I think the style I was expecting from the article was more along the lines of the Cracked Top X lists.  They're semi-vulgar, but not necessarily low-brow.

Again, I didn't mind the tone or style of the article at all.  Low brow and juevenille but not unlike a lot of the games we enjoy out there folks.  However, I took great exception to entry #2.  There is just absoloutly nothing humerous about that game or rape/pediophiles.  Nothing.  It's just not really something to joke about imo.  I wasn't aware that custer's revenge was about trying to rape 10 year olds?  So unless I am mistaken you can't really claim that they have the same premise but maybe I am wrong?

"And this time she’s 10. So no grass, more tears and more reasons for your girlfriend to file a restraining order"

Really?  Is that neccessary?  If I had written that i nthe forums I would imagine I would be asked to edit it out.

I'm trying to come up with something other than the usual 'Top 10' bull I see on other sites.  Clearly we missed the mark on this one.   We'll regroup and try again and see where we go from there.

heck I think the same premise would probably work if you stuck to games that dont' have the sex as their primary focus.  ME, ME2, GTIV could all have been games to include along with the DoA series.  Heck, just do a forum search for games Starshifter has said he wants to get slywink

Ron,

While I may be the minority here, I wouldn't go so far as saying that you completely missed the mark.  While a more subtle approach could have made the article a tad more palatable, it was quite a departure from the normal front page fodder.  There are those who found the article tongue-in-cheek, regardless how crass it was written.  Some people don't find such approach humorous in the least bit, as is evident by some of the responses, but I don't think anything of it for trying.

Tyler, my apologies for bringing up your girlfriend and making her a possible target of misguided comments.  While my comment was supposed to be more of an inside-joke for those of us that know you personally, it was misconstrued and misused.  That was never my intention.

From the title of the article, I was expecting a list of games that I might want to play, but probably shouldn't if the girlfriend's around.   Instead I got a list of games I never want to play at all- and if someone else is around or not doesn't enter into it.

I haven't read the article but I think that would be my opinion as well.  As to why I did not read the article... How about a NSFW tag on it, since anything posted on the forum like that would have people screaming.

There's plenty of NSFW on the first page of the article.  From the damn near nude shot from DoA to the quote I posted earlier. It's hard to go more than two consecutive sentences on the first page without coming across something NSFW slywink

Everyone is different, obviously, but, the two female gamer friends that I showed that article to were very offended/pissed off by the very sexist tone they got from it.

That's not a huge sample, but, since we don't have too many female members to the site, and from my experience there are a lot of female gamers out there, it may be something to consider.

Rick,
No problem whatsoever. In fact, thank you. I appreciate the joke and I think it's good for people to know that reasonable people out there are able to see something for what it is.
We need to hang out. It's been too long. Maybe we could hit up a confessional or something.

I'll ask Moriarty to post (may be under my tag since she can't remember her password for some reason) with editorial advice/critique when she is awake.

I have no problems with trying a new style of article, but, I think that if you are going for humor/satire on a site that does not normally use that style, it is important to leave no doubt of the intention.  Including a tag on the banner for the article 'Humorous/Satirical/etc.' would go a long way towards avoiding misunderstanding. Especially when the article in question is put in the same spot as every other 'regular' article on the site.

Read as humor, the article isn't nearly as offensive, but, with no indication that it is meant for humor, it can be taken at face value fairly easily.  At which point the clash with the rest of the main page's content is even more stark.  If it had been more clearly marked, I probably would have read the first paragraph or so and shrugged it off while wandering off to the forums.  As it was, I read the whole thing wondering how/why it was posted on Gaming Trend.

Another factor that probably plays into this is the age skew of a lot of the forum members.

At any rate, it is easy to see you aren't going to please everyone no matter what you write smile

No big deal for me, and certainly preferable to another bullshit vanilla "list" article.  It seemed a bit short and truncated overall, and RapeLay getting so much detail made it stand out.  It didn't make me question my morals or those of the staff, and more of the same wouldn't affect my site visitation, but then again black humor is pretty no-holds-barred for me personally.  "What's the best thing about making love to twenty two year olds?"
I don't particularly care for the density of the "how many UrbanDictionary entries for 'sperm' can I pack into a paragraph" style of writing, but it's valid and popular.  I'd have recommended using lots of pictures of those volleyball games to go more for titillation than outright perversion, which will repel many people regardless of other content.
The editing seemed fine.

BTW, the article got me thinking about what my list would look like.   Here's what I came up with.  Hope no one minds...

5. Bloodrayne - Do you really want your girlfriend watching as you control a hot red headed vampire hybrid to wrap her legs around every man she sees and hickey him to death while making sexy sucking noises?

4. The Sims  - Remember how mad your little sister was when you 'hung' her favorite doll from the ceiling with twine, or posed her Barbies in naughty positions?  This is the same reaction you'll get from your girlfriend when she sees how you play The Sims.  Then she'll try to convince you that the game didn't intend for you to be able to force your sims into the pool and remove the exit stairs, or for you to lock your sims in dark rooms with no bathroom or food until they die.

3. Heavy Metal FAKK2 - Good luck trying to convince her that there's some redeeming quality to this aging sci-fi action game beyond the fact that the main character is modeled after Penthouse Pet Julie Strain.

2. Grand Theft Auto  - This almost goes without saying.  And while you know you'll never do it in real life, there's something about how when a game lets you beat down a hooker to get your money back after she performs her services that you just have to do it.

1. Solitaire - Stop me if this sounds familiar:
"Oh, you've got that red 4 that can go on the black 5."
"I saw that I was just saving it for lat--"
"Oh, Ace! You can  move it up top!"
"Yeah, give me a cha--"
"God, you're going too slow.  Give me the mouse."

Hated the article.  I like to think GT represents a little more mature audience than the tone of the writing.  The subject is fine, but the style was something I expect out of a high-school kid.

You're doing it wrong.  I just back over them, then get out to get the money.  No pesky melee to worry about.

Add me to the group who felt the style was inappropriate.  I get the humorous intent, but someone who is not familiar with GT or the author would easily miss that.  As for the use of RapeLay, I don't necessarily have a problem with using it as an example, but spending so much time on it compared to the other games (almost twice as many lines) really makes it seem like it was intended to be the highlight title.

Yeah that was one of my issues as well.

All in all - what is the point of the article?  It's not particularly interesting or covers any particular ground that hasn't been covered before.  Was the point just to be controversial?  I'm trying to find what series of goals were set where the writer, reviewers, and editors all said 'Yeah OK, this is a winner.  Post it.'  Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing something terrible.

Something different?  Experimentation?  The intent was more humorous than anything. Sometimes it is better to have tried and failed than not have tried at all.

I think the biggest issue here is one of context. This was meant to be a satirical/ humorous piece. We could have done better to point that out (though for the life of me I can't see how anybody would take that tone seriously. Lesson learned.)

Point of fact- We haven't done a lot of in-house content other than reviews and previews. We are looking at trying to diversify that content with op-ed and humor pieces. We are experimenting.  We get a ton of traffic to our front page (a lot more than many of you realize) and to our reviews, and we're trying to figure out how we can get some of that traffic to look around the site a bit more.  To that end we will continue experimenting and refining new types of content.

to misquote a comedian...

oh sure digital flesh - you can flambay, maim, shoot, burn, torture, slice, dice and dismember it...

but as soon as you make it 16 years old and stick your station wagon sized penis in it, NOW everyone has a problem

and am i the only one who found this article sliiiiiiiiightly humorous, but cringes every time im forced to sit through an episode of csi while a bunch of                40-somethings talk about the amount of semen in some murdered womans vagina, while deadpanning on the horrific injuries sustained when she vainly attempted to fight off her assailant?  with slo-mo high-detail close-ups???

pr0ner,
Awaiting constructive criticism objective in nature...

I'm not pr0ner, but I'll give it a start.

Quote
For the most part, girls are cool with us gaming.

Since you're dealing with females old enough to be dating and dealing with sexual imagery, you should use 'women' here.  Using 'us' implies you are speaking for the male gaming community.  I would suggest 'their boyfriends' to maintain a more objective tone.

Quote
They understand the kick from a good battle and they normally don’t get too offended by our chub for the next big release.

You need a comma before the conjunction.  'Chub' is slang and unprofessional.

Quote
It’s simply the price they pay for making us listen to hour-long diatribes about whatever sordid reality show they watched last night, along with all the tortuous in-law time and shitty chick flicks.

This is grammatically incorrect.  Everything after 'for' should be parallel.  I'd suggest you fix it by adding some actions before 'time' and 'flicks.'  Perhaps 'demanding' and 'watching' would work.  'Shitty' is vulgar and unprofessional.

Quote
“Sorry honey. I’d rather drop acid and fight a bear than see the new Twilight movie with you.”

As a joke, this falls flat.  It also contradicts the next sentence.  It's unclear whether you are unwilling to 'give,' or if you are claiming her demands are unreasonable.

Quote
Like most things in life, it’s give and take.

This would work better if you removed the quote line entirely.  'It's' should be close enough to the implied noun to be clear.

Quote
And the fruits of this reciprocity can be beautiful, especially when redeemed with the opportunity to decapitate someone with their own dismembered arm, all while some chick with triple Ds cheers you on.

This is a run on sentence.  If you make it clear that you've moved from reality to virtual reality, the term 'chick' is not as derogatory as it otherwise would be.

Quote
The release is divine and we’re glad our special ladies comply.

You need a comma before the conjunction.  The taste of the sexual imagery is questionable.

Quote
We beat our chests. They warm our spot in bed. Good deal.

Is this the same reciprocity you were speaking about earlier?  This could easily be viewed as demeaning to women.

We're two paragraphs in, and I haven't found a coherent thesis.  The points are poorly organized and supported.  The casual tone and vulgarity fail to match the tone of the rest of the site.

I don't want to pile on the author.  To me, this smacks of poor editing.  The article seems to be a good faith effort to achieve a nebulous goal.  It needed to be hammered into shape.  I'm sorry Ron.  I think you've embarrassed this author and your site with a lack of due diligence.

Then maybe you should have shown it to women whose taste are more mainstream. I'm sure your gut reaction to my saying that is something along the lines of "fuck your puritan mainstream ideals!", but the fact of the matter is you're writing on a website that is trying to be (if it isn't already there) mainstream. This is the type of article you see on a tiny niche adult gaming website that might have porn banners on it. Everything from content to style to the quality of editing smacks of amateur. I don't get why the reaction from the staff in this thread (with the major exception of KD) is to tell everyone who didn't like the article that they didn't understand the meaning or purpose of it. We're a fairly intelligent group here and I'm pretty sure we all got what you were going for. You just failed.

How about a 3d6 list?   Your average would be 10.5 per roll, but with the potential with lists anywhere from 3 to 18.

Add me to the group not feeling it...for reasons stated by others.

I'm not piling on, but yeah the article didn't do it for me.  I like the idea of trying to be "humorous" but once you read the article, it was really in poor taste.  So I'm for the change idea, just not in that direction smile

I don't get why the reaction from the staff in this thread (with the major exception of KD) is to tell everyone who didn't like the article that they didn't understand the meaning or purpose of it.

Since I'm the only other staff member who chimed in I believe you are referring to me. My statement was that we didn't make the meaning or purpose clear.

I finished reading the article feeling like I should have my virus scanner do a full system scan.

Also, how was there no mention of charging your beam katana in No More Heroes?

Going beyond the clumsy writing and flat humor, the tone borders on misogynistic, and perpetuates the tired 'us vs. them' conflict.

The actual content was the least of the grievances (RapeLay excluded).

And this I look forward to seeing. As has been said in the past - you always have to start somewhere.

I look forward to seeing what you guys do next month (or whenever). As long as it's not as crude as this month's was, I think it'll be well worth the read.

I'm guessing '6 female video game characters and 9 way we'd do each of them' is pretty much out at this point.....

This is a much more concise way of saying what I was trying to say earlier in the thread. smile This is one of those rare times where, the more I think back on the article, the more troubled I am by it. Frankly, I'd be more embarassed to read the article in front of my fiancee than to play some of the games listed in it in front of her.

I wasn't offended by the subject, but the games discussed were all over the place, the title didn't fit the content, and some of the humor would've embarrassed a 90s issue of Maxim.

And I'm no law-talky guy, but couldn't one of those games have you sleeping somewhere much more unpleasant than the couch should US law enforcement ever have occasion to take a stroll through your computer?  That shouldn't stop it from being discussed, but it makes its inclusion in the article seem even odder to me.
