The DVD thread got me thinking.  I don't remember my first DVD, but I remember my first CD: The Wallflowers' "Bringing Down the Horse."  (Don't laugh.)  What was yours?

I remember this one clearly.  I bought 2 CD's that day:

Metallica: Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

My first CD was a X-Mas present, and it was Mariah Carey's first album. Apparently my mom overheard me saying 'Carey is hot' and thouht I meant it as in popular.  My first CD purchase from exchanging it was GnR: Use Your Illusion I.

My first album was a Blood, Sweat and Tears album. I can picture the album but I can't remember the name. I played trumpet in those days.

I'm going to have to think about this one because I'm having a hard time remembering. I think I got my first CD player in like 1990 (part of a stereo system my parents got me), but I was kind of against the concept. I didn't like that I couldn't record to them, and I was hoping that DAT was going to overtake it (insert LOL). I kept buying cassette tapes long after I had a CD player partly because of this mindset, and also because they were a lot cheaper. You could also get a ton of cassettes through Columbia House (the deal gave you like 12-15 albums for the price of 1), while you'd only get a couple of CDs when they started being offered.

First semester of college in '91 I basically became a CD shopaholic, though. I think Achtung Baby was when I started buying CDs in earnest, but I had a few others before then.

Cassettes would have been the columbia house years - I'll throw the first Poison major release out there as a guess, I don't recall the name. Actually I'm trying to decide if I started getting cassettes before or after we got MTV. I'm pretty sure it was after.

CDs... umm... Debbie Gibson maybe? I was a kid in the sticks with access to one radio station that wasn't country, leave me alone. I probably had 40 or 50 CDs before I ever owned a CD player. College roommate's stereo came in handy.

Yeah, it's been a rocky road for me musically.

i bought myself a portable CD player(Sanyo i think it was,LOL)...it came with two CDs..one was an 80s CD,with only two songs out of 15 or so that i heard of on there,(Huey Lewis and the News-The Power Of Love,Ultravox-Vienna)..and the other CD(which i am quite proud of)..was The Blues Brothers Soundtrack,damn fine soundtrack


first Cassette was Michael Jackson Bad

Pretty sure it was Pink Floyd: The Wall. I seem to recall it was like $40 too as it was 2 CDs and this was back when cassette players were in high use and records starting to go on their way out.

Or it could have been one of The Cure albums "Head on the Door" or "Standing on a Beach/Staring at the Sea: The Singles". I do recall the later album was pretty neat as the record, cassette and CD had 1 song that didn't appear on the others. At least back in 86' I thought that was pretty neat.

I got into CDs late and joined a mail-order club with the intention of replacing my album collection as cheaply as possible. I started with greatest hits compilations from artists whose full albums weren't important to me. I can't tell you which one was first, or what my first "original" (non-replacement) CD was, but I remember putting a high priority on David Bowie and Peter Gabriel-era Genesis.

the first vinyl I got was a birthday present.  I got both Jethro Tulls AquaLung and Thick as a Brick.   The 1st CD I ever owned was The Who's Quadrophenia.     I have all three in digital now and still enjoy listening to them.

Led Zepplin - Houses of the Holy which in turn made me go and get every single Led Zepplin album on CD there after. I had never heard them before. I was 13 and it was 1992. My head nearly exploded at the awesomness that just got better the most albums I got.

I never had vinyl, but I had several cassettes, first one I ever bought with my own money was Pearl Jam - Ten, second cassette I think was Nirvana - Nevermind . My taste in music got better from there.

Alice in Chains - Dirt. I didn't have a CD player, but I knew my brother was getting one for Christmas. I still remember the first time we put a CD in as a family and all sat around it marveling at the sound quality and lack of tape hiss.

God I feel old.
