This has worked well before (with "Human Centipede", for example), so lets try this some more, shall we? I don't like the gorier side of horror films, but I'm always intrigued by their storylines. Also, there are a lot of bad horror movies. So, I figure, just let PR_GMR watch them all, since he likes to anyway.

I ran across this movie called "Growth" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1300159/
It is in the genre of movie most likely to give me the willies, the "creepy crawly thing that goes into people's bodies" genre. So, PR_GMR, go see it. Who am I kidding, he probably already has.

One that I have not, and will not watch is Subconcious Cruelty.

Don't even search for it.

Bunch of yellow cowards in this thread. I've watched 'Human Centipede' 1, 2, and 'A Serbian Film'. I've watched 'AntiChrist' 3 times. I've watched 'Transformers 3' three times (take that, hep!). I will search for 'Growth' and 'Subconcious Cruelty' and ace thru them, easily.  nod

Sadly, I've all but given up on modern horror movies.  I spend my time wading through 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's films, it's an endless pool really.

It's like watching a guy repeatedly shoot himself in the leg while screaming "TAKE THAT!" at passerbys.

There are quite a few good ones out there.  It's just that they seem to be coming from outside America.

Yep, the French particularly make some nasty stuff, I'll usually give those a go.

'Martyrs', 'Frontier(s)', and 'Inside (L'Interior)'. All great.. for all you scary-kat moviegoers looking to grow some hair on your chest.  nod

I really, really liked Martyrs.  I'm not a fan of gore for gore's sake, but the story itself was so interesting that I understood the need for it.  Frontiers was also good, but not as good as Martyrs.  And Inside just didn't click with me.  I didn't hate it, but it doesn't come to mind when I think of good French horror films.

There was a french horror film on netflix streaming a while ago called Sheitan.  I think it's no longer available though.  But man, that was one messed up movie.  I'm a fan of Vincent Cassel and I still can't say whether or not I recommend that one.   icon_confused

If you want to see a reasonably decent, recent horror film of the supernatural variety, try to rent the bargain-budgeted ($1.5M!) Insidious, which I quite enjoyed in theaters, and which enjoyed a remarkably long, profitable box office run.

You might also want to check out The Descent (2005), which I think has a few fans here. Most people would suggest the finale makes a mistake -- turning away from the effective creepiness and mystery into, well, something far less subtle. I would skip the much lesser sequel.

My brother and I saw the indy horror film "The Silent House" recently. While it's "twist" is ultimately sick, it's more the concept than any sort of gore/FX. Until then, it's a "locked inside a house" creep-fest that works up to a certain point.

I think there are plenty of modern horror gems out there. Unfortunately, the stuff that spawn endless sequels (most of them, with occasional exceptions, crappy) and do insane box office for a couple weeks, like Saw, Hostel, Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project, etc. tend to make the smaller gems harder to find.

I find it a shame that modern horror films seem obsesssed with twist endings, or shock, uber-violent endings. imho, too many spend about 70-80% building up suspense effectively through other means and then they decide "oh no, this won't appeal to the Saw/Hostel or maybe Blair Witch/Paranormal Activity crowds, so we've gotta add in a bunch of footage or a shock ending that doesn't fit with the rest of the film at all."

Although I believe Romanian, one of my all time favorites that nobody has seen is Ils.

I like Insidious for the first 2/3 and then the final act was just stupid.

Absolutely loved Them (it's French, actually).  Refuse to watch the American remake because I thought the original was just perfect.  It became even creepier to me when I found out it was based on a true story.

And I completely agree about Insidious.  They just dropped the ball towards the end.
