Due to the nature of our business (our customers take very few days off), we only get the "big" holidays off and we used to get 2 floating holidays. A couple of years ago we got Columbus Day added to our days off and they took away one of our floating holidays. Most of us thought this was ridiculous because it was likely that none of our customers were taking the day off. I finally found out the other day that the reason this happened was that "some people" wanted the day off because schools tended to close. Which I imagine means that someone with sufficient power wanted to take the day off but was getting interrupted by people who hadn't taken the day off. Lame.

So does anyone else have Monday off?

I don't, but most of my clients have Monday off.  Will be a nice day to get caught up on things without having to make a million sales calls.

Despite working for a company that serves exclusively banks, I will not be getting the day off.  We lost Columbus Day in return for MLK day for school many moons ago.  My father, however, being management on a AFB contract, will get the day off, which he has parlayed with 4 days vacation into an entire week off.

I work directly for a bank and don't get the day off.

I know federal employees get the day off...Cal state employees might, I understand the union says they do and the government says they don't...at least that's what the last news article I saw said...

very few private employers will be giving that day off...

This weekend is the Thanksgiving weekend in Canada - hey it's colder here in most parts of the country, so yah gotta harvest earlier. It's a statutory holiday, so I think almost everyone here gets the day off. The best thing about having Thanksgiving earlier, is that it's too early for the retailers to make it into something like Black Friday. slywink

I haven't had a paid day off, or even spent a day doing no work at all, in 4 years. I probably won't work more than a couple of hours on Monday, though, unless the Christmas shoppers turn up in force.

As a state worker I have the first 3 fridays off unpaid each month.  This Monday is Columbus day.  We used to get that off paid.  Early this year during our contract talks Arnold took away this holiday and Lincolns Holiday.  These holidays were given to us in the past in lieu of a pay raise.  So with the furloughs, we are earning 15% less, and now we lose our two holidays.    However because the governor has failed to sign our new contract with the Union, we automatically revert back to our old contract, which gives us those two holidays back.  The governor disagrees, and the union and the governor is still fighting this.

Myself, while I hate the governor, I don't trust him, and will be going to work.  The worst case scenerio I get paid normal time, if not, time and a half if they rule it is a holiday that we should get paid for.  I don't trust the governor, he already shown he'll use state workers as pawns (see furloughs)

Next week is a scheduled one day mandatory furlough day. So I am thinking Monday just might be that day.

The pharmacy is closed exactly two days of the year (Christmas Day and New Years Day), so no, it's business as usual where I work. Or are we closed for only Christmas Day... Frankly, I've forgotten.

Holiday talk always bugs me because there are so few in retail and service industries anymore.  Most places are down to Christmas, at best, as the only day they are closed anymore.  And yet it seems like there is this belief that everyone is a white collar worker who works 9-5 M-F with major holidays off type jobs.  Meanwhile,  a huge chunk of the workforce is now in service jobs where such a schedule and lifestyle no longer exist.  So while some of you have a three day weekend, a lot of us are actually going to work to make sure you can eat at restaurants and buy your groceries and get taken care of at the hospital on your "holiday" or "weekend."

So have fun but remember that for a lot of people a "holiday" is simply another work day where we (hopefully) are getting paid a little more (but probably aren't).

I have most of the day off.  I work for a bank, but have to be on call or actually work if I have client meetings when the market is open.  Thankfully, I only have 1 early meeting Monday morning at 8:00, and after that I'm off!

you cook up a goose instead of a turkey, and have a moose pie for desert.
