Well, best I can tell it is sort of Google's idea of the future of email. When you send someone a message, you create a wave. People can then add on to that wave with other messages, but also with pictures, video, whatever. At any time, another person can be added to the conversation and play back everything that has happened since the beginning.
I think that is the most basic use of it. There is a 1 hour video where they go over the features, but I haven't had time to watch it yet.

It's basically more tightly integrated services from what I can understand. Google Docs and the like would be more tightly integrated into Gmail.

How about using it to role-play?

A bunch of us GT'ers have got a pretty good wave going-just testing things out. I think that Wave will be one of those things that won't be awesome until everyone has it. Gmail was awesome from the very first beta because it wasn't dependent on anyone else having it. Once it becomes ubiquitous (I hope that it will) it will be fucking awesome!! Basically your own personal forum where you can add anyone you want and start up threads about organizing a big barbeque in two months time or hey guys, lets get together and buy mom and dad a new computer for Christmas. But it won't be awesome unless everyone uses it so in that spirit, I am offering invites to others (I was invited by someone else a month ago and I just received 16 invites of my own) and hopefully we can help perpetuate it.
I've got 11 of 16 left. Send me a PM with your email addy/

I have one and like most people here I opened it a couple times and then ignored it. Since it doesn't mesh with current email you can only talk to people who have Wave accounts so it gets pretty dull.
It feels like a forum really except not anyone can join...bit woop.

I don't think there is much to do with it yet. As people get invited and start using it I can see it turning in to a useful conversation tool. Part of the invite program from what I can see is to get early adopters to start clicking around to see what breaks and what new features (Gmail integration) need to be added. I don't use much of it, and many features need to be added but I think it is a cool idea.
