonder who is doing what without telling anyone, here you go.

As far as dealing with people screwing up Wikipedia... you are not alone.

Hmm... lots of related stories on this are going to start popping up, it seems.  Here is a good one, in case anyone thought that news outlet actually had any credibility.

Her page is now on the Wikipedia watch list, and it appears that the vandalism has stopped. My latest reversion of the page to the pre-vandalism state has stuck for several days now.

The guys doing this aren't the most technically astute. Having their account banned probably spooked 'em.

It's not our opponent (we don't have a primary opponent anymore, and there are three Republicans more focused on each other right now). We know the general group that is doing this... when my candidate was elected, she had to prune her office of some folks who wouldn't go along with the new order of things. They were allowed to retire, and have since been chewing the ears of newspaper reporters, et al, about how my candidate is doing things all wrong, etc, etc, etc.

In any case, I don't have any intention to do negative campaigning. As a general rule, negative campaigns are very poor at turning out Democratic votes. And my candidate is very proud that she never went negative in her initial race. She's a much better person than I am.

I had a nuclear bomb ready for our potential primary opponent. Fortunately, we won't have to even debate whether or not to use it now.

That's cool, glad it worked out.  I don't personally like pissing contests either, but it never hurts to have the tools in the toolbox.
