I was reading through the "5 sci-fi inventions which would suck" thread, and it occurred to me that, perhaps like the internet or social networking, it would be one of those things which really "wow" people who are new to it, but may seem like no big deal to people who can take it for granted.

So in other words, we would be the ones having zero-g adventures with Salma Hayek and Scarlett Johansson, while people who never knew a world without a holodeck might give the whole thing a big "meh".

So what would everyone be doing with their own personal deck?  I'd probably pull a Matrix, "I know Kung-Fu", move, and just spend a lot of my time learning more about martial arts and getting better.  Real life (or mine, at least) just doesn't give you enough opportunity to practice, or practice against people who are good.

I have a feeling I'd fine myself spending an inordinate amount of time in the Crimson Skies universe.

Probably waste most of my time modding and tweaking it, while reading forums about what others have done with their holodecks instead of just playing in my own.

There's a few books that I'd love to recreate and explore in person.

I would create a 'chair tipping backwards almost to the point of falling but not quite' simulator so that I would be living on the edge at every possible moment of existence.

My backup would be the Assassinate Paris Hilton simulator- think Hitman...only in a holodeck and the target is always Paris or Lindsey or some other young idiot...

That, and be the first astronaut, firefighting, heavy metal band frontman, president and superhero all in one.  That would rule like nothing else.  That, and of course, have millions of Scarlet Johansen groupies.  drool

Try very hard not to become addicted.

Imagine if a MMO (or text-based RPG, either way) was tied into a group holodeck.  eek

I used to have a lot of ideas, but ever since reading the spoof article about the Holodeck cleaner and his vengeance on Commander Riker I'm a little hard pressed to actually consider owning one any more.

How I remember that article. I had to stop reading it at work as it was just too damn funny.

Play every role I like in every opera I like.  (In space, no one can hear me scream).

Plus, all the roles in all the plays that I like.

Finally, I think LARP would become sufficiently non-ridiculous to try.  Lightening bolt!  Lightening bolt!

But I perceive many moral hazards.

Me:  [Coming out of holodeck]:  Oh, hi, dear.

Wife:  What were you doing?

Me:  You know, another silly opera.

Wife:  Which one?

Me:  Uh ... Tannhauser.

Wife:  [Looking at my sweat pants and T-shirt]  You aren't costumed for it.

Me:  It's a very minimalist production.

Wife:  Really.  You look sweaty.

Me:  Well, that first act bit where Tannhauser invokes the Blessed Virgin to escape from Venusburg is kind of a workout.

Wife:  Uh-huh.  Come here.  I'm going to smell you.

Me:  I beg your pardon.

Wife:  Come here.

Me:  No.  You can't smell me.  Hey!  Get away from my crotch!

Wife:  You were humping that holo-Venus, weren't you?

Me:  No!  No!  It's not true!

Wife:  Really?  Ok.  Let's go.  Right now.

Me:  Uhmm .. sure!  Great.  Totally sexy.  Uh.. I have to make a call.  Give me fifteen minut....uh, two hours.

I would do to Michael Vick everything he did to those poor dogs.  I hate animal cruelty and that c*cksucker would suffer.   Like the poor dog name Anne in Alabama that was skinned alive from the neck to the tail.  Those f*ckers would have done to them EXACTLY what they inflicted.  Over and over and over.

On a lighter side, I would explore the universe, skim the surface of every planet in our solar system, and zip through space seeing the incredible beauty and mystery that undoubtably awaits.
