I'm interested to know what the community thinks of our most recent article on the front page.  I've gotten pretty mixed reviews.

I liked the idea and think it could have been a fun article, but it seems like it ended up being a bit more over the top vulgar than anticipated in the fairly graphic descriptions and inclusion of games that were either underground porn versions (Custer's) or pure porn (RapeLay).

Think that type of article content probably belongs more on Cracked or Collegehumor than on GT.  Doesn't seem like the kind of content a lot of publishers would want associated with and I think that's pretty important for the site.

Appreciate you asking for opinions though, even if it's in the wrong forum. slywink  Hope your mods don't move you to Forum and Site Feedback! lol

I agree. There's a place for that style of article, and GT just isn't it. I view GT as more of a community-driven but still legitimate (loaded term; would take a while for me to explain) gaming news and review site. Not something that fits the Maxim/Cracked/College-Humor style of content.

I think it's mostly harmless fun for a Valentines Day article (or maybe it was just coincidental that it was posted yesterday) but I'd have left #2 off the list altogether and gone with something like Erotic Chess instead.

No coincidence.  The idea is that we'd have something in this vein about once a month, but I want to hear from the community first.

I thought it was hilarious. While I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea, it's refreshing to see something different on the homepage.  I guess maybe you could tone it down a bit for the more sensitive ones out there?

On a side note, I know Tyler and his girlfriend personally, and I doubt she would have much of an issue with him playing these games.

I'd actually like to append my earlier post with a specific note about #2 on the list, agreeing with CeeKay's comment.

The article was low-brow for the site as it was, but the #2 entry on the list went from "crass humor" to "fucking creepy". Honest-to-goodness virtual rape and pedophilia just really aren't something I come to GT to read about.

I had no particular problem with the games mentioned, since I like finding out about all the strangeness that gaming has to offer.  The writing, however, was definitely too low-brow.  It took what could have been an interesting piece and made me feel like I was hanging out with a drunken frat boy elbowing me and pointing at the TV going "hey, look at the knockers on that slut".  It felt really out of place with the rest of the site.

So in summation, keep the topic, change the style.

That's what I think as well. Certain things can be discussed on a site like this without raising eyebrows, and the article as a whole came close to the limit. Once #2 was on there though...that was way too over the top.

On the flip side, #1 doesn't seem that bad anymore in comparison now. And I've known about that 'game' for years.  crybaby

I liked the style as a once the month type tongue in cheek article.  I think there is room for that here but maybe tone it down slightly.  That being said, the rapelay section was totally unexpected and dissapointing to say the least.  It wasn't funny and brought nothing to the article excpet shock factor.  I'm not sure GT really wants to show up in google when somebody searches for rape and/or pediophile games.  I would remove asap.

I'm sorry to all of the offended readers out there.

RapeLay was presented exactly as is, a despicable “game” that should be avoided and should be seen as nothing more than interactive smut.
While preparing for the piece, seemingly every search for, “most offensive video game ever” had RapeLay at the top. So I went with it.

Yes there were crass descriptions, double entendres and maybe too much real estate given to it altogether, but there was an effort to explain the fact that this was gaming at its extreme. And that extreme is very very unhealthy for everyone.

Making light of rape is bad and I'm sorry if anyone took it as that. I was hoping to expose the pieces of shit who do. But alas, this was a humor piece and that's a dangerous line. Some think I crossed it, others don't.

The point for its inclusion was to exhibit this extreme and speak to its moral depravity, albeit with comedy. And everyone knows and loves to joke about Custer's Revenge. RapeLay demonstrates the tragic evolution, and having that juxtaposition could show that maybe a silly cartoon can fuel a dangerous progression. (Both games have the same premise, right?)

Pardon my sense of humor. I'm not going to sit here and tell the detractors to lighten up, but please understand that I've been asked to try something different for the site. Something that may jolt a few. But I hope it's known that what I've done does not represent GT as a whole and that these off-color subjects will be handled separately from GT’s flagship style. I appreciate the opportunity and I appreciate any well-meaning criticism.

***Regarding – SensuousLettuce's "Classy broad" comment...
My “Classy broad” and I live a lovely life together. Some say she's a lot like a young Betty White. She's cute, sweet and has an eclectic sense of humor that allows her enjoy all kinds of things that may fall out of the realm of orthodox decency. I mainly read(lurk) the forums but I have to admit it was a pleasant surprise to see something different other than review/preview/regurgitated press release items on the main page. Also, I have seen/read worse, low brow type content in the forums from our members. Just saying.

That someone is a graduate writing student or a professional writer doesn't mean, by default, that said someone is *good* at writing (or critiquing it for that matter).  Cat with barrel of gun up ass?  They let that slide?  Really?

There are more grammatical flubs in the article, but at this point, there is no need to discuss them.

there are ways to talk about something that is vulgar without being vulgar yourself.  I think what stuck out to me was the detail and tone of the #2 entry moreso than what the game itself was about.  Merely mentioning that the game was about incest and rape and what the goals were would be enough to get the point across without all the details.

having said that, my biggest problem with the list is that #2 doesn't even fit in.  Of course you shouldn't play a game that is clearly porn in front of someone who might be offended by porn.  The other games barring Custer's are at least 'normal' games that are at least semi-mainstream.  That's like making a list of movies that you might not want to sit down to with on a first date and including a porn in a list with movies like Sin City that might otherwise be offensive to a woman.

The choice of #2 just seemed odd with the tone of the rest of the choices. If you just wanted a list of 7 games that were offensive I'm sure you can find other games just like RapeLay and have one in each slot slywink

I also didn't care for the pepper grinder comment since it seemed to be a bit more immature than the type of stuff I personally think should be on the front page of a professional gaming site.  The type of low brow vulgar humor in the article just isn't what I go to a gaming site for, it's what I would go to a humor site for.  The article overall came across as very juvenile to me both in tone and content.

credits to you Tyler for jabbin ATB with the BW reference though slywink
I'm all for adding some sort of humorous article each month and I think the actual premise of this article was pretty good, I just think the execution failed for me.

Her crotch is a dust bowl and you can forget about that naughty anniversary present that costs her nothing but dignity.

really?  that's the kind of writing we want to bring to the site? That's ignoring all the porn quality details (stucco her face for example) that are simply unneeded

I'm trying to come up with something other than the usual 'Top 10' bull I see on other sites.  Clearly we missed the mark on this one.   We'll regroup and try again and see where we go from there.
